Carol & Geoff Matters invite you to enjoy a relaxed stay at the Spalding "Country bakehouse". Our century old bakehouse residence has been tastefully renovated, blending antiques and modern furnishings for style & comfort.
Country bakehouse is a unique historic Residence & Bakery full of history & charm.
Spalding is central to the wine region of Clare & the historic township of Burra & provides a base for day trips to the lower Flinders Ranges. Walkers and bike riding enthusiasts are welcome as the Mawson and Heysen trails meet at Spalding.
Uniquely situated by the Broughton River, Spalding hosts annual fly fishing competitions and a two night booking includes a "catch and release" permit for those who wish to try their skill at trout or cod fishing.
Continental Breakfast provisions are included in the tariff and a well equipped, country kitchen and gas BBQ are provided for your convenience.
The Country bakehouse is an ideal place for romantic couples to share a weekend, families to stay for short breaks & holidays or trail walkers to spend a comfortable night after a brisk walk on the Heysen & Mawson Trails. We provide a "home away from home" with lots of interesting reading materials, family board games, DVD's and a large digital screen with satellite TV.
Attached to the residence, in the old bakehouse is an extra teen retreat room. This room is ideal for extra family members with a queen and two single beds provided. Two families of 4 can comfortably share weekend accommodation with 3 queen beds, two single beds and a sofa bed.
Why not take a weekend break, go fishing or photograph the Broughton River, visit wineries or coffee shops in the Clare Valley or explore dugouts and underground tunnels at the historic mining town of Burra.
Travel North through Jamestown to visit the Railway Museum at Peterborough or South to the Historic town of Mintaro to lose yourself in the Maze or make a visit to Martindale Hall. Because we are central to so many Historic towns we are able to provide a comfortable retreat at the end of a day exploring the Mid North of SA.
Fishing & Small Town Experience
The Country bakehouse is situated in the small town of Spalding,178km north of Adelaide and on the fringe of the Clare valley. The Heysen & Mawson trails meet at Spalding and we have excellent sporting facilities including a Summer swimming pool, oval, tennis courts, parks and playground. There are historic Churches a Post Office and Primary School. The General store and Barbed Wire Hotel are open for take-a-way food & drinks 7 days and meals are available Thursday- Sunday at the Country Spalding Hotel.
The Fresh Water river flows through Spalding to join the Broughton downstream. Visitors can enjoy the river scenery and your accommodation includes a "catch & release" permit for trout fishing enthusiasts. You may not catch a trout or a cod but you could enjoy a day out along the river exploring the pools & why not take a picnic on a Spring day.
Spalding proudly hosts the SA fly fishing competitions where Australia's trout fishing competitors meet to compete annually. The Bundaleer reservoir will be opening in 2016 for Recreational fishing.

Enjoyed our stay greatly.
Beautiful old home. Tastefully furnished and very comfortable. Able to accommodate families large and small. Wake to birdsong.
Really enjoyed having your family stay at Country bakehouse Jan. It was great to have a talk & get to know you. Thank you for making the time to leave the house so clean & tidy. You didn't have to strip the beds but it was appreciated. I'm sorry the hot weather came in so suddenly on your final day. Hope to have you stay another time Jan.
Great place to wind down
This was excellent accommodation for an Easter wind-down with friends. It is ideally situated to explore the region and Carol had prepared the house immaculately. The history walk around Spalding was very interesting also.
Thank you for your favourable review. I like to present our character residence to its best to give my guests a comfortable relaxed stay. Although Country bakehouse accommodation is so ideally situated to share the best hidden secrets of the Mid North, I often feel short changed by being in such a small town without several options for guests to dine out. Fortunately we have the Barbed Hotel across the road for meals, Thurs - Sun. and a friendly grocery store open 7 days for coffee, breakfast food & lunches as well as the many high quality venues throughout the Clare Valley just 36 Km. south. Our own Broughton River attracts tourists with some amazing views and a trout or two for keen fishermen.
Lovely and very spacious property
We had a lovely stay and Carol (the owner) made sure everything was ready for our arrival. She even contacted us to say we had left one of our children's teddies behind. It is a charming old property with lots of space and made a good base to explore Clare Valley region before heading on further north.
It was lovely to have your family stay Henry. Thank you for signing our visitors's book. We really do love to have overseas visitors to our small town. We hope you enjoyed your holiday break in SA & will one day visit us again.
Lovely house and wonderful hostess
The pictures of this house do not do it justice. Beautifully presented with an eye for detail used. Everything you may need was available. The main bedroom with its little sitting room/sunroom was an unexpected and pleasant surprise. Great place to stay. Hoping to get back to do some trout fishing.
Wonderful to have you & Peter stay at Country bakehouse & we are so happy you appreciated all we have to offer our guests. Would be fantastic if Peter could get his fishing gear together & come up for a weekend on the river. Free fishing permits are available to guests but we seem to get more trail walkers than fishermen. Thank you for such positive feedback Raelene.
loved the house and the town
This was a beautiful discovery. It is a great house over the road from the local pub which has a lot of great characters and good food. Very easy. Carol is a fantastic hostess too. Thanks.
We really appreciate your positive remarks Paul. It was a pleasure to meet you & welcome you to our small town. I will pass on your appreciation to the Hotel. Regards, Carol

This B&B is lovely. Beautiful furniture and furnishings. We were very comfortable and our little dog was made very welcome. He loved exploring the big backyard. Fantastic old fashioned kitchen was like stepping back in time to childhood. Lovely host who showed us around the property and the old bakery section. Will definitely go back.
