Silo Stone Cottage, Very Unique House

Bedrooms 3
Property type house
Minimum Stay 1 - 2 nights

About the property

The hand crafted, 3-bedroom stone cottage is full of warmth, colour and character. This property was inspired by and constructed from recycled silos on Kangaroo Island. It is often referred to as the "Round House". The property has 2 full bedrooms (one double, one with twin beds) and a spare very small room with bunk beds. There is one central bathroom with a shower, toilet and washing machine. The house has a fully equipped kitchen with open plan to living and dining areas. All rooms are in separate round "pods" which are adjoined by a series of stone courtyards. This stone cottage offers a special experience and very fun accommodation solution for families. Please note that this is a very untraditional house layout and you walk outdoors in-between rooms.

This house does not have air-conditioning or central heating. There are floor fans and plug in electric heaters in each room.

Nestled in the heart of American River amongst the sugar gums and abundant bird life this cottage is a 5 minute drive from Pennington Bay and Red Banks. It offers access to unlimited walking, hiking, fishing, swimming, surfing and wilderness adventures.

We are more than happy to help you plan your Kangaroo Island vacation and can assist with directions and activities depending on the weather conditions.

Linen is available at an additional fee upon request.

**If Silo Stone Cottage is booked, please check our other two properties in American River called River Front Stone Cottage and Sugar Gum Stone Cottage**

In American River, you are in the heart of Kangaroo Island fishing adventures. The River is breaming with whiting and salmon trout. Squid can be caught off the jetty throughout the year. The house is within walking distance to the acclaimed Oyster Shop and other local restaurants. There is a small shop associated with the local Post Office which offers your basic supplies. The foreshore BBQ facilities, children's playground and public tennis court are located just down the road. There are beautiful walking trails and you are only a 5 minute drive from the stunning Pennington Bay or local hidden gem, Red Banks.

This stone cottage was hand crafted by a local Island family. Each stone was collected near American River and together the family built the cottage, including the unique lead light windows and hanging art throughout the rooms. Staying at Silot Stone Cottage is like staying in a special piece of Kangaroo Island life-style.

Cozy cottage, great communication

  • 4 of 5

Comfortable cottage, unique design. Kitchen is basic, but well equipped and everything works. Everything was clean in all rooms, including kitchen utensils, and there were plenty of supplies (dishwashing liquid, toilet paper etc).

Beds and chairs are ok - comfort is a personal thing anyway - but we've no complaints there. We didn't have issues with the rooms being stuffy or too cold either, but we did have relatively kind weather while we were there.

The location is great! Tucked away from the main strip it is quiet and private. Just what we like when we're away. Our only company for the first night were the resident wallaby and cockatoos. As the property next door is not too close, even when it is occupied, privacy is maintained.

Now for the only down-sides I can think of: there is no solid cover between pods, making pack-up in the rain a little trickier that it otherwise would have been, and an outdoor light to fully illuminate the patio area would be an ideal addition. A lock for the bathroom door would also be helpful, for those who fail to knock ;)

Overall this property is great value for money and has one of the best managers I've had the pleasure of dealing with - prompt and clear communication. Thanks Sarah! We really enjoyed our time here, a pleasurable place to stay improves a holiday immensely!

(wished to rate 4.5, actually, but you don't seem to be able to give 0.5s!)

Loved it!

  • 5 of 5

The place is unique and everything you may perceive as an issue (i.e. no aircon) is clearly advertised. The place is a cracker and just really different with the courtyard basically becoming the living room. Admittedly, we have 5 days of great weather.

I would recommend to bring mossie coils and a BBQ if you can. Also, the couch isn't the most comfy one, but for a base to explore KI it's absolutely perfect. And if you find any other place on the island which sleeps that many people for such a great price, then let me know ;)

Funky and unique - we had a great stay!

  • 4 of 5

Well located in American River and only a few minutes walk from the waterfront in a quiet street. Pet friendly and good communications from the property manager Sarah. Funky layout with one building containing the lounge/kitchen/diner, another a bunk bedroom and bathroom and then two further buildings - one with a double bed and one with a twin. All close together but still separated, might be an issue with younger kids. Bush setting so be prepared for many insects and spiders. Bathroom has a washing machine and line out the back. Kitchen reasonably equipped but note no BBQ. Also lacks air con. There are portable fans though. We had two hot humid days which were a bit stuffy in all rooms but especially the lounge area. Conveniently located for the ferry, Kingscote and most attractions. American River itself rather sleepy but good fishing (jetty and charter), cafe and restaurant at the Mercure Hotel. Note that the shop is now closed and no fuel available. Basic supplies can be bought at the post office.

Unique property and pets allowed

  • 4 of 5

The property is a unique stay on some lovely grounds with plenty of bird life around signing for you! There was a couple of wet days which made the short run to the bathroom a little dam (perhaps add some cover rather than shade cloth) the bedrooms were great and comfy beds. The main living are everything we needed no bbq but enough kitchenware to cook anything we needed. The shutter style blinds in the bedrooms were a cute touch. Having a washing machine was great to be able to use during the stay. The only minor downside was there was a few bugs that kept getting in but that's understandable for the construction and surroundings! We had a great stay though and would definitely recommend to others :)

Cleaners needed

  • 3 of 5

The cottage was unique and the beds were comfortable, We were lucky we took a sandwich maker, to cook our meat on! There was no BBQ, Unfortunatly it was not cleaned well as we found dead spiders, bugs and cobwebs in the cupboard that housed dishes and cookware and the frypan had not been cleaned properly, it was still greasy. The fold out table outside had a broken frame and you could not use it properly. There was also rubbish left in the bathroom from the last guests.

Owner's Response: Hi Susan. Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like the cleaners missed the inside of one of the kitchen cupboards. I'll make sure to pop around and sort that out. Also, no idea that the table was broken! We'll get that replaced immediately. I welcome calls or texts from guests at anytime to come around and sort out any issues. We could have replaced that table and cleaned out the cupboard for you immediately. Sorry for any inconvenience. Hope you had a good time on KI. Many cheers for the feedback. Sarah
