About the property

You begin to feel it from the moment you turn down the driveway and meander through the canopy of trees, shot through with shafts of sunlight. Subconsciously at first, you inhale a little deeper and then exhale just a little slower than usual. The bustle of life fades quickly as natures envelopes you. The Keep appears across a quiet pasture, nestled at the edge of the woods. The driveway makes its final bend, and Sylvan Keep unfolds. The corners of your mouth tip upward. Your shoulders rise an inch. Do they seem lighter already? Can’t be….

But then you get out of the car and step into the magic of Sylvan Keep. You’re on vacation, and yet somehow you’ve come home. You were meant to be here. Before you know it, you are under her spell.

Why do we call it Sylvan Keep? It’s the place to keep dreams and memories; the place to keep family and love; the place to get your balance. Medieval Europe was dotted with castles. They were the center of village life, the fortress of defense, and the home of the landowner. The castle keep was at the center; the innermost and strongest structure. It served as both a home and the last line of defense in case of attack. Sylvan is the Latin word for woods. This beautiful forest retreat is the perfect spot to escape the world and recharge your spirit.

Sylvan Keep is the place to clear the mind, restore the soul, and inspire the heart. Find your strength and your center again. Regroup and recharge. Sylvan Keep beckons.

About Sylvan Keep…..

Sylvan Keep is an authentic log home on nearly 18 acres in beautiful Bath County, Virginia. A wet-weather stream runs beside the house, with many small pools and waterfalls in season. A small foot bridge crosses the stream, and a walking trail leads to the national forest and a world of exploration.

The house has excellent outdoor living spaces that bring nature up close. A covered stone front porch adjoins a full-length side deck on the shady side of the house that overlooks the stream. Next, a screened porch with dining option opens to a smaller rear grilling deck. A small waterfall trickles into the rock-lined goldfish pond in front of the house.

Inside offers surprising space and luxury. The front door opens to a vaulted great room with beautiful cherry floors, tongue-in-groove wood ceiling, exposed beams, and a wall of windows that displays the sylvan beauty outside. The centerpiece of the great room is a two-story, semi-round, stone fireplace equipped with remote-controlled gas logs.

The kitchen at Sylvan Keep is ready for real cooking. It is fully stocked with quality pots and pans, bakeware, cookie sheets, serving dishes, plates, utensils, wine glasses, etc. The pantry has a fairly extensive spice selection and basic staples like flour and sugar. Other amenities include granite countertops, an island with breakfast bar, gas range/oven, coffee maker and filters, side-by-side refrigerator with ice maker and ice crusher, mixer, picnic supplies, microwave, toaster, griddle, measuring cups and spoons, mixing bowls, and food storage containers.

The main floor master suite at Sylvan Keep is warm and inviting. It features cherry floors, a walk-in closet, an oak bedroom suite with queen bed and plush memory foam mattress, and a spacious private bath with jetted tub and separate shower.

The first floor also has a cozy den with TV, DVD player, and sofa that makes into a double bed. Sheets and mattress topper for extra comfort are stored in the master bedroom walk-in closet. There is a half bath adjacent to the den for convenient use as an overflow bedroom.

The second floor has two additional bedrooms, a full bath, and a large loft with 70” HD TV and DVD player. The Keep also has a record player, CD play, and radio. Bring your own, or check out something from our collection of DVDs, CDs, and records. (Radio picks up a few stations, but not many. This is a very secluded location.)

The second floor front bedroom overlooks the fish pond. It features a vaulted, tongue-in-groove wood ceiling with exposed beams and a king-sized bed with medium-firm memory foam mattress. A vintage Victorian door forms the headboard, and a deacon’s bench provides sitting area. A wicker sleigh and a bentwood rocker round out the eclectic appeal of this room. Open the windows in the summer, and fall asleep to the trickle of the waterfall and the occasional croak of the frogs.

The third bedroom is perfect for the kids. It has a custom bunk bed set with wrought-iron hardware and wood rung ladder. The only problem is deciding whether the top bunk or the bottom bunk is cooler.

We want your stay at Sylvan Keep to be as relaxing as possible. That starts with eliminating things to pack. The Keep is thoroughly stocked with bath towels, hand towels, wash cloths, bar soap, body soap, shampoo, conditioner, hair dryers, toilet paper, paper towels, first aid kit, dishwasher detergent, etc. Beds always have freshly laundered sheets, and there are varieties of pillows, blankets, and quilts to satisfy various preferences stored in the closets.

Sylvan Keep is a rare blend of rural tranquility with pampered luxury. It offers all the privacy and solitude of a mountain retreat without giving up any of the comforts of home. We invite you to come and experience her charm.

Normal check in is at 4pm and check out is at 11am we will advise if late check out or early check in is available based on other reservations. We also prefer bookings be made a minimum of 72 hours prior to check in please.

About Scott Fox

We purchased this property in 2015. It was a foreclosure in need of a lot of love and attention, but it cast its spell on us all the very first time we saw it. Even through the layers and dirt and grime, rotten railings, and bad paint, its charm was undeniable. We have spent a full year cleaning, repairing, upgrading, furnishing, and painting. It's been a huge amount of work, but such a rewarding process watching this diamond-in-the-rough shine again. It's so peaceful and beautiful here that even a day of hard physical labor seems more like a vacation.

Why Scott Fox chose Millboro

We wanted a family getaway in the mountains of western Virginia, and it doesn't take much wandering around Bath County to make you fall in love. We have horse owners and trail riders in the family, so we also wanted a place where we could keep horses and that adjoins the national forest. Finally, we wanted a log home with enough acreage to be completely private. We wanted our getaway to be exactly that.... away from everything..... so it was important not to be able to see another house from the property and not to have traffic passing the property. Finding a property that has all these features is hard enough, but finding one that we could afford proved impossible for a long time. So when we stumbled onto this property, we jumped. Sylvan Keep is everything we dreamed and more. We invite you to come and share her magic and beauty.

A lovely cabin with the amenities of home

  • 5 of 5

Our family spent New Year's weekend at Sylvan Keep and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The owners responded to all of our inquiries quickly and thoroughly before we arrived. Once there, we found a clean and fully-equipped cabin with all the amenities of home--from a plethora of blankets and throws to spices and pots/pans to new toothbrushes and floss for those of us who forgot. They are not kidding when they say that all you need to bring are your clothes and some food! The fireplace, in particular, is lovely to sit by. Our only regret is that, in coming in the winter, we did not get to enjoy the grill and firepit (though we thought about it!).

The kids occasionally wished for access to cellular phone/internet access or TV news channels (to watch the ball drop), but a weekend of digital detox is certainly no bad thing.

Owner's Response: Thank you for ringing in the New Year at Sylvan Keep! We are happy to hear that you found everything you needed so that a couple of forgotten toiletries did not spoil the trip or force an excursion to the "real world" during your weekend of being "unplugged". Sorry that the deep freeze the whole country is experiencing right now dissuaded you from enjoying the outdoor fire pit and grill, but that just means you must come back in summer to enjoy the completely different but equally wonderful outdoor experiences at Sylvan Keep! You were excellent guests, and welcome you back any time.

Absolutely perfect!!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 7 wanted a different Christmas experience this year after the loss of a family member. Sylvan Keep was exactly what we needed! The home is beautiful - it was welcoming, clean, stocked with everything we needed, and made us feel at home. We cooked meals together, played board games, read books, hiked in the woods, took naps, watched movies, played cards and enjoyed each other tremendously! No wi-fi? No problem!! Even the 14 year old daughter expressed how relaxed and stress-free it was to be "off the grid"! As the older children have begun their adult lives, the two teenagers don't get much time with the big brother and sisters. These four days allowed for time to re-connect as a family with no distractions. Our time at Sylvan Keep made memories that we will treasure for a lifetime!!!

Amazing home with plenty of amenities !

  • 5 of 5

Scott and Heather were perfect hosts in their beautiful home in the Virginia mountains! We appreciated all their directions to the house and detailed maps of the area! We had everything we needed even bowls ready for our golden retriever too. We really enjoyed how comfortable the house was and even had a gorgeous stone fireplace. It was very clean with mints on our pillows! Wow! What a thoughtful gesture. It was the many little kindnesses that made this Thanksgiving so special in the amazing home! We will definitely come back again.

Sylvan Keep more than exceeded my expectations.

  • 5 of 5

This property is beautiful in so many ways, and the house has more than anyone would need. The kitchen is way more stocked than I had suspected, and all of the beds and furniture are incredibly comfortable. (There are even chocolates waiting on every pillow!) The views of the forest coupled with the atmosphere of the cabin definitely create the perfect relaxing getaway. I will definitely be back in the near future!

Perfect Weekend Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We had a WONDERFUL weekend getaway at Sylvan Keep! The house was in immaculate condition and more fully stocked than we anticipated. Scott and Heather have well thought out and prepared for their guests stay, making it an extremely relaxing refreshing retreat. We loved hiking through the woods, enjoyed the fireplaces-both inside and out, and made memories to last a lifetime. Thank you for the opportunity to enjoy some family time and escape for a bit. We loved having an excuse to "unplug" for the weekend. Our only disappointment was that we could only stay for the weekend and not the whole week. Thanks again for a wonderful trip! We hope to be back again soon!

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts, Sarah. We are always striving to exceed expectations and to make a stay at Sylvan Keep as relaxing and stress-free as possible, so it's especially great to hear when we succeed at that! We really enjoyed having you, and can't wait to have you come back to stay for a whole week. Winter is actually a fabulous time of year to stay. Get the blood pumping with some outdoor exploration of the winter wonderland, and then snuggle in for an evening by the stone fireplace, a mug of hot chocolate (which we have stocked of course!), and some great, unplugged family time. So thanks for being great guests, and come back soon!
