The Fisherman's Wife

Bedrooms 3
Property type house
Minimum Stay 1 - 2 nights

About the property

The Fisherman's Wife is an old cottage in Dover in Southern Tasmania with a stunning location. The original features of a classic Fisherman's house has been beautifully blended with modern facilities and furnishings. The old walls of the kitchen show where the cottage has adapted to changing use, yet the retro-fitted cupboards house a 90 cm gas range, electric oven and stainless steel appliances. Prepare meals for friends and family whilst watching the breath-taking change of colors as the sun moves across the bay.

The lounge also bears the marks of it's history but the modern comfortable furnishings, the wood fire and the views insist you sit and watch the weather march across the water. See the agile Terns bomb dive into the shimmering bay, meters from where you rest.

Stay long enough and you'll notice the routine of the black swans foraging head down along the foreshore, be lucky enough to rush outside when you notice dolphins out the front.

The wall paper in the bedrooms is original and intact, bearing witness to the shifts and changes over time. The beds are modern and comfortable with duckdown feather doonas, thousand thread white linen and a simple setting. The ensuite for the main bedroom is modern with shower, toilet and vanity. The second bathroom/laundry speaks more of the 'old world' but has a new toilet and vanity and houses the original deep cast iron bath which is clean and white but a little tired.

The Fisherman's cottage is a unique glimpse into Tasmanian history. The refurbishment is faithful to the simple life led when Dover was a major fishing port. This is not the pre-fabricated repetition of a purpose built holiday accommodation but a continuation of the story of Port Esperance and early Tasmanian life.

Fabulous Place

  • 5 of 5

The Fisherman's Wife is a great place for a family or romantic get-away. The owners are super-wonderful to deal with and the house itself is quaint, clean and well appointed. It still has its original shack feel which I loved, but has all the usual mod-cons that you would want these days. Its conveniently located and yet you feel a million miles away from civilisation. I caught fish off the jetty out the front, including a 1+ kilo bream which was magnificent as Good Friday lunch! (just setup a berley trail and away you go!). This place is perfectly priced for what you get. I say go for it!

We had a delightful stay at the cottage . Our Canadian friends were blown away by the view . We had a great evening sitting by the fire pit and cooked some local fish over it - delicious!

Very comfy but simple house - Would go back for longer if possible another time

Charming cottage on waterftont

We loved this individual character cottage which was beautifully decorated and stylish . We felt the lounges should be facing the water and not the TV as it was mesmorizing. Would definite rly recommend. Great walk along waterfront too

Simply Perfect

This property, while unpretentious, offers everything you will need in one of the most captivating environments to be found.

A beautiful little cottage on the edge of a scenic bay.

You will not be disappointed!
