Shack-like features, high price

  • 1 of 5

This property is inhospitable from my point of view. See what you think: if you think it's reasonable for 7 guests to be provided with 2 rolls of toilet paper over the Christmas period when the property's located in the middle of nowhere with no shops within reasonable access, at the best of times let alone Christmas, you may enjoy your stay here.

If you want a tiny living room in which guests must take it in turns to sit on the grotty rug because there aren't enough seats, you'll be happy.

If you don't care for an indoor dining table during mosquito season and you're happy to cook on an uncleaned BBQ, you're unlike me and my 6 friends.

We paid a high price for this tiny shack-like property (more than for a stunning place in central Paris!) and feel completely ripped off.

My advice: there are plenty of quality places elsewhere.

You'll be a lot happier to pay a quality-price for services that justify the high price, especially if they're provided by people who understand the meaning of hospitality from a broad range of perspectives, not just their own.

Owner's Response: Hi William & Neisha, We are extremely surprised and disappointed to hear that you did not enjoy your stay and have found Gypsy’s Rest to be to the point of being “inhospitable”. Guests usually appreciate the great lengths we go to, to ensure our guests are happy. In saying this, we will certainly take on any legitimate constructive feedback and if guests comments are indeed correct to put into place improvements wherever we can, regarding amenities or facilities etc. I can only suggest to you to research the property you are looking to book more thoroughly to ensure it is in line with what you are wanting to book. If you are a larger group requiring a larger house and 2 toilets (we have never had a large group feel they had to urinate in the garden, as you mentioned you had to do in your first private email to me) please book something larger and with 2 toilets in future. We would rather guests book an alternative property than to be this disappointed due to not researching the amenities, facilities and location. We realise you were extremely disappointed that we declined in refunding you, as per your demands in your email to me prior to your review, where you were wanting to pay only $180p.n for 7 guests over peak season, being 3 days over Xmas. I suggest researching the prices in peak season in and around Hobart before assuming the rate for this property was not accurate. Gypsy’s Rest is booked quite often right throughout the year and solidly through peak season and that is because it is priced how it should be in the holiday house market for this location. We, like most other “self-contained” properties leave enough items to get you started, it is then up to guests to supply the odd required items such as extra toilet paper (as it states in the compendium). Self-contained accommodation is not the same as hotel’s who restock everything and service daily. Holiday houses obviously have so much more to stock then a hotel, as we supply everything from laundry powder to kitchen items, including olive oil, cling wrap, bin liners, a variety of tea's, coffee's, hot chocolate, coffee pods for the coffee machine we supply etc. In fact, we supply a lot more items than most places. If this was unacceptable to the point of ruining your Xmas you could have contacted us and this could have been fixed very quickly. I am not sure why you did not find the shop as it is literally a 2-minute drive away, which you actually have to drive pass to get to Gypsy’s Rest (I

Amazing place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

This was a lovely property to stay in. The views were amazing, the house was very comfortable and functional and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The fact that is pet friendly was a bonus. Everything we needed was right at our fingertips and it truly was a home away from home. I would highly recommend this place to anyone and can't wait to go back there again myself.

Beautiful little gem

  • 5 of 5

Gypsy's Rest really made our trip special. We visited Tasmania on short notice and under difficult circumstances but the holiday home brought comfort and peace when we needed it. The view is really special from both the main bedroom, the living area and the decking, the courtyard provides an excellent windbreak to enjoy meals, the decking is beautiful and the extra studio is very peaceful with a great view of the bay. The customer service was great and very helpful. There was an awesome selection of teas provided and all the utensils you could need. The decor is all pretty awesome and there are some beautiful pieces around the property.

The only critique i can provide is that the water pump next to second bedroom was quite loud particularly in the mornings but it really wasn't a big issue for us. The house is cosy and would shine as a retreat for a couple.

Overall, having a beautiful space to lay our heads and a beautiful view to wake up to made a big difference for us and we greatly appreciate it.

Holiday haven!

  • 5 of 5

We had the most relaxing stay and Gypsys rest was my favourite pet friendly stay while in Tassie. It was nice to have somewhere safe for the fur-babies while out exploring and was surprised how easy it was to visit Hobart and Port Arthur; but it was extra special to spend time with everyone just chilling out and enjoying that view! Boys fished, while I relaxed on the deck!

perfect holiday destination and will be back one day!

We recently stayed a Gypsy's rest with my brother and his girlfriend for three nights and we all had such a great time. The home has a really relaxing feel with great views. We spent alot of our time on the deck (soaking in the view) which has a great day bed and outdoor setting. Only a stones throw away (literally...we tried) from the deck is the water front, and your met with cute boat shacks and crystal clear water. The owners were great to communicate with and seem like really genuine people. Its a great distance from Hobart, far enough away to have a small beachy town feel but not to far to drive in and have a day in Hobart. Highly recommend checking it out :)

Owner's Response: Hi Stuart, Thank you so much for your review! It is great to hear how much guests enjoy there stay @ Gypsy's Rest. It is a special little spot and very protected in that particular bay (Gypsy Bay). We are always trying to improve Gypsy's Rest and have a lot in store for this holiday house over the next year or so, to make it even better! We look forward to you coming back to enjoy another break! All the best. Verina :)
