Kangaroo Island at its pristine best: private swimming beach just below the retreat, spectacular views and walks, rare bird-watching, your own wallabies coming to visit at night, modern, eco-friendly, accommodation.
The owners, John and Hester, have walked and climbed all over the world and consider this among the beautiful places they know, which is why they bought it. "Postcards: A Few of Our Favourites" had this to say:
"Many of us would like to find a holiday retreat on the edge of the world, far removed from the daily whirl...This idyllic spot can only be reached by private road through adjacent farmland, the idea that when you get here you'll be alone to enjoy stunning views of the rugged coastline, sea and sky. From the cliff-top you can see Cape Borda in the distance, the north-western tip of the island and Cape Torrens. Down below is De Mole Beach, where the De Mole River meets its end. It's a photographer's paradise - the coastal scrub ventures right to the edge of the cliffs....At Cape Forbin, you can have the beach to yourself. For most of the year the beach remains intact, except in winter when wild storms wash much of it away..."
None of that has changed although the lodge itself has been significantly upgraded. It offers:
- modern, high quality accommodation for six (two bedrooms, one a large loft with partition)
- free broadband satellite and Wi-Fi internet
- DVD player, Hi-Fi, satellite TV
- modern kitchen and facilities
- solar power with automatic back-up generator
And most importantly:
- isolation and privacy in stunning natural surroundings
- your own, private, safe, swimming beach in summer
- your own creek, with huge natural pool running up from the beach for 250 metres
- fishing off both the beach and rocks
- great bushwalking and spectacular views along the highest cliffs in South Australia, with wild coastline on either side
- for birdwatchers, often from the front porch, the endangered glossy black cockatoo, the magnificent and also locally-endangered white-bellied sea eagle, osprey, wedge-tailed eagle, blue wren, scarlet robin and many others
- friendly wallabies visiting in the evenings, goanna, echidna, brush-tailed possums...
A little over an hour from Kingscote airport, bordering on Cape Torrens Wilderness Reserve, it is on the far north western side of the Island towards Cape Borda. It has close access to Flinders' Chase, Vivonne Bay, Admirals Arch and Remarkable Rocks.
Warm up in winter by the pot-bellied stove/fireplace and watch the storms push in over Investigator Strait. On clear nights, isolated from city lights and overlooking the sea, you can enjoy excellent star-watching, either with binoculars or the 4.5 inch telescope provided. In summer, swim, fish, walk and enjoy the incomparable sunsets from outside over a glass of Kangaroo Island wine with the wallabies.

Wilderness and solitude
This retreat is simply amazing!! The drive in is so lovely and when you get there and see the view you just stop and stare and think wow!!
The house is very well set up and and super comfortable king bed with warm bedding which we needed as it was so cold and windy when we arrived.
We went to sleep hearing the huge waves crashing on to the rocks and next morning walked down to see 3-4 meter waves rolling in.
The magnificence of nature and feeling like you are the only people on the planet.
We even lit the fire one day to keep warm and it was wonderful ambience too.
Great wifi and phone reception just up the road a bit and the tv worked well too for such a remote location.
Sea eagles, Wedgies,a goanna and a pod of dolphins to see and the birdlife is just incredible!!
I spent many many hours sitting near the bird bath taking photos and watching all the beautiful birds bathing and drinking throughout the day.
The stunning Superb Fairy Wrens literally hop around you a few feet away.
This is a great honeymoon spot or special place for a couple or a family.
We can't wait to return one day.
Incredible location, incredible stay
Thoroughly enjoyed our time at Cape Forbin; location defies words for its beauty and solitude. Hosts are terrific, and went way out of their way. Highly recommend.
Stunning scenery! The house is only a necessity to keep warm and fed. It's the area that is amazing. Fabulous walks, amazing encounters with animals and fantastic drive up to the property. Everything was explained very well and had no troubles at all.
Very remote location in the North West of KI. Secluded and peaceful, exactly what we were looking for. Throughly enjoyed the views from the property and the wildlife - wallabies, kangaroos, goannas, right on your doorstep. Loved walking along the nearby clifftops. Appreciated the BBQ for preparing meals. Owners sent a email before our stay with loads of useful information and suggestions.
Worth mentioning that the property is at the end of a 17km unsealed road. This would prove challenging, especially I imagine in winter for those without 4x4 vehicles. This wasn't apparent to me when booking - not sure if this was my oversight, but wasn't a problem with our vehicle.
My only suggestion would be that the property needs a good spring clean - lots of dust/cobwebs in some cupboards and on shelves.
A real getaway at the end of an island.
Cape Forbin retreat was the perfect place to relax and get away from it all. A tastefully furnished stone home with stunning views.
Want to get away from it all, get back to nature in a luxury location then you can go no further. Cape Forbin Retreat lived up to it's reputation of secluded luxury on Kangaroo Island. The first thing that greets you is an amazing view, then it's the friendly wildlife that live nearby. The joy of being so remote is something we don't often get in our increasingly busy lives.
If we could have stayed forever we would have!
