Luxurious 5 star, 4 BR, 2.5 bathroom home in the heart of Newcastle
About Jacqui Harvey
Having travelled extensively with my family, I can appreciate the small touches that can change a good place to stay into a great one. Cooks Hill Chalets prides itself on exceeding your expectations! Originally from Sydney, I now live in Cooks Hill, and work one suburb away. My husband and I appreciate the beautiful character that defines heritage homes, and love to renovate them to show their full potential!
Jacqui Harvey purchased this House in 2011
Why Jacqui Harvey chose Cooks Hill
Living on the same suburb as the Grande Chalet for over 25 years, I can honestly say the area is without equal. Cooks Hill is a heritage area, and the surrounding streets offer a wealth of restaurants, boutique shopping, health and beauty options, together with cultural choices for even the most discerning traveller.
What makes this House unique
Having renovated several homes over the years, from the minute I walked into this heritage home I could see the potential. It had been neglected for many years as a rental for university students. However, there were strong "bones" including the original hallway fretwork and magnificent jarrah floor boards. With careful planning the Grande Chalet was born, offering 4 bedrooms with flexible bedding arrangements, and 2.5 bathrooms. The home offers all the amenities of a 5 star hotel, within walking distance of everything Newcastle has to offer!

Home comfort with walk to trendy Darby Street and Bar Beach
Three generations of us (grandparents, parents, and teenagers-6 of us in total) spent an excellent week in the Cooks Hill Chalets. One block walk to the restaurants and coffee bars on Darby Street and perhaps a flat one kilometre or so walk to Bar Beach. Perfect location on a quiet street with all of the amenities with ample space. House included a refuge in the form of a bedroom and bathroom (not quite an en-suite but close enough) at the back of the house for the grandparents. A nice touch was the small toiletry gift pack for each of the adults. Air conditioned throughout with an eat-in kitchen and a comfortable sitting room. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay- perfect for 6-7 guests.
Delightful. Comfortable. Everything we needed.
We loved this little house, it really felt like 5 star luxury. Spacious, beautifully appointed and very comfortable.
Living on the same suburb as the Grande Chalet for over 24 years, I can honestly say the area is without equal. Cooks Hill is a heritage area, and the surrounding streets offer a wealth of restaurants, boutique shopping, health and beauty options, together with cultural choices for even the most discerning traveller.
The home is centrally located at 50 Dawson St, Cooks Hill.
Walk on flat ground to the beach or the harbour foreshore, shop at world class boutiques, then enjoy dinner and Hunter Valley wines or beers at a local restaurant. Life doesn't get much better than that!
Little place on the corner of Corlette and Bull St called "Welsh Blacks", literally two blocks from the Chalet. (I leave several maps at the property and would be happy to give you some guidance after you arrive). Otherwise, anywhere on Darby St sells good coffee, including "Glee Coffee Roasters" or Goldbergs.
Great Food/Atmosphere (open early to late)
"Goldbergs" hands down. Like a European cafe, great atmosphere and food.
Also, there is a great chocolate restaurant called Coco Monde on Darby St.
For smoothies to die for (including Mars Bar, Cookies and Cream and other weird flavours), try "The Three Monkeys" on Darby St.
Marketown shopping centre is only 750m away, containing Coles, Woolworths, Big W, Dick Smith, Officeworks and lots of little shops as well.
There are many small boutique and designer shops along Darby St, with Jean Bas, HoneyBee goods and Carla Swimwear to name a few.
Larger Shopping Centres
Westfield Kotara (David Jones and a huge number of other stores) and also Charlestown Square (Main store is Myer. Also has the Reading Cinemas)
Rather than drive to Charlestown Square, you can walk to the Greater Union Cinemas in King St, less than a 10 minute walk away.
Check out the new "Anzac Walk" which runs up the cliff from Bar Beach to a lookout, beside Memorial Drive. For the more adventurous, the Glenrock Reserve, only 5km away, offers long walking tracks with beautiful scenery and animals.
Art Galleries & Museums
Take a short walk to the Newcastle Regional Art Gallery, Cooks Hill Galleries or John Earle Gallery, all within a 1km radius of the chalet. Take a walk to the harbour-side suburb of honeysuckle to visit Newcastle Museum or Newcastle Maritime Museum.
Take a wine tasting tour featuring delicious fine wines at the Hunter Valley winery, only a 45 minute drive away.
Newcastle Afoot Walking Tours
Becky Kiil runs the Newcastle Afoot Walking Tours, which offer a variety of walking tours around Newcastle. The groups are kept small (less than 6 people usually) and are a great way to get acquainted with the inner city area.
