Set on 75 private acres with spectacular views of Wilson’s Promontory across the ocean, Shellback is a unique country property with a ‘hidden away’ feel.
“Like you, we especially loved the slowly changing seascape and the fantastic moods of the place…….Apricot sunrises, squalls sweeping in over the hill from the west, cloudbursts and glorious sunsets.” Ian Smyth 2017
The surprisingly luxurious house is nestled away from the main road beyond a paddock, two dams and down a tree lined road-way. The house has its own fenced enclosure. Sheep or cattle are grazed by the neighboring farmer, and are often seen quietly grazing in the paddocks surrounding the house.
The lower one third of the property the owners have dedicated to wildlife conservation. Several creeks meander through the bushland and walking tracks have been cut, so there is plenty of exploring to do without leaving the property. A map of the trails will be provided to guide your exploration.
It’s not unusual to see an array of wildlife in the bushland and rolling pastures around Shellback- Kangaroos and Wallabys often roam close by and Koalas, Possums, Wombats and Echidnas can be spotted too. The local Wedge-tailed Eagles are common visitors and are often seen hunting in pairs. There is always a myriad of birds including Galah’s, Cockatoo’s, Blue Wrens, Swallows and our favourite - Black Cockatoos.
The closest beaches are Bear Gully and Walkerville South - a quick six minutes drive away. Walkerville is the location for the enchanting children’s book “Magic Beach” by renowned Australian children’s author Allison Lester. The beach is beautiful, offering sandy stretches, climbing rocks and rock pools. When you are there it’s easy to imagine how Allison dreamt up the magicial events in the book. Even in peak season it is rarely crowded. If seclusion is your thing, you can walk toward Bear Gully and usually find a beach all to yourself. There is awesome snorkeling around Arch Rock.
The road to Cape Liptrap passes through some of the most beautiful, lush and undulating farm and bushland. About one third of the peninsula is National/Coastal Park, with farmland nestled within. Shellback is one of only a handful of country properties located on this peninsula. Rainfall in South Gippsland is higher than the rest of Victoria, so the landscape stays lush long after west and central Victoria has browned off.
The green rolling hills of the peninsula stretch right out to the Cape, where steep cliffs drop off to the Bass Strait below. It is the second most southerly point of mainland Australia. Cape Liptrap juts out and picks up swell created miles out in the Southern Ocean, which crashes heavily on the cliffs below the lighthouse. It is a powerful place: Harshly beautiful.
Recently renovated in 2015/16, the house has a fully renovated kitchen, new bathrooms, double glazed windows and a large deck. We’re sure you will find every comfort you want and need at Shellback.
Things To Do
Pack your wet weather gear and explore the grounds even if it is raining. Play bocce on the lawn, table tennis in the shed, play family board games on the floor, sit by the fire with a glass of red, sketch the rolling hills, read a book, spot wildlife through the binoculars or cook up a feast to eat on the expansive deck. Admire the changing scenery, stargaze after dark and enjoy the tranquillity, you wont see or even hear a car while on the property. Let the kids run wild in packs, making up imaginary games and exploring unsupervised. It is rare to find a place where there is no traffic to worry about. As adults we vividly remember those wonderful days of childhood freedom that kids rarely experience these days. Read the guest reviews for other activity suggestions.

A serene oasis; we can't wait to get back there!
Quite simply, this property is a jewel.
The drive out there was the first indication that we'd found something unique...in the 20mins before you arrive, you'll see not a single house, car or person...just wide open land, stretching towards the ocean. And then you're there, and it's breathtaking. You can hardly believe this beautiful patch of land is yours. It's a rare kind of seclusion; the kind that rejuvenates the soul. The house is beautifully styled with a well stocked kitchen boasting top of the range appliances -- it's not roughing it by any stretch; this is a beautifully maintained house. With two separate wings coming off the open plan living area, there's the chance to both socialize and have your own space. We spent each morning on the deck looking out at the view over to Wilson's Promontory, hardly believing we'd found this little patch of paradise. Fleur and her team at Dufflebird have set up the house with information on various walking tracks and other local sites -- a touch that felt personal and proved to be a reliable guide in exploring the terrain. The canara kept us cosy, and was stocked with ample firewood. We measured the hours by the comings and goings of the resident sheep -- a luxury for folks like us who are wired to the pace of the city. Fleur herself is a genuine and reliable manager. The booking and preparation for our trip was a breeze -- we could not have been in better hands.
This is a special place. A property that has to be experienced to understand how it feeds you. We would recommend it to anyone, but really we want it for ourselves! And just as a side note -- the carpet...so soft! It's in the little details that Shellback excels...the things you don't think about until they catch you by surprise and fill you with joy.
Bliss. All we can say is thank you.
Many thanks Caleb for your exuberant words. Nothing gives us more pleasure than to have guests stay who love Shellback as much we do. We genuinely feel absolutely delighted. We thank you for being such a pleasure to host and for treating the house and property with such respect. We appreciate the effort you made to leave the place in absolutely fabulous shape. You are welcome back anytime.
The most relaxed I’ve been in years. A gorgeous property with incredible views.
Just what the Dr ordered!!
Shellback is one of those properties that you see on the map and think the location must be but a dream. Even the beautiful photos you see in the listing of the views can't prepare you for what you see in reality. The untainted and private views of Wilson's prom are staggering. They literally take your breath away. It seems as though the Prom is part of your own private back yard over acres and acres of treelined paddocks with gently roaming livestock and glass-like dams. Magnificent. And if that doesn't blow you away, the sky full of stars certainly will! Inside, the house is immaculate and you can see the owners have spared no expense, from the gourmet kitchen (I love to cook so this was a huge tick) to the stylish, quality furnishings, the bedding and drapery, everything was of the highest quality. And from every room of the gorgeous indoors, there was always the full view of Wilson's Prom, which seemed to belong exclusively to you. In a word or two Shellback is jaw-droppingly magical. Thank you for another amazing stay at another spectacular Dufflebird property!
Beautiful property far from the madding crowd with spectacular views and wildlife. Home extremely comfortable
Fab Place all you need for an escape
All the stars I have given this property says it all really. Positioned beautifully on the coast with the feel of a farm stay. Nature at its best with the well appointed comforts of city living. Best bit was hanging on the deck and watching the hues of Wilsons Prom change the colour of the ocean..Wish I could keep it secret..
Best view ever!
This place is so wonderful. A cosy winter retreat with a really well thought out space. Will be back in summer to enjoy the beaches nearby. The view is amazing. Where it sits your vision is guided past rolling hills and forest to an overwhelming view on the prom. As the sun sets the proms changes colour - from green to orange to purple. At the end of the paddock is an amazing little forest you can walk through. Even in bad weather the place is great; watching squalls roll across the bay. The place is stocked with everything you need. Love it.
