About the property

Historic Property in the Laurel Highlands -- 4 Fireplaces, Sleeps 12

The Kooser-Ankney Homestead (circa 1832) is a colonial farmhouse listed on the Somerset County (PA) Historic Register that has been lovingly restored. In the past, this property served as a popular stagecoach stop, so we are excited to once again open the home to guests.

Located on 16 acres in Somerset, PA, the property is situated only 6 miles from the PA Turnpike with convenient access to Seven Springs, Hidden Valley, Laurel Hill State Park, Kooser State Park and the Laurel Highlands region. It is the perfect place to have a family gathering, enjoy a long weekend or celebrate a special occasion. Our property is also a quick drive to The Hayloft and Horizon View Farms.

The home has three formal bedrooms, two sleeper sofas in the living room and one sleeper sofa in the library. There are three full bathrooms to include a corner Jacuzzi tub in the master bathroom. A front load washer and dryer are available, and towels and linens are included with the rental. The home is equipped with Internet service and satellite TV.

The kitchen includes granite countertops, stainless steel appliances and two large sinks for meal preparation. An outdoor propane grill is located on the front porch with convenient access to the kitchen. The dining room has a table handcrafted from old beams found in the historic barn.

The home features four original wood burning fireplaces. During warmer months, there is an outdoor fire pit for evenings filled with stargazing. Firewood is provided for guests.

There are many special sights within driving distance to include Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob, Flight 93 Memorial, and Ohiopyle State Park (with whitewater rafting) as well as Bedford Springs Resort and Spa and Nemacolin Woodlands Resort and Casino.

About Chris Strasser

We loved living in this home with family and friends for more than a decade. I served in the U.S. Navy and continue to work in the Washington DC area. My wife was previously a professor at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, PA, but in 2014 joined the faculty at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, VA. Thus, we are no longer able to live full-time here and look forward to sharing our home with others. We have wonderful property managers and neighbors who provide support to us and our renters.

Chris Strasser purchased this house in 2004

Why Chris Strasser chose Somerset

My wife was born in Western PA, so when a job opportunity presented itself in the region we moved to be closer to family. This was the only property that we scheduled an appointment to view and, even though it needed extensive renovations, we simply loved the historic character of the home. Over a decade, the infrastructure was gutted, the wood floors and fireplaces were restored and a new kitchen and bathrooms were built. We are now working to restore the historic bank barn. Our greatest joy is when people visit the property for the first time and tell us that they immediately feel at home. It is indeed a very special place to build memories that will last a lifetime.

Family fun in the country!

  • 5 of 5

I will echo what the others have said, Chris and Dawn were great to communicate with and made the check-in and check-out process very easy.

We originally had planned a ski trip in the area but when the weather did cooperate (70 degrees in February?!??) we needed a plan B. Luckily, the house itself provided lots of entertainment for our family. The kids loved flying kites in the field, playing on the tire swing and roasting marshmallows at night! There were lots of board games inside, several tv's, wifi (😀򐀩 ...they even loved bathtime in the large jacuzzi tub!

The adults truly got some time to relax since the kids were entertained and there were more than plenty of rooms for everyone to enjoy some quiet time.

The house is truly a home. Very well stocked...nothing missing!

I also need to mention that we had a minor maintenance issue during our stay. We communicated with Chris and he sent the caretaker, Roger, right over. Roger was very nice and we learned a lot about the house's history from him.

Overall, I think this is a great rental for large groups or families.

Thanks again Chris and Dawn for sharing your 🏡􈐡!

Everything we imagined, plus some :)

  • 5 of 5

Chris and Dawn were very responsive and helpful throughout booking and leading up to our check-in. This home was absolutely amazing! Very beautiful and quaint, located in a calm area. Seeing the expansive view of the country every morning was a treat. Everything was clean, and it wasn't hard to find what we needed. Every amenity we needed was provided to us. We had a large group and everyone fit comfortably. Check-in and check-out were easy as can be. I would highly recommend this property to anyone looking to book! We had an amazing time and would absolutely visit again.

Happy New Year! What a beautiful home! We had such an amazing weekend snowboarding and ringing in the new year. Chris and Dawn are awesome. They showed hospitality and genuine love for the home. This quaint, sophisticated home was a great location to spend NYE with our family. I hope to be back- sitting in front of the fire, wine in hand, relaxing and enjoying- very soon! Much and thanks & many blessings in the New Year!

Stunning Home in Prime Laurel Highlands Location

  • 5 of 5

This is a magnificently restored farmhouse from the early 1800's. Chris and Dawn were thoughtful and attentive hosts, making sure we had everything we needed for a wonderful weekend. The house was well stocked from kitchen to bathroom needs. The property itself is breathtaking. We enjoyed morning views from the two front porches and evenings around the outdoor fire pit. The girls even picked apples from the tree and made homemade applesauce! Inside there is a double fireplace in the living room, a feature I've never seen before! The location is close-by to many area attractions. We had a short drive to Seven Springs and also Fallingwater. This is honestly a one of a kind property that would make a great getaway for family or friend gatherings, as it has many comfortable beds and sleeper sofas. Thank you Dawn and Chris for opening your home and hospitality! We will definitely be returning to the Kooser-Ankney Farm!

Owner's Response: We were honored that you selected our place to celebrate your father’s birthday. We are so glad that you had such a wonderful experience with your family. We love that your girls picked apples and made applesauce. If you should return during the first two weeks of July, the berry bushes should be full. We look forward to your next visit in February!
