About William "Chip" Ball
Our Story of Redemption and Healing Both William "Chip" and Quay were healing from painful divorces when Chip's sister set them up on a blind date in late June of 2004. Quay was also healing physically from a devastating head-on collision car accident in 2003 that crushed her chest, arms and legs and nearly killed her. She learned to walk and feed herself again after several months of rehab, but the accident tragically took the life of her youngest daughter Avery Brooke who was only 20 months old. Quay was living in Indiana and Chip in California so after going on a couple dates in Indiana, they decided to enter in to a one year long distance courtship to see if they might have a future together. They got to know each other through phone calls and emails and a monthly visit. They vetted each other extensively before allowing their emotions to get too engaged but by October Chip was convinced that Quay was the woman with whom he wanted to spend the rest of his life. In December during a Christmas visit, he secretly asked her parents if they would approve of a marriage with him and got the green light. In February he asked her to marry him in front of his entire family at a restaurant when they were vacationing in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. They were married on the 365th day of their one year courtship and had their first kiss on their wedding day on 7/7/2005. Quay moved to California with her two young children who survived the accident, and blended her family with Chip and his three children. It was a long time dream of both to own their own guest cottage so in 2015 they broke ground on a guest house on their property to be named "The Story Brooke Cottage" in honor and remembrance of Avery Brooke. Both put their heart and souls in to the project which showcases Quay's flair for interior design, one of her many hobbies. The Story Brooke Cottage was completed in June of 2016 and has been enjoyed by all who have stayed there since.

Beautiful, relaxing retreat, close to everything!
My family had such a wonderful time on our recent summer vacation, in part due to our stay at the Story Brooke Cottage. It is conveniently located to all the usual San Diego area attractions, but more importantly, it's so close to the beach and the adorable Carlsbad Village area. Chip and Quay have created a beautifully decorated, cozy retreat, that was perfect for us when returning from a long day of sightseeing or beaching. The cottage fit the four of us comfortably. It was stocked with everything we needed, from Keurig coffee pods and trays for cookie baking, to extra blankets for my girls (so that I could keep the windows open all night to enjoy the ocean breeze without freezing them out!). My favorite thing to do was to have some quiet time in the morning with my cup of coffee on the balcony, while my family slept off the previous day's adventures. Our hosts offered their availability if we needed it, but allowed for privacy while we were there. Though, I wish I could have met Quay to tell her how much I loved her beautiful home! Thank you, Chip and Quay, for your part in helping us to create wonderful memories. We are blessed! We hope to visit again!
Beautiful, comfortable and relaxing
Chip and Quay were so nice. The house was perfect size for my family of 4. A wonderful place to come back to and unwind after a long day at the zoo and beach. I definitely recommend staying here!
Fabulous..sweet and cozy
Warming hosts from check in to check out. Managed any issues we had and were very accommodating. You won't be disappointed.
A beautifully decorated, peaceful retreat.
Chip and Quay are wonderful and gracious hosts. They were helpful upon checking in and available if we needed them; but allowed the privacy we desire when staying somewhere. The cottage is charming and the decor reminded us of remodels we've seen on HGTV Fixer Upper. So lovely! It has everything you need for a home away from home (including beach chairs, beach towels, and boogie board). Bed is comfortable, closet is nice. We enjoyed the porch area; great place to read, relax and enjoy the sunset. Close to "the village" and beaches. Would love to stay here again!
My husband and I visited Carlsbad for his birthday getaway, and we could not have found a more delightful property. This was our first foray into the HomeAway world, and we were extremely pleased that we chose the Story Brooke Cottage. The owners were most welcoming and very responsive when we had questions regarding shopping, restaurants, etc. The cottage itself was beautifully decorated and had everything we needed for a wonderful, peaceful week of vacation. We would highly recommend this charming cottage to all. Thank you, Bill and Quay, for the lovely stay!
You won’t be disappointed
We had a wonderful stay at the cottage. It was a cousins getaway and this suited our needs perfectly. Carlsbad is a favorite destination and we enjoyed our visit by staying at the Dtory Brooke Cottage. Didn’t get to enjoy the pool because the weather didn’t cooperate but enjoyed all the little touches. It is upstairs so keep that in mind when booking.
Our place is close to the beach, restaurants, dining, and nightlife in the Village, two malls, Legoland, and major freeways. You’ll love our place because of the ocean peak view, new house, and the neighborhood. Use the pool from dawn to dusk. Parking in the driveway next to the house with gate code provided. Garage is not accessible. Second bed is a full size fold out couch with memory foam mattress. Our place is good for couples, solo adventurers, business travelers, and families (with kids).
If possible we enjoy meeting our guests and helping them get settled with their bags and providing a quick tour. We have high vaulted ceilings so even though the space is only 640 square feet, it feels bigger. Guests tell us that photos don't do it justice.
You have access to the upper level of the house. The garage below is currently our storage unit.
We live in the front house which looks like a story book cottage. We are on site and available if you need anything or would like recommendations on places to go, things to do, or great local restaurants.
The house is accessed by stairs at the rear of the building. There are 18 steps to the top so if you have difficulty with stairs, you may be more comfortable renting a single level unit.
