Spectacular indoor/outdoor living in the heart of the Kona Coast

  • 5 of 5

We spent four nights in this amazing place. It’s on a busy road on a fairly crowded part of the Kona coast, but once you’re through the coded gate, you’re in your own tropical paradise, watching surfers, turtles, flying fish, endless crashing surf, and gorgeous sunsets.

The house combines the best of indoor and outdoor living: kitchen, dining, and living room spaces are all outdoors and covered, while the two bedrooms are indoors and have air conditioning. We loved having coffee and meals outside as the surf crashed just steps away.

Our group comprised two couples. Although the house was very comfortable and large enough for all four of us, prospective renters should know that the wall separating the two bedrooms has a glass transom along the top, which lets light and sound easily get through. You shouldn’t expect complete privacy — conversations can be easily heard between the two rooms.

It's worth mentioning the presence of video cameras aimed at the outdoor living spaces. They’re part of the home security system, but not mentioned in any of the materials.

Finally, it’s worth noting that the kitchen does not have an oven, contrary to what the listing said when we rented.

All of these are small matters when talking about such a wonderful slice of heaven. The property is like no other we've experienced. You won't be disappointed.

Owner's Response: Aloha Toby, Thank you very much for all of your great comments and we truly appreciate your giving us your honest feedback. Glad you mentioned the oven, and we will be installing an oven very soon and place double pane glass at the top of the wall dividing the rooms to help soundproofing! We are so glad you enjoyed your stay in spite of these items, and we hope you will be back to stay again very soon…. Until then, enjoy your photos and please send us a few. Mahalo, Kim and Ali

Our Idea of Heaven

  • 5 of 5

This is the place to have your private retreat. You get your own coded gate and parking for up to two vehicles, if you want. The property is bounded to the south by bay and the neighbor to the north is almost impossible to discern. Ali, the owner, is a delight and has useful information.

The home is all about the outdoor space, while the interior echoes the spacious and artful feel. The kitchen, dining, and lounge areas are outside under a high raftered roof. Everywhere there are lovely wood furnitures and sculpture. The ambiance is open and relaxed.

The water is close enough to spit in when the tide is in. Yes, the turtles come in sometimes. The sandy beaches are not far away, but they are not right here. This is lava rock. In the master bedroom, you can listen to the waves wash into the rock all night, if you can stay awake.

We were two couples vacationing together. To have the two bedrooms and bathrooms well separated was nice. We cooked a lot of our meals and the kitchen was well equipped. The state-of-the-art fridge filled with plenty of ice was especially appreciated.

This is the ideal home base for island adventures; close to anything you need and plenty of shopping while giving a sense of isolation.

If I had to choose only one word of description, it would be "soothing".

It has taken me almost a year to write this. Ali & Kim: I am sorry. Your hospitality should not have been rewarded with procrastination. We hope to return to Heaven someday.

It doesn't get any better than this!

  • 5 of 5

I am so glad that we choose this house for our stay on the Big Island! The pictures are great but doesn't compare to the experience of seeing it for yourself. The house is truly made for outdoor living and you would not want to be inside with the view of Lyman's Bay in front of you. We woke up every morning, ate breakfast outside and watched the surfers and admired the visiting Honus while we drank our coffee. I wasn't as adventurous as other reviewers about going into the bay but I did enjoy the tidal pool. There were multiple beaches just minutes away for my snorkeling pleasure.

I was a little concerned about the noise from the road but the sound of the waves melts any car noise away. There is a room air conditioner for those nights that might be just a little too humid for sleeping with the windows open. The bed was amazingly comfortable - and I don't say that very often! There is also a very comfortable and large daybed for those evenings you want to relax in front of the TV (which would be pretty rare). We had an absolutely fabulous time visiting the area and having a beautiful and peaceful place to relax really made the vacation a memorable one!

Perfect vacation spot

  • 5 of 5

The pictures on the listing don't exactly do the in-person perspective justice. The finishes of the house are nice, seating, beds, showers, all very nice. Was slightly hesitant about half the house being outdoors but it's 90% covered so it wasn't ever an issue. The views are going to be hard to beat ... Anywhere. When we arrived there was a turtle laying right at the water - where else does that happen?? There are about 3+ turtles that hang around the house/rocks so we saw them ever time we snorkeled. There's a gate to the house so no concern with security (not that the area is concerning anyway.

In short, likely when we return to Kona I'll be basing it off when we can reserve this unit.

What a vacation getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here from 7/19/16 through 7/26/16. Incredible setting with breathtaking views of Lyman's Bay! Snorkeled everyday with turtles right in front of the house and around the corner. Must be ocean familiar getting in and out. Pay attention to the tides. We live in Santa Cruz and are totally at home in the water. The outdoor kitchen was a real treat. What a setting to cook meals everyday with a million dollar view. Sunsets were unreal. Close to town but you felt by yourself when at the Little Piece of Heaven (perfect name). My family and I completely enjoyed the accommodations and will come back. The Property Manager; Kim, Owner; Ali and Handyman; Jose were all excellent and attentive.

Ali, Thank you for creating this Little Piece of Heaven and sharing it with us!

Dazzling, private and serene

  • 5 of 5

We recommend this property in the highest possible terms. Photos cannot evoke the actual splendor of the setting and the house itself. The Ali'i Drive location is extremely private but surprisingly close to restaurants, bars, surf board rental, beaches, and grocery stores. Once you enter the large and impressive automatic gate, you are closed off from the rest of the world and enter an idyllic scene that knocks ones socks off. We are used to 5 star accommodations and this was right up there with the best.

The house and gardens are well designed and meticulously maintained. It is true indoor/outdoor living. You sit on the lanai and feel the soft trade winds as you prepare meals, or just watch the surfers on the break a short paddle distance away. We saw turtles in the lava rock pool directly in front of the house every day. The sound of the surf is all you hear. There are no adjacent neighbors.

The owner Ali and the agent Kim were both very kind and responsive in all our dealings with them. Jose the caretaker was also very obliging upon our arrival and helped settle us in. We keep dreaming of this place and look forward to returning.
