Overview

About the property

The hand crafted, 3-bedroom stone cottage is full of colour and character. Its very clever layout consists of separate living and sleeping quarters, 2-bathrooms and a fully equipped kitchen. This stone cottage offers the perfect accommodation solution for families and groups of friends. The front building is the Kitchen and Living Room. The bedrooms and bathrooms are in the back building and each room opens up onto a covered outdoor breeze way, providing privacy for each of the 3 bedrooms. This is a very untraditional house layout.

This house does not have air-conditioning or central heating. There are floor fans and plug in electric heaters in each room.

Located on the edge of American River and 5 minutes drive to Pennington Bay and Red Banks, this house offers access to unlimited walking, hiking, fishing, swimming, surfing and wilderness adventures.

We are more than happy to help you plan your Kangaroo Island vacation and can assist with directions and activities depending on the weather conditions.

Linen and towels are not included with rental. However, we are happy to arrange bed linen at an additional cost.

**If River Front Stone Cottage is booked, please note that we have two other stone cottages in American River. They are called Sugar Gum Stone Cottage and Silo Stone Cottage.**

Great location for Kangaroo Island adventures!

In American River, you are in the heart of Kangaroo Island fishing adventures. The River is breaming with whiting and salmon trout. Squid can be caught off the jetty throughout the year. The house is within walking distance to the acclaimed Oyster Shop and other local restaurants. There is a small shop associated with the local Post Office which offers your basic supplies. The foreshore BBQ facilities, children's playground and public tennis court are located just down the road. There are beautiful walking trails and you are only a 5 minute drive from the stunning Pennington Bay or local hidden gem, Red Banks.

A true Island style holiday house.

This stone cottage was hand crafted by a local Island family. Each stone was collected near American River and together the family built the cottage, including the unique lead light windows and hanging art throughout the rooms. Staying at River Front Stone Cottage is like staying in a special piece of Kangaroo Island life-style.

Good position close to coast and eateries. Would have appreciated a washing machine and BBQ.

Feel the serenity!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here 11 nights with our 2 chn aged 9 and 12 and my 77 yo parents. We gave my parents the lovely master bedroom with ensuite and the rooms and bathroom (huge!) are v spacious and clean. We loved the funky touches like the rock walls, stained glass and original artworks. The kitchen has everything you need with a large fridge and stove/oven. Every morning, mum, the kids and I went on a different walking trail and the signs explaining the history and natural features of American River were fascinating and poignant. My husband would go for an early surf at Pennington Beach 10 min away and dad just slept in. There is a strong community spirit and we met many of the friendly locals at the annual American River Gala Day held at The Shed- a must do for a meal or two. The kids had fun catching heaps of whiting off the jetty (unfortunately too small) and if you hate feral cats, drop in to visit Barry just around the corner, The Feral Cat Man- a real Aussie character! There isn't a laundromat nearby but we had no trouble handwashing in the large tub and there's a Hills hoist line. The backyard is bare though and it'd be nice to have a tree or shade cloth to sit under on the outdoor setting as the inside table was a bit small for the 6 of us. You can't swim in the bay at the front but there is a spotless BBQ shed, tables and playground. Our children were old enough to lock themselves in their room each night, but one thing to consider with the outdoor breezeway configuration is that young chn would have to sleep with a parent each as rooms aren't joined- the keys take a while! We didn't have to use the fans or heaters at all but it was quite cool some days and evenings.

Nice place to stay!

  • 4 of 5

We stayed for three nights (2 adults, 3 kids and a dog) and enjoyed the place. All plusses (spacious, garden, tranquillity, dog-friendly, helpful owners) ; only downside was the cleanliness of the dishes & glasses.
