About the property

The Old Schoolmaster’s Cottage on the Barrington River is nestled cosily in the picturesque Barrington River Valley. Built in the late 1800's our Cottage is one of the oldest original residences in the Barrington Valley. The history of the Cottage has been enhanced by recent renovations which highlight its old-world charm.

The Cottage enjoys a breathtaking position right on the banks of the Barrington River with an outlook over productive working river flats which change colour with the seasons. Sit on the verandah, listen to sounds of the river and overlook the magnificent Bucketts Mountain Range, all of which add to the unique atmosphere of the Cottage.

Swim or go tubing down the Barrington River which is less than 100 metres away, or sit comfortably near the slow combustion fire in the winter months. All year round, the Cottage provides a unique escape into the heart of the countryside.

Canoeing, hiking, mountain biking, horse-riding, fishing, tennis and golf are all nearby. Fifteen minutes in a car takes you to the historic Gloucester town center, with cafès, pubs, museums and parks as well as extremely friendly locals.

On site - bush walking, catch and release fishing in the dam (Australian bass and Silver Perch fingerlings have been stocked) and river, swimming in the Barrington River

Off site - within a 10 minute drive - kayaking, canoeing, mountain biking, white water rafting, abseiling. Within a 30 minute drive - horse riding trails thought the Barrington Tops.

Our Cottage is in Barrington New South Wales which is a comfortable 3 hours drive north of Sydney and under 1.5 hours drive from Newcastle.

The Old Schoolmaster's Cottage is the ideal location for those seeking tranquility and relaxation. The Cottage is also ideally located for those who wish to explore the World Heritage listed Barrington Tops and Gloucester Tops to marvel at the extreme natural beauty of the area.

Bedding configuration – the Cottage has 3 bedrooms with 2 single beds in one room, the other two bedrooms each have a queen bed.

Linen and guest toiletries are provided

Slow Combustion fire in loungeroom – firewood supplied during the winter months.

Gas BBQ with hood (located on covered return verandah)

Kitchen - fully equipped with a Miele oven and dishwasher, large fridge, microwave and cooktop. The kitchen also has some basic provisions.

Excellent propert!

  • 5 of 5

Well appointed property. Good kitchen facilities. New bathroom with lots of room. Beds were comfortable. Ate outside for all meals which was great. Despite the wet we were able to do some exploring and managed a nearby walk. This was a very relaxing weekend but could also have been a very outdoor weekend. Would love to come back for a week!

Perfectly peaceful

  • 5 of 5

This cottage was the perfect meeting place for my friend and I to catch up. Very peaceful and relaxing, yet only a short drive to cafes etc. The decor is really lovely, cozy and comfortable. A dip in the river was also a pleasure with easy access from the cottage. The hosts here have thought of everything, so all that's left for you to do is enjoy! We only stayed for a weekend, but wish we could have stayed longer. Highly recommended.

Beautiful and Tranquil

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely enjoyed our weekend at the Old Schoolmaster's Cottage - Jenny was very thoughtful in sending us Things To Do whilst we were there and touching base with us on how we were enjoying our stay.

The cottage is clean, and like a home away from home, with everything you need for a perfect family getaway. The surrounding fields offer a perfect playground for the children and the short walk to the river provides a little adventure and picturesque walk for everyone. We will definitely be coming back!

Tranquil and beautiful

  • 5 of 5

We recently spent a weekend for a mum's weekend away at the Old School Masters Cottage. The cottage is so cute and suited our group perfectly. It was clean, tidy and well appointed. Plenty of firewood made the cottage cosy on a cold winter's night. Sitting on verandah in winter sun listening to the river and enjoying the rural landscape an absolute treat for the soul. Perfect. No mobile phone range was awesome. Free Wifi provided all the communication we needed. We'll be back.

Beautiful country escape

  • 5 of 5

We spent four nights and did not want to leave. The house is well appointed, cosy and great for lounging in front of the fire. Very peaceful with lovely scenery, amazing mountains and the sounds of the river. We enjoyed the winter sun on the verandah watching Mum and calf and abundant bird life. It was a perfect place to really relax and get back to nature
