The information provided is accurate and comprehensive but could not describe the delightful nature and location of this property. Within minutes of arrival we had managed to lock ourselves out but this was clearly not a problem with the owner's representative bringing a key to let us in very quickly. The directions provided were accurate with no difficulty encountered in finding the property. First impressions are always important and ours were of a very spacious gite equipped to a high standard. Everything was spotless and we were straight in to cooking an elaborate meal for our party. Subsequently we made good use of the barbecue and were spoilt for outside dining facilities - both undercover and open. We loved cycling to the nearby village (3 kilometers - but not Mondays when it is closed) to purchase our breakfast (croissants and pain aux raisin to die for). We had small children and didn't eat out, preferring to stay at the gite and relax. Dining out does involve a car journey and frankly we felt it was more trouble than it was worth. However only 20 minutes by car to the nearest sizeable town of Loches with all the facilities you might need, supermarkets etc. then if you feel inclined a further 20 minutes to the regional centre of Tours.
The heated swimming pool was used every day - a very good size compared to many. There's something special about being able to swim whilst looking over open countryside which you do here. We also used the table tennis in the barn but none of the keep fit apparatus (we were on holiday after all).
We were able to avail ourselves of fruit and vegetables from the large garden and the tomatoes in particular were exquisite.
We had a smallish party of eight and the facilities were more than adequate though if there were eighteen in residence you might need a rota for the bathrooms. We didn't use the one in the outhouse but it looked perfectly satisfactory.
This property was perfect for us. It is in a fairly isolated location so very quiet, and I would thoroughly recommend it to potential visitors. As a spacious retreat I don't think it could be bettered.
Many thanks to the owner for letting us use her charming farmhouse - it provided us with an oasis of calm in an increasingly frenetic world.
We had a family holiday at les Bertins three years ago, and had such a wonderful time that we returned this year. It is such an ideal place for a large family gathering – there were 16 of us, grandparents, parents and children, and the house and surroundings supplied all our needs! The house itself provides comfortable accommodation for a large group, with kitchen facilities adequate for anything from basic to cordon bleu cooking. The barn served many purposes over the fortnight – as a cinema, a table tennis stadium, a film set, a gymnasium and a theatre - and the swimming pool was in almost constant use. We used fresh produce (fruit and veg) from the garden, and the surroundings and location meant that the children could be both adventurous and safe – a perfect combination. Thank you for another wonderful holiday. We’ll be back!
First of all I would like to thank you Linda for being so lovely and welcoming and understanding, your communication was very prompt. Thank you for opening up your house to us.
Les Bertins is a real switch it all off escape, with plenty of space and peace and quiet, unfortunately we were not surrounded by sunflowers but it didnt matter. The pool was clean and warm and plenty of games to play, the ping pong barn was fab. The best thing was all getting together in the evening to sit at the grand table under the vines to bbq and banquet into the night watching the sun go down.
I would heartily recommend Les Bertins to anyone and challenge them not to unwind and relax in the beautiful Loire countryside.
Loches is a must for a visit. Montmouson was a great cave/vinyard, we went to go to chateau de Nitray but they had a private wedding on, it was a cute chateau surrounded by the vines and had tastings, both just under an hour away. Too many chateaux to visit in a week, stopped in Amboise for a night on way back to Caen and again would highly recommend.
We have just returned from a fabulous week at Les Bertins, there were 3 families staying, 6 adults, 7 children, 5 of which were teenagers. After a long journey we all arrived a little tired but this was all forgotten when we pulled on to the drive & saw this picture postcard home. The inside is spacious but also very cosy, there are 2 log burners for any chilly evenings but most nights were spent under the verandah, eating, chatting & enjoying a few glasses of local wine. The house really does have everything you need to cater for a large group, a well stocked kitchen, comfortable beds( many commented they had the best nights sleep for a long time!) hot showers & wonderful views. The description of the house is spot on, it was just as I expected, it is a real home from home.We have enjoyed the pool & played so many games & never once heard the dreaded words ' I'm bored' Linda is terrific, she made the planning of the holiday so easy, providing lots of info & answering any questions straight away. She adds lovely little touches, wine, chutney, French soaps and a basket of amazing home grown produce on arrival, you can also help yourself to the veggie patch which the children loved to do, our teenagers even cooked apple & blackberry crumble & tarte tatin all ingredients picked from the garden!! We did go canoeing in Descartes, and a day at Futuroscope which is worth a visit & a lovely lunch at Auberge de la Source in St Flovier, good food at a great price. I would recommend this home to anyone who wants to experience what life really is about, good friends, great food, happy exhausted children!
Our 20th Summer holiday together – 13 of us now, ranging from 7 to 47 years; first time in France and Les Bertins certainly didn’t disappoint.
From the moment we stepped through the door (homemade chutneys and wine were a lovely surprise, thank you) we knew we were somewhere special. This beautiful house has real warmth and oozes rustic charm.
There really was something for everyone. Grown-ups loved the amazingly well equipped kitchen – a pot/pan/gadget for every occasion – and the fantastic vegetable plot and fruit trees. Who needs the supermarche?
Full use was made of the pool by everyone but was a real hit with the kids, as was the table tennis table. Teenagers loved the ‘lounging’ area just as much as the adults. We could easily have spent the whole holiday at the house. We didn’t.
• The Saturday market in Loches was a real treat.
• The Lake at Bellebouche on a sunny day for bathing, pedaloes and frites.
• The very pretty mediaeval town and castle at Montresor.
• Futuroscope by night! A theme park with a difference and a great find. Cheaper tickets if you arrive after 5pm. Finished the night with a light show. Well worth the drive.
• Brocante at Villeloin-Coulange. Bric a brac/antique/fleamarket heaven. Disappointed not to stay for the hogroast and bonfire.
• St Flovier. A short cycle (bikes provided, thank you) to the local boulangerie for those all important croissants and pain au raisins.
Auberge de la Source came highly recommended. We spent a lovely couple of hours here. Incredibly friendly and welcoming staff, great with children AND delicious food.
Our abiding memory of the holiday though, will be the house itself. The photos on the website really don’t do it justice. Our favourite spot had to be the veranda, plenty of room for all of us. Lots of laughter and memories created. It also proved to be the perfect spot to watch the sun go down and spectacular thunderstorms!
We came away from this gorgeous place refreshed and invigorated, with promises made to read more, cook more and relax more and with a hope of returning again.
Les Bertins – job done! Thank you.
Having viewed Les Bertins on utube we had an idea of what to expect and we were not disappointed. We arrived to see a beautiful rustic farmhouse set in the Loire in the middle of the countryside. The house was amazing, it seemed so much bigger in reality and was very clean and tidy with added touches of wild flowers to make it feel homely. The kitchen was unbelievably well stocked with every gadget, dish and pan you might possibly need. As a party of 8 adults and 8 children we had plenty of room as the house was huge and there was also enough seating for all of us to eat with 3 different dining areas. The veg patch was a real bonus and we could help ourselves to anything eg; potatoes, onions, peppers etc. The pool was ideal and plenty of outside seating is provided. The owner Linda was extremely helpful throughout the whole process from booking holiday to leaving. There is a folder of information but I recommend researching the area before traveling as we were unsure of what day markets were held and what were best places to visit with children as there was so many leaflets. We did find a lovely lake half hour away which we took a dinghy to. We absolutely loved staying at Les Bertins with its amazing sunsets, peace and quiet and thoroughly recommend it to any large group. The old barn had a table tennis table which was a real hit with our group. The bedrooms were all clean and tidy and lovely bathrooms. Our favourite area was at the rear under the Vines overlooking the countryside which offered stunning sunsets. Thank you Linda for being so helpful we had an amazing holiday at Les Bertins.
