Light-filled apartment across from Prospect Park
Although the building doesn't look promising, and the stairs are dark, steep and narrow, arriving on the second floor this apartment is a wonderful light-filled surprise. The photos shown are accurate as long as you know they were taken with a wide-angle lens so the rooms although nice sized, aren't huge. The furniture is comfortable, especially the bed. There are plenty of reading lights, although only one on the left side of the bed. Kitchen is well equipped and there are shops within a short distance that will provide most necessities. There are two air conditioners, one in the bedroom and one in the living room, both are window models. Both are rather loud and I found sleeping with the bedroom one on was difficult, although it was too hot during my stay to sleep with it off.
The owner is easy to deal with; friendly, helpful and courteous. Everything was as described and I enjoyed my stay. I recommend this property for an enjoyable stay in Brooklyn.
Sloping on The Slope
The neighborhood is called "The Slope" and the floor definitely does. Anything on wheels rolled toward the staircase all by itself, and we had a glass of wine tip on a computer (not caused "by" the slope, but assisted). There are also several places where the floor level changes so there were stubbed toes as well. Overall, however, the apartment is clean and cute and the location is excellent. Don't let the narrow staircases that lead you to the entrance fool you; something quite nice awaits inside. Full set of dishes, cooking items, salt, pepper, tea and coffee were nice to have. We would stay here again. The price is competitive, but on the high side compared to the other apartments we've used.
Very Nice Apartment.
My overall impression of this property is quite good. The apartment itself is nice. There are two air conditioners which keep it nice and comfortable. The furnishings are nice and the bed is comfortable. The owner is really easy to work with and responds promptly to questions or requests. He is easy to work with and provides all the info you need. The property is convenient to the subway and prospect park is really nice to walk through. I think it is a pretty good value for the price. My only complaints are that the stairway is very narrow and steep so it would not be a good place for an elderly person to stay....luckily I am not elderly yet haha. Also, the apartment itself, although clean and well furnished, could use some updating, especially with the floors which are all uneven and pretty old looking. Of course that is to be expected with a property of this age and for the price we paid. I would stay here again especially if we come to visit our friend who lives a couple blocks away. Last thing was the recommended car service from the airport.....its a good deal and driver was prompt. Regular taxi drivers will not take the shortest way unless you specifically tell them the route. It cost us 57 bucks to taxi from JFK to the apartment, and 45 bucks to use the car service which was much much nicer.
The apartment was just as beautiful as in the pictures and really made the most of every inch of space. There were maps and attraction guides in the desk. The Christmas tree was a great touch--it really made our holiday stay festive! I will most definitely stay here again.
Christmas in New York
We stayed in this lovely apartment opposite Prospect Park in Brooklyn. We found the location ideal, it was right next to the Metro which we used every day to get around NYC, and we enjoyed coming out of Manhattan back to the cosy environment. It took approx. 40mins to get to Times Square and the Metro left every 30mins from Prospect Park station. We did not use taxis at all during our stay to get around.
The apartment is split level with one main bedroom which was small but comfortable; the radiator got far too hot of a night and could not be controlled.
The living room is spacious and can fit up to 6 people, although unfortunately the sofa bed was broken by the previous guests (but fixed on 26/12) and my daughter had to use the sofa chair instead, which was very comfortable. The pipes can be a little noisy early evening, but went away once the apartment was up to temperature. There is a desk and TV and Jon kindly put up a Christmas tree for us, which made it feel very festive.
The kitchen area was wonderfully equipped with lots of crockery and pans etc. The bathroom was clean and bright with a good shower. Lots of clean, fluffy towels supplied.
The only negative to the apartment was the door to the apartment. We felt this was a security issue, and did feel very uncomfortable on the first night as the door is an internal thin door which could easily be broken into and was badly fitted. That said there is a main door into the block (2apartments) with security key pads, and we had no problems, but I do think that this needs to be addressed to make guest feel their belongings are safe while away from the apartment.
All in all this apartment was excellent for us (a family of 3) and we really enjoyed our time in Brooklyn. The neighbourhood was very welcoming, we used the coffee shop, Conneticut Muffin a few times and also the Winsor Café. The local shops are well stocked with the Meat shop having freshly prepared meals that can be heated.
Prospect park apt
I have stayed at many places with VRBO, and I have to say that Jon has been one of the best owners to deal with. He was responsive(although usually through email only), and very flexible and accommodating with check-in/out times, which is a big deal when you have hours before your flight. The apt was clean. The bathroom and kitchen were big. Very nice to have Prospect Park right outside your door. The subway station was an easy walk(even in Dec), with lots of restaurants right around the corner. It is about a 30 min train ride to manhattan, I recommend the unlimited metro pass because you will ride the subway a lot. I enjoyed the time on the train, because it was our first time in NYC, so it gave us a chance to experience "real life" in the city. The apt lends itself to that experience as well. You are submerged into life in Brooklyn, even having to enter the building right next to your downstairs neighbor's door (they were quiet -never a problem).Steep steps and a claw foot tub to consider if you have physical limitations. Don't hesitate to rent from Jon.
