Kilmuir is an historic sheep and cattle property. Eighty acres was purchased at the first auction of Mansfield farmland on June 7, 1854, for one pound per acre. Over the following 130 years purchase of adjoining land saw the property grow to over 1,000 acres.
A considerable workforce was employed to work on the farm. Many of the men and some of their families lived at Kilmuir in workers' cottages. Kilmuir Country Retreat was originally the shearers' quarters.

Fantastic group accomodation
We had a great weekend away at kilmuir house. The house and backyard entertaining area is superb. We had 16 people stay and had no troubles at all fitting. Erica was a great host. We will definitely be back again next year.
What an awesome place! We had 4 families with kids who were older teenage/ early twenties and there was something for everyone, with enough space for everyone to have a great weekend. The renovated shearers’ quarters still retain their charm, but were also very comfortable. The separate bedrooms were cosy, each opening onto the front or back veranda. Small heaters in each room were more than enough to take the edge off the crisp Mansfield mornings. The big kitchen was ideal for our group of 16 and the lounge room was perfect to sit by the fire. We had good weather, so eating in the spacious outdoor living area or sitting on the veranda in the afternoon was a treat.
Erica was the perfect host. She showed us around the farm, which was full of history, including the old shearing shed, which is still in use. Some of our group were bush walkers, so Erica provided us with lots of local knowledge regarding walks. She even went into the tourist centre herself one day to pick up more information for us!
A great holiday venue - highly recommended!
Perfect place for family retreat!!
Our extended family stay at Kilmuir was excellent. It accommodated our four families easily with warm comfortable bedding and great kitchen facilities. The outdoor deck, table and bbq area are a highlight. Kids had an awesome time exploring the gardens. Wonderful warm hospitality from Erica who ensures you have everything you need. Very likely to become an annual tradition for our families.
It was a very enjoyable stay at Kilmuir, lots of space for kids to play.
Great outdoor eating space.
Fantastic place to stay, very relaxing and quite area esp the outside dinning area with a beautiful nature looking. No neighbours around the house which gives more confident to don't worry about the noise if you stay late at night. The house was very clean and neat. Great kitchen equipment, everything you need is there plus the BBQ equipment. In short, it is amazing to stay at Kilmuir. Thanks to Erica who was very lovely and accommodating host !
a wonderful place for the extended family
We found everything we wanted at Kilmuir for an extended family gathering where we gathered to celebrate a birthday. All ages were delighted by the place. The 2 grandchildren arrived to be invited to see the new born calf( great for city kids) and family and partners were all happy in that they all had their own separate bedrooms...a basic room, each one opening onto the front or back verandahs of the shearing shed, but comfortable beds, electric blankets and heaters. The kitchen /meals area was a fantastic place to all be preparing a real cook up and feast. Two fridges, large stove, lots of pots and pans etc made for an easy place to work in. The adjoining lounge sitting area , although smaller, worked well and had a fantastic heater which heated the whole area.
Couches on both front and back verandahs allowed us to sit and enjoy superb sunsets and for the early birds the sunrises. The garden surrounding the property was inspiring and full of birds. Cattle in the adjoining paddock, kangaroos in the late afternoons and a close walk to hear the pobblebonk frogs (not sure of that spelling) all provided interest. There was a great BBq area and outside tables and chairs scattered around the garden gave quiet spaces if anyone needed them Our host was helpful, very friendly and informative and made our stay very special. Nothing was too much bother for her.... somehow she managed to also provide us with the most glorious weather for the 4 days that we were there! Thanks Erica!
