please visit <www.tripadvisor.com>for reviews. Many quests tell us what a great time they had and what a wonderful place. When they get back to the states they get caught up in the hurried daily routine and soon forget to leave feedback.
Everything you'll read in the reviews is right on. Everything John put in the description is the way it is. It's like being at home on vacation with your best friend or neighbor ready to help you when you need it. Sue celebrated a birthday with friends while we were there and they didn't hesitate to invite us to share a drink with them. Hired John for a great tour of the island one of our days there. He stopped for us in Coxen Hole on the way back and we picked up lobster and snapper for a couple of our dinners. The Salty Mango is a short walk away serving great breakfast and lunches. Blue Island Divers is also a short walk away. West End is an easy taxi ride away. Eating is cheap on Roatan. Great snorkeling is a short swim away. John, Sue and their help Ronald are some of the best people you'll ever meet. Ronald climbed a tree out front for a couple fresh coconuts for us that he cut open. We also sampled Sue's salsa and John's Key Lime pie.
We just got home last night but we sure did not want to leave. It was our 8th visit to Hobbies Hideaway with another visit planned in August we just love it there! It is everything we want in a vacation- right on the beach and water- the second largest reef in the world is right off the pier!! John and Sue are the best hosts possible and Ronald their right hand helper is wonderful. They pick you up at the airport and take you back, they take you to the grocery store they
try to do everything they can to make your visit the best. We just love them!!
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Hobbies Hideaway (Mar 1-7th, 16). It was exactly as anticipated, except somehow we lucked into a large, two bedroom, full kitchen, big bathroom apartment (expecting a smaller accommodation). We loved the space and all the amenities. John and Sue are more like your wonderful next-door neighbours - always ready to help, provide advice and Sue even makes home made salsa for her guests! The snorkeling is wonderful, as are the sunsets and friendly, well-behaved dogs.
My husband and I came for a week and had an amazing time! Hobbies Hideaway was the perfect place to stay for privacy on a budget. John and Sue were great hosts! The beach was private and just breathtaking. And the snorkeling at the reef just past the pier was awesome! They were very accommodating and took us out on the boat for snorkeling and had Ronald take us zip lining! A must to do while you're there! Thank you so much for your hospitality! Will be back again I'm sure!
Hobbies Hideaway right on the beach in Sandy Bay is in a perfect location for endless kayaking and snorkeling (we did both every day). Most days my husband and I only saw 4-5 people the entire day, peace and quiet is our idea of a perfect vacation. It is the most tranquil setting you could hope to find.
We had a two bedroom, 1 bath apartment and were provided with plenty of towels for our 7 day stay. The kitchen came equipped with all the necessities needed for every day living. The refrigerator/freezer was large enough to handle all of our cold storage products for a full week, with more than ample room to spare. The air conditioner for our place kept us super cool and comfortable when we were inside. Wifi is available, though it can be spotty like everywhere else on the island. If you want Ritz accommodations, this place is more pedestrian, but if you want all of the awesomeness that Roatan has to offer, Hobbies Hideaway is the only place to book your stay.
John (a knowledgeable captain and font of historical island information) and Ronald (the maintenance man and human embodiment of the Swiss Army Knife) took us out on one of the boats to snorkel our last day. It was great fun, we got to see Ronald spear a lion fish, he is extremely adept at spotting things in the ocean that appear to be amorphous blobs to the untrained eye, one definitely wants to snorkel with him. After the outing Ronald plucked and deftly macheted fresh coconuts for us, what is more rhetorically tropical than that?
Sue was able to set up a private cook for us one night. Laura the chef made us island spiced chicken, red beans with rice, fried plantains and bananas as well as a small salad with her super tasty homemade dressing. Laura was another fabulous addition to our stay.
Every day we took one of the two, 2 seater kayaks out right from our beach access point where we would randomly pick a portion of the Meso-American reef to drop anchor and snorkel. Not one day were we anything but stunned by the vast array of fish, conchs, lobsters and ocean flora. Our little GoPro (we would recommend any underwater camera) worked overtime to document the amazing colors of all the flora and fauna as well as the various blues of the ocean itself.
Hobbies Hideaway in Sandy Bay is the place to unwind and relax when you need respite from the everyday trials and tribulations of your fast paced existence.
We had such a great 2 weeks with John and Sue. We enjoyed the property to the fullest. The dock with hamacks and star gazing, the huge patio with bbq for dinners outside, the proximity of the beautiful coral reef, the free kayaks and snorkling gear, clean rooms with functionnal AC... cannot ask for more. Add to this the most helpful and kind hosts! They pick you up from the airport (and drive back), take you to the store regularly and even go out of their way to make you you enjoy your stay. John took us to Coxen Hole to buy fresh seafood instead of the grocery store, took us to West end to show us the village, have a few drinks and point out all the best spots. He even invited us to go fishing with him. He usually charters fishing trips, but since there were no planned charters, and he felt like fishing, he decided to invite us!!! 9 baracudas and 1 hour of snorkeling by a wreck, the day was a success!!
So all in all, Roatan is awesome, and John ans Sue make it that much better! They are great hosts, and their rates are some of the lowest you will find.
