Great location. Cosy. A bit tired

  • 3 of 5

Great location, quaint and cosy, but a little tired. Josie was very helpful, and it was our 4th time staying at Dinner Plain, but first at Snow at Last. We stayed for a week with two young children, and it was pretty good, but some things are showing their age. The cabin is small, but was fine for our needs as a family of 2+2. It is very close to the DP slope, and we enjoyed some of the best skiing conditions I've seen in Australia. It is in a quiet part of DP, a short stroll to the shops and pubs.

Open fire was no issues with the kids, and loverly to add to the atmosphere and have in addition to the heating (wood was a bit green, so was smoking a bit, even with vent fully open). Building Blocks and toys for the kids helped keep them entertained. New TV, sound system and great hot water, new showerhead and dryer and clothes washer made routine living very easy.

Kitchen is well equipped: gas cooktop, microwave, big fridge. Although BYO wine glasses and fry pan. As always, wash everything thoroughly before you use the utensils, we found it in a questionable state of cleanliness. Keep all food which ants might find attractive in the fridge; the price of living with nature I guess. Not a problem, just be aware of it - We had a small colony in on the honey and tomato sauce in the cupboards within a few hours of getting there.

The double bed was probably the same age as the cabin, and the worst I have ever slept in (even compared to boarding school and military beds) it was the biggest problem with the place. It resulted in a terrible night's sleep the entire stay; soft edges and cheap/old mattress made it feel like sleeping on a deflating jumping castle. Every time I or my wife moved, I though one of us would fall out: I was seriously contemplating sleeping on the floor. We got used to it by the end of the trip... although afternoon naps on the couch in front of the fire helped.

Overall it wasn't too bad. 6 bulbs needed to be replaced, as did the smoke alarm batteries. The latter was fixed within 36 hours, but the former wasn't and just added to the tired feel of the place. We would love to stay again; once the bed has been replaced.
