Featherstone's House of the Rising Sun is a completely new two story guest cottage. Professionally decorated and with every possible amenity, it is located on a totally private 1 1/2 acre beach. Away from all noise and traffic and with no electrical or phone lines in sight, you are at one with the sea and the sky.
The downstairs living area includes a full kitchen, dining area and living room with satellite TV, DVD and VCR as well as a sound system. All this decorated in a blend of tropical and Asian motifs. In front is a lanai with seating for afternoon relaxation. Out back, under the almond trees and in your private garden, is your very own hot tub.
Upstairs is a large bedroom with king bed beautifully decorated in the soft, relaxing colors of the sea. There is a large and comfortable window seat for relaxing and reading. Art work by renowned artist, Dawn Rentz, adorns the walls. The bathroom is adjoining.
There is a small refrigerator inside the large closet for the convenience of your cool drinks or snacks while upstairs. Outside this bedroom is a balcony for long range views of the Caribbean Sea that take your vision all the way to Little Cayman to the West and to the bluff at the East end of the island. It is large enough for resting, reading or eating.
Situated on the most beautiful private beach on the island, this cottage is luxury at its best!
By profession I have had, for over 30 years, an executive search firm that is specialized in Advanced Telecommunications. In addition, I have an Interior Design firm that serves the needs of the island community. All my children are grown. My other residence is in Asheville, NC.
Minnie Branch purchased this cottage in 2009
Cayman Brac is a British owned island and so a friendly and stable government. You can own property here without fear of having it taken away under an unstable government. It is an English speaking culture. There is absolutely no crime on Cayman Brac. The island is still in the top 3% of clean air and water left on the planet. The people are friendly and welcome guests to their island with a generous spirit. In addition to all this, it is a uniquely beautiful island with a bluff that rises to a height of 143' above the sea at the East End. Watching the moon rise from this pinnacle is worth the entire trip to the island. This, of course, does not preclude the fact that you can see the bottom of the sea at 30' or the sunsets that leave a green flash over the water due to their intensity or that the warm, balmy breezes will not let you have a moment of stress left in your body.
A vast white sandy beach that invites you to come in and play. A gazebo next to the sea where you can dine under the stars or just swing in a hammock to your heart's content. Your own private cottage where you can sit in your Zen garden in the hot tub under the almond trees or on your balcony overlooking the landscape of the island. Everywhere you look on the property it is gorgeous - the beach, the cottage, the owner's home and all the palm trees, foliage and flowers that abound plentifully throughout the property. There is easy access into the sea for swimming, snorkeling, diving or taking out the 2 person kayak. Planned as a place to rival Paradise on earth, this is the ultimate vacation getaway.
Minnie is hands down one of the most gracious, welcoming, and hospitable hosts I have ever had the pleasure of staying with. Her house is more like a home with all the necessities you could ask for, and I am sure if it is missing something then she would be happy to find it for you. The property is located at the end of a dead end street, and has access to her private beach. There are hammocks and chairs to lounge in while relaxing and it makes you feel as if you are the only people on the island. My fiancé and I went down to the island with the intent to elope; without Minnie I don't think we could have pulled it off. She went above and beyond to open her home to us, offered to have the ceremony on her beach, and by some miracle I think only she could pull off surprised us with a white wedding cake (which we managed to bring a slice home for good luck ). We fell in love with the island, the people, and the spectacular sunsets. The brac is not your typical tourist stop of an island and has an incredible culture. It is low key, mostly iron shore, and is known for it's amazing diving. I am getting certified to dive so that when we come back in November with our families I can experience even more of what the brac has to offer. This island will always hold a special place in my heart. I cannot begin to thank Minnie enough for everything she did for us, it truly was a wonderful experience that I will forever hold close to my heart.
Many thanks and we hope to see you soon,
Michael & Carrie Phillips
Minnie was amazing, and so is her little cottage. We stayed for 6 days on our honeymoon and could not have dreamed of more privacy. The nature! The size of the beach! The lounging options! Minnie has her beach set up for the relaxation of your choice. Hammocks! Lounge chairs, And a giant round rattan thing that became my personal favorite.
The island is full of great adventure and great people. So welcoming, friendly! We found everything we needed. Most days we were hiking and caving and discovering new water holes and beaches. But nothing beat the mid afternoon nap in the cabana on the beach in the shade and the breeze.....
The water was a bit rough when we were there, so getting into the water at the property wasn't easy. We had a couple of run ins with the sea urchins even with our water shoes. They are plentiful but easy to spot and easy to avoid in calmer waters. But we found other places on the island for water time, too. And no where on the island is far from you. The private hot tub on the deck was perfect at night, watching the stars.
The small cottage has sooo much space and is fully stocked! I loved the two floor layout with the bedroom taking up the second floor. It is large, open, with vaulted ceiling, ceiling fan, and lots of windows! The bedroom cooled down quickly at night. We felt instantly at home and enjoyed our time.
The property is gorgeous. We commented after touring the island how Feathertone was not only the prettiest we've seen, but one of the largest most private ocean fronts, and so well maintained.
Cayman Brac is very much an adventurer's island. We are not much into diving or snorkeling. But we had a great time! Plenty to do, see, enjoy.
Thank you, Minnie, for opening your property up to us!
The house is very nice , very warm, clean and quiet . Minnie was very good hostess . The house is recommended to stay for tranquility and nature
But we were looking for beaches where we can swim , and be resting on the sand . Cayman Brac is an Island of rocks, very windy, where only you can do is diving and snorkeling . If you want to swim you can only enter to the sea with shoes.
It was our honeymoon, and we have only 1 week , and our dream was to be on a beach.
Finally We left the house few days before , without recovering the rent already paid, and went to Grand Cayman, where we found beautiful and amazing beaches .
Cayman Brac is a very quiet small island to rest, but If you are looking for beaches, Cayman Brac it IS NOT THE PLACE.
There are few beaches on the island but all have rocks.
Our week at Featherstone was GREAT! While the weather didn't cooperate with snorkeling(it was very windy), it was sunny and warm all week. That was great considering we left ice and snow. Minnie was a delight to work with. I had concerns about flights and connections which she answered quickly. I was hesitant to book the house because of the stairs. We have bad knees and stairs don't always work well. The picture shows the stairs outside, but they are no longer there, however, the stairs inside were fairly east to navigate. Handrails would have made them easier. The house was cozy and private even though it was steps away from the main house. Minnie's style showed throughout the house. The downstairs was a little dark during the day, but the upstairs was light and airy. Since we didn't spend much time inside it didn't really matter. We loved the gazebos and spent most of our days camped out "holding down the beach" in comfortable chairs or hammocks.
The island is small and there isn't a lot of choice in either restaurants or groceries. We enjoyed the Star Island Restaurant. It is a local restaurant, the people are friendly and informative. Thank you, Minnie, for getting us fresh fish to cook! It was delicious.
For a quiet getaway, this is the place to go!
We stayed at the Featherstone's cottage for 9 glorious, wonderful awe-inspiring days. From the moment we arrived at the cottage we felt as though we were being welcomed home. Minnie met us at the cottage after our flight; she had the car rental agency lead us to her place. Meeting Minnie was like greeting a long-lost family member. She was so friendly and it was a genuine feeling of "oh my goodness, we've arrived"....feeling of relief. We have never felt so welcome, so happy and so safe. The next week or so, even though we rarely saw Minnie, we felt her presence through everything that surrounded us; her decor in the cottage, the cabanas on her beach, the placement of her landscaping items and her personal touches everywhere on her property. She truly does have a slice of heaven in her cottage and on her property. We met her on the beach one night for a cocktail and were inspired by her confidence and story of her life on Cayman Brac. She left us with one wonderful quote...."If I can't motivate you - you aren't motivatable!" We think of this every day, Minnie! If anyone has any hesitation of booking this cottage - do not! The cottage has every convenience and one wants for nothing. Minnie provides a starter jug of water, soaps, spices, and the softest sheets and towels. It truly is paradise found and we will return one day...and may never leave!!! Love you, Minnie!
My husband and I honeymooned to the Brac in December, and we were so impressed with Featherstone! Minnie has truly created a personal paradise on the island.
The cottage itself is situated on a property that also include's Minnie's home and a downstairs guest apartment that is also a rental property. My husband and I never felt as though we were anything but alone here at Featherstone, however. We only saw Minnie a few times during our week stay, and she was always respectful of our privacy. The cottage is further back than Minnie's home, but it is still only steps from the ocean. We always felt like we had the beach to ourselves when we were spending time there.
Minnie has done a great job with different areas for relaxation. There are two gazebos on her beach, each with two hammocks (great for a midday nap!). There are also several beach and lounge chairs for sunbathing. Cayman Brac is a rocky island, but Minnie's beach is one of the nicest we saw during our exploration. The beach is sandy and a bit rocky, but it is not the iron shore that is seen on the majority of the island. Wear water shoes!
The kitchen and living room were the perfect size for us. The bedroom is very beachy-feeling and so comfortable! There is a private deck off of the bedroom which is where the hot tub is currently, along with a table and chairs. We spent almost every night in the hot tub stargazing with homemade piña coladas or daiquiris. The deck no longer has the stairs that come down to the ground-level, as seen in the photo, but we liked it that way - it felt more private! Behind the cottage is a private patio area with a grill, table and chairs, and a hammock.
Minnie made sure that we were very comfortable during our stay. For the first few nights the island was extremely windy, and our power went out to the upstairs at one point. We didn't notice too much because we were gone most of the day, but Minnie called an electrician and the problem was fixed quickly! There is air conditioning in the cottage that we used on occasion, and it was very comfortable and cooled the home quickly.
Overall we loved Cayman Brac and our little cottage at Featherstone! The island is small enough that there isn't much nightlife, but there are plenty of restaurants. If you're looking for an adventure, this island has great hiking, snorkeling, diving, and fishing, and lots of cool history (with no shortage of ways to lounge around). :)
Thanks, Minnie! Can't wait to come back!
