Suggested activities for a week in Noosa;

The temptation for many people taking a break in Noosa is to settle into their resort apartment and just chill. But if you’ve come north to avoid the chill in both senses of the word – the cold of Victoria in winter and the fear that too much chilling out will dull the senses – then Noosa can be action-central. Here’s a seven-day itinerary that will drop you into all corners of the Sunshine Coast but still leave time to relax, hit the shops in Hastings St, catch a wave or enjoy one of the great events that make Noosa a hive of activity year-round.

Monday. Take a day trip to Fraser Island. World Heritage-listed, Fraser Island is the world’s largest sand island but unlike ordinary dunes, this one is adorned with rainforest, eucalypts, mangroves, swamps and coastal heaths. It’s an adventureland for visitors, with dozens of beauty spots, a network of 4WD tracks and the incredible stretch of Seventy-Five Mile Beach which serves as the island’s main road, shipwreck site, surf-fishing venue and, on occasions, an aircraft landing strip. Part of the fun of Fraser Island is getting there with a 4WD tour, as you visit some fantastic coastal spots along the way, and you’re able to leave the particular skill of driving on sand to the experts.

Tuesday. Take a tour of the Everglades. Part of the Great Sandy National Park north of Noosa, the Everglades are a series of lakes, rivers and wetlands. Some call these waterways liquid mirrors, such is the clarity of their reflections. If you can, take the opportunity to swim in the tea-coloured waters of Lake Cootharaba. The area is also rich with birdlife and marine life such as turtles, dugong and inshore dolphins, as well as mangrove-dwelling butterflies. The Everglades are easily explored on a half-day or full-day tour, either by comfortable cruiser or, for the more adventurous, by canoe. Some operators run multi-day canoe trips, and there’s even a self-guided option.

Wednesday. Visit Eumundi Market then take the Noosa Sunset Cruise. The Eumundi Market is a huge art, craft and produce market, held every Saturday (7am-2pm) and Wednesday (8am-1.30pm) in this historic hinterland town 20km from Noosa. It’s like an outdoor gallery, with towering heritage-listed fig trees above the 500-plus stalls. You will discover original artworks, sculptures, and furniture, handmade toys, homewares, skincare, fashion and jewellery, as well as fresh local produce and fabulous food to enjoy while you explore Eumundi. There’s also a line-up of musicians and street performers, as well as face painters and alternative therapists. The market is easily found on Memorial Dve. Many Noosa tour operators run a shuttle service to the market.

You’ll be back in Noosa in time to relax for a few hours before taking the Sunset Cruise with Noosa Ferry. This low-key one-hour excursion glides among the yachts of Woods Bay and past the fine waterfront homes of Noosa Sound. Passengers get up close to the Lake Weyba wildlife before taking in the sunset at the river entrance. Bring along your favourite drinks and Noosa Ferry will provide glasses and ice.

Thursday. Go whale-watching then relax on a gondola dinner cruise. It’s not just Victorians who flock to the warm waters of the Sunshine Coast for winter. Humpback whales stop off along the Fraser Coast each season with their new calves, to rest and relax before their long journey south to Antarctica. A whale-watching cruise into the calm waters between Fraser Island and Hervey Bay makes for a great day-trip from Noosa. Back in Noosa, you can cruise along the Noosa River in yet another unusual way – by gondola. This experience caters for up to six people, and the cruises can be either BYO or fully catered, serving just dessert or cheese or a romantic dinner cruise with all the trimmings.

Friday. Visit Montville/Maleny and the Glass House Mountains. The hinterland behind Noosa is known as the Soul of the Sunshine Coast, for its array of character-filled hilltop villages. The hub is Montville and its galleries, gift stores, boutiques, fine restaurants and cafes. But there’s also Mapleton, set among lush reserves and the Mapleton Falls National Park, Maleny with its undulating dairy country vistas, the cheese factory at Kenilworth, and the sweeping coastal views from leafy Flaxton. Most stunning of all are the Glass House Mountains, 16 volcanic crags that spring out of the flat landscape of eucalypt forest and pineapple plantations.

Saturday. Don’t miss Australia Zoo. This icon of Sunshine Coast family fun is amazing for the variety of wildlife that it holds, and the array of free shows. It’s got all the Australian fauna – kangaroos, koalas, wombats and snakes – but there’s something from almost everywhere else: tigers, elephants, crocodiles, free-flight birds, and now the new African Experience exhibit with savannah animals such as giraffe, rhinoceros and zebra.

Australia Zoo is at Beerwah, 75km south of Noosa via major highways. RACV members get discounted entry to Australia Zoo when they pre-purchase from RACV before they leave. Buy at , visit any RACV shop or call 13 13 29. The Zoo has a pick-up service from Noosa for $5 per person – ask your RACV consultant or the Noosa Resort staff for details.

Sunday. Drop into the Noosa Farmers Market then stroll in the national park. Sunday’s activities are low-key and close to the RACV Noosa Resort. In the morning (it opens at 7am), wander down to the Noosa Farmers Market at the Noosa Australian Rules Football Club – it’s only a few minutes’ walk along Weyba Rd. Pick up some fresh produce to enjoy as a relaxing lunch back at your resort suite or apartment. After lunch, take a stroll, have a ride on the complimentary shuttle bus or hire a bike from the resort, and head down to Hastings St and Noosa’s beautiful north-facing surf beach. Continue along to the Noosa National Park by following the path around the headland, returning via one of the various paths through the bush. By the time you’re back at RACV Noosa Resort, you’ll be ready for a drink and a relaxing meal at the new lounge/pizza bar, to reflect on how you’ve managed to do so much in one week. If you didn’t do it all, there’s always next time. Noosa’s balmy winter weather doesn’t go away.
