About the property

2 Bed/2 Bath House & 1 Bed/1 Bath Cottage w/ Kit.(ADD'L $) + sleeper sofa/futon

Are you seeking a grand, oceanfront cottage near Acadia National Park nestled in the forest? Each morning, be one of the first in the nation to watch the beautiful sunrise over idyllic Frenchman’s Bay. Walk out from the house and head out to the water by way of the new stairway, down to the gravel beach to swim or launch your sea kayak or canoe. You can fish in the ocean without a license from the dock or try your hand at trapping lobster.

SUNDAY TO SUNDAY rentals preferred.

This oceanfront cottage rents April through October with weekly rental from June 15th through September 30th and short-term stays (minimum of two nights/three days) outside of those dates making it ideal for a long weekend getaway! The cottage is less than ten minutes by car from Bar Harbor airport and one hour from Bangor, Maine.

The cottage is two miles from the Hull’s Cove Visitor Center, which is the north entrance to Acadia National Park, where you can spend your day hiking or go kayaking on the pristine waters surrounding Mount Desert Island. Drive there, bike there or take the bus with your bike, which can be loaded. Ranger programs, hiking on graded paths up the mountain or biking or walking on the carriage trails (no cars) are fun things to do. You can swim in a lake with a lifeguard or dare the 'Ledges' and enter Echo Lake by the cliff.

You can get a license and fish on Hamilton Pond which is within walking distance. If you are familiar with kayaks, paddle across the way to the MDI Biolab and float through the stone arch at high tide, or paddle further around the point and picnic in the 'Ovens' which are shallow waterside caves w/ pebble beach.

If not everyone has a car, it is an easy twenty minute walk (3/4 mile) to the free ‘Island Explorer’ shuttle, which stops at the Bar Harbor Camp Ground during peak season (consult their website for schedule). The shuttle goes into town and covers most of the island taking you on a scenic ride of the island’s beaches, coves, and more.

Down the road is Pirate's Cove mini-golf as well as Mainley Meats (Bar-B-Que), Bay Gulls bagels and deserts and ice-cream and the Bar Harbor Lobster Pound (set the table, order your lobsters, go pick them up and enjoy on the deck).

The cottage is a ten minute drive from the town of Bar Harbor where you can head for restaurants and shopping. Restaurants for every taste abound from the Chart House, a sea-side fish house, to Havana's, a Latin restaurant with a wine list of note, to Epi's a downtown cafeteria, to Nostranos, a private Italian restaurant. During July and August music abounds with the Bar Harbor Music Festival (with live opera) and the Northeast Harbor Chamber series. Repertory theater is good and the local cinemas are where the locals go. Nearby is also Kebo Valley Golf Club, a historic golf course in Bar Harbor.

Additionally, about 30 minutes away in Ellsworth is a seasonal locomotive, which takes visitors on a scenic ride.

The home has 1,884 finished sq. ft. and has capacity to sleep up to 8 people with ADDITIONAL rental of the guest cottage with kitchenette, which is an additional 450 sq. ft. There are 2 bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms in the main house. One bedroom has a queen size bed (Sleeps 2) and the other bedroom includes a queen size bed (Sleeps 2) and a double bed (Sleeps 1). There is also a sleeper sofa in the living area (Sleeps 1-2). The guest cottage is the size of a small studio and has a queen size bed (Sleeps 2) with full bathroom and a kitchenette. Should any additional separate sleeping arrangements be needed, an inflatable mattress is available upon request. **Additional fees for parties over 10**There are two separate bathrooms that can be accessed from the common areas, each with a tub and shower and one bathroom with a washer/dryer.

Enter through into a tiled Kitchen with island seating for two. The adjacent Dining Area offers seating for six, as well as an intimate seating area in front of a gas fireplace for a relaxing glass of wine after a long day of exploration. Next find a second dining area with a glass table suitable for four people, perfect for morning muffins and a hot cup of coffee. About Sabrena

Assistant property manager for rental property in Bar Harbor Maine.

Sabrena purchased this cottage in 2007

Why Sabrena chose Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island

This home was purchased by a part time resident and developer in Maine for its million dollar oceanfront location in 2007. The home was renovated and was going to be resold before the market downturn in 2008. It is now a great rental and has been renting out to lucky travelers for the last four years.

Great place to stay, big house

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay. House was big on the inside. Heat worked great. The view was beautiful. We were watching the tide rising on the private beach. The only thing That could make our stay better is a hottub outside or a pool table on the inside.

Great on the outside, adequate on the inside

  • 4 of 5

My family just spent 3 nights in this cottage. Overall, we were very happy with the accommodations. The outside of the property is phenomenal as you have a clear view of Frenchman's Bay and private access to the rocky shoreline. The kids enjoyed going down to the shore and skipping rocks, searching for little creatures, etc. We saw dolphins while we were eating breakfast. As a bonus, we could view the sunset from the property (which I wasn't expecting).

The interior of the home was serviceable given the price comparison to other cottages in the area. I was surprised at the size of the interior as it felt much bigger than the picture would lead you to believe. The interior could be cleaner and could be fixed up but I didn't go to Bar Harbor to sit inside all day so I didn't mind. I found it to be a great value.

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because the listing said 3BR and quoted me a price. When I went to book, I found out the third bedroom is in the guest house which was an additional fee to book. I found this to be misleading.

Overall, we had a great time in Bar Harbor. This cottage is 7-8 minutes from one of the entrances to Acadia so it worked out really well for us. It was also a short drive (maybe 5-10 minutes) from downtown Bar Harbor. Mount Desert Island is a lot bigger than I realized so being close to everything was a bonus.

Lots of room for family gathering!

  • 3 of 5

Property turned out perfect for our family gathering place for our son's wedding in Hull's Cove. Convenient location to restaurants, Bar Harbor, Park Entrance and off-island. Property provided all the basics. Well appointed beds and baths. Great to have a washer/dryer. Beautiful views with quiet residential neighborhood. Water had to be accessed by neighboring Colony cottages. No air conditioning that we could fine but the weather was pleasant and cool at night.

Great Location But Older Home with Many Updates

  • 3 of 5

Overall, spectacular location. Easy access to water, Acadia, and Bar Harbor. House was mostly clean when we arrived, with the exception of spider webs in corners of some rooms and spillage on the bottom of the fridge.

First issue we had was that we had 12 people and even though the house and accompanying guest house could sleep 12+, they could not accommodate 12. There was only a dinner set for 8 and only 3 hand towels and 3 wash cloths, although there were ample bath towels. We ended up using paper everything to eat with so the garbage piled up and could not be held by the three garbage cans in the shed.

Also, one of the biggest turnoffs was the mustiness in the guest house. There was a dehumidifier there when we arrived, however it was full and had to be emptied twice a day in order to keep up with the moisture. Running it made the guest house very warm and our guests were not comfortable. The guest house was uninhabitable when we arrived because it was so musty. The bathtub was clogged as well so our guests had to use the main house facilities for showering.

The house is old, probably turn of the last century. It has been updated but needs some tlc in terms of cleaning. A lot of privacy and even though there are rental cabins next door, you can't really see them or hear them.

Owner's Response: Based on this customer's feedback, the house has been stocked with additional linens and place settings. The main and guest house capacity is 10 and this renter had additional guest beyond our advertised capacity. Both the main house and the guest house now have both dehumidifier and A/C units installed, to help keep reduce the humidity and keep the homes at a comfortable temperature. We are diligent in responding to any customer comments on the cleanliness, and have adjusted the cleaning companies as necessary. We appreciate any comments from our guests, and try to address them properly.

Water Front in Bar Harbor

  • 4 of 5

This comfortable house is just a few minutes outside town on Frenchman's Bay I believe. Really pretty sunsets in the summer. The house is spacious and comfortable. Owner's very easy to deal with and I would recommend this spot for your next vacation. Being a 1/2 mile from entrance to Acadia park is great!
