Melros Beach Holiday Cottage

Bedrooms 3
Property type house
Minimum Stay nights

About the property

The modern three bedroom, one bathroom cottage is a little over 1 hour's drive south from Perth, en route to the wineries, restaurants, caves, arts and craft, surf spots and forests of south-west Western Australia.

Located on the sea side of the narrow strip of land between the Indian Ocean and the Peel Estuary, the cottage is screened from the street by a bush garden which attracts wildlife, such as the shy Western Ringneck '28' parrot, bush pigeons, bob-tail goannas and brush tail possums.

The cottage accommodates a maximum of 4 adults, or 6 persons including children. It has two queen beds and two double bunk beds suitable for children. Kitchen, dining and living areas are open plan. The kitchen has a cook top, oven, refrigerator and dish washer. There is a bathroom with shower and a small laundry area with a washing machine. Linen and towels are provided. A reverse cycle airconditioner cools and heats the living area. Ceiling fans are in the two main bedrooms.

Outdoor eating is available on the front verandah which overlooks the bush garden. A gas barbecue is provided.

The property is fenced to keep out the kangaroos. Parking for 2 cars, or a car and dinghy, is within the property. Parking is also available on the verge. The driveway is shared with a property at the rear.

Melros' popular surfing and protected beaches are about 10 minutes' walk from the house (500m by road from the nearest street corner to the sand dunes). The beach is known for body boarding, kayaking, kite surfing in the strong afternoon breezes, beach fishing, and surfing when the swell is right. The white sandy beach offers long walks north and south. An asphalt path, which has been constructed through the sand dunes southward to Tim's Thicket fishing and 4WD beach, has lookouts for views of the coast. In the evening, kangaroos from nearby bushland graze on the lawns of houses, congregate at Melros 'Roo' Reserve near the beach, and bound through the streets and sand dunes. Take care when driving!

The bush provides opportunities for walks and viewing the local wild flowers in spring. The area is also suitable for cycling. The Peel Estuary and the Dawesville channel which offer fishing, crabbing and water sports are approximately 10 minutes' drive away. Boat ramps which do not require a 4WD are found on the estuary side. The Dawesville channel enables convenient access to the ocean from the estuary.

The challenging 'The Cut' international standard golf course is about 10 minutes drive away. Halls Head and Meadowsprings golf courses are further north.

There are a number of cafes and restaurants in the area. Fifteen minutes away at the Miami Shopping centre is the award winning Miami Bakehouse. There is also the refurbished popular Cobblers restaurant. Friar Tucks on Rees Place is family friendly while a more upmarket eating place, with a great outside eating area where boats can pull up, is Cafe Coast at the Bouvard marina. A cafe serving lunch and breakfast has also opened at the new Dawesville IGA shopping centre. The regional centre of Mandurah offers a range of eating places, shopping and entertainment.

Day trips to attractions in the Geographe Bay and Margaret River region can be made from the house.

A vehicle is recommended for exploring. However, there is a bus service during the day which goes from near the house to Mandurah city and the train station. There is a frequent train service to and from Perth.

The house has a securely fenced yard and there are lots of interesting walks in the area for dogs and their humans. The beach, which is a short walk away, has areas where dogs can run free. All other pets are welcome, except for cats because of the wildlife - sorry cat owners.

The rate is $115/night throughout the year with a minimum 2 nights' stay. The cottage provides families, couples and individuals with a value for money, relaxing holiday base in a quiet location close to beaches and the Peel estuary, and within reach of the south-west.
