This Amish-built log cabin is located right on Payne Creek on the western flank of the Cabinet Mountains. It includes a fully-equipped kitchen and bath, living room, and a large sleeping loft accessed by a spiral staircase. Also included are wireless internet and DVD/VHS player and library.
The 30 acre property is adjacent to the National Forest Service, and has over a mile of hiking trails through lush cedar-hemlock forest. Elk, deer, moose, black bears, and bald eagles are among many wild visitors to our property. A beautiful 60 foot waterfall on Payne Creek is just a 30 minute walk east into the National Forest Service.
Scenic Bull Lake is a half mile west, and boating and swimming access is available at Dorr Skeels National Forest Campground three miles northwest. The Bull River, just five miles south, has excellent trout fishing. The area has great hunting for elk, deer, moose, and turkey. There are several nearby trails into the Cabinet Mountain Wilderness area with access to beautiful glacial lakes.
Other nearby attractions include the lush old-growth cedar forest at Ross Creek Cedars Scenic area (eight miles west) and Kootenai Falls (18 miles northeast) which are the largest waterfalls between the Cascades and the Rockies. There are local cross country skiing trails. Nearby downhill ski resorts include Schweitzer Mountain (65 miles west) and Turner Mountain (50 miles north). Lake Pend Oreille is just 40 miles west in Idaho. The nearest major airport is in Spokane, Washington 140 miles west. Glacier National Park is a three hour drive east.
Each year there are three to five great traditional outdoor country music festivals at the Halfway House bar and grill just down the road.
The area is a favorite scenic bicycle tour destination. It is home to the annual Scenic Tour of the Kootenai River (STOKR) in May and the Cycle Hard for Education (CHaFE 150) tour.
There is great rafting on the Kootenai and Yaak rivers as well as seasonal rafting on several other streams. We can provide transportation and logistical support for raft trips.

I fell in love with this area while working as a geologist for the US Geological Survey in 1978. Amazingly when I returned looking for property to purchase in 2001, I found that this beautiful quiet secluded corner of Montana had somehow remained a wonderful well-kept secret.
Randy Farr, Owner purchased this cabin in 2006
I chose this 30 acre property because it contained a beautiful diverse conifer forest and snow-fed stream which bisects it. It affords privacy for both my home on the eastern edge of the property and the visitors to the cabin on the western edge. Being next to National Forest Service land was also a must!
Great views and a waterfall just off the property to the east!
Centrally located for easy day trips to the Pend Oreille area in Idaho and the Kootenai Valley. Lots to see and do!
My husband and I were at Bull Lake for a reunion of classmates, family and friends. This cabin allowed us easy access to our event location. Randy's cabin had everything we needed and more. It was a perfect little retreat for our two night stay. We did have a very happy little cricket somewhere in the kitchen area that was vocal throughout our stay. We would definitely use this cabin again for any visits to the Bull Lake. It was great to meet Randy while we were there and learn a little more about what was offered in the area. I wish our stay could have been longer but life happens!
Great time relaxing at the cabin away from all the noise life brings. Enjoyed the quiet! Loved that there wasn't cell reception! Had fun watching turkey and deer right out the window. Great, friendly hosts, as well. We plan to return.
We loved the peacefulness of the area. The lake wasn't walking distance, but with a car there are more lakes and rivers to chose from to do some fishing or swimming.
I don't think the cabin is big enough for five adults, but sufficient for two adults with two kids.Would be nice to have some more mugs and bowls,as we had only one cereal bowl for four of us.Also would be nice to have more pots and pans for cooking,we did not bring any with us.
The bed was comfortable and the creek beside the house was absolutely lovely to listen to.
Nice place, nice area and nice people.Defiantly will be visiting Montana again!
The Payne Cabin is located in a peaceful meadow, just minutes from all Bull Lake has to offer. Our family thoroughly enjoyed the quiet and the clean cabin. The charming cabin is well-built and efficient. From the rocker on the porch to the campfire, it met all of our vacation needs.
THANK YOU Randy for sharing your wonderful cabin at Bull Lake with us!!!! It was perfect in every way. We especially loved going to sleep listening to the creek flowing right by the cabin and were pleasantly surprised that the cabin was well supplied with everything we might need. We will be back and can't thank you enough for our memorable stay at the cabin!!! Lynda Buermann - Seattle, WA
This cabin is impeccably kept, very clean and comfortable, and Randy has stocked it with all the things you need to make meals and have a pleasant stay. He has provided a guide to the area, with recommendations that were excellent - we tried several of his suggestions and loved each of them. We didn't have any needs during our stay, but it was clear by Randy's responsiveness that had we needed anything, he was ready to help.
The property itself is exactly what I was hoping for when I was looking for a slightly out-of-the-way place. The closest grocery store is about 15 miles away - a gorgeous drive. I could hear the nearby stream at night, which was lovely.
I highly recommend booking this property.
Boat, fish and ski on Bull Lake 0.5 mile west. Access from Dorr Skeels NFS campground 2.5 miles northwest.
Enjoy great huckleberry picking in August and other berry picking from early July to September. We might even share some of our secret locations.
