Needs a bit more TLC but a very good place for walking and touring.

  • 3 of 5

This cottage is clean and comfortable and in a beautiful part of Mayo. It is very close to a beach but this beach is not walkable (we did see a seal, however). The cottage has all the basic amenities but instructions need to be given for the heating - it was very chilly when we arrived; and no sign of the wifi password. The cottage is wooden floors throughout without any rugs; there is very little proper space for clothes (one bedroom is only big enough for a double bed); minimal crockery (6 cups, 6 plates etc -); nothing terrible but not very welcoming. Two plastic outdoor chairs; no table and an almost unuseable can opener! It felt very hands off though I reached the owner rapidly by phone and he was very helpful. It felt like it was being seen as a 'business'. Just some more TLC please!

Beautiful seaside retreat.

  • 5 of 5

Sea Cottage offers a perfect place to explore all that the West of Ireland has to offer. It is set in a beautiful location overlooking Clew Bay and the surrounding country side and mountains. The cottage itself has everything you need including a cozy fireplace in the living room and a full kitchen. Louisburgh and Westport towns are very close by with shopping, groceries, restaurants and of course pubs to enjoy. There are also several beautiful sandy beaches in the area. We highly recommend bringing wetsuits if you plan on swimming, surfing, snorkeling etc. There are countless outdoor activities in the area also. We very much enjoyed the long walks, climbing Croagh Patrick, and biking on the Great Western Greenway which runs from Westport to Achill Island. (you can rent bikes for a very reasonable cost). We also loved taking the ferry on day trips to Clare Island, Inishbofin, and Inishturk.

We highly recommend staying at Sea Cottage, we miss it very much.

Comfortable clean unfussy welcoming home

  • 5 of 5

A lovely, well kept, comfortable and welcoming home from home. Thoughtful extras were appreciated - music, videos, radios where your want them (ie not just the living room), fuel for a fire, basic food stuffs in the cupboards. The 4 swallows nesting in the shed were a joy!! Great location - well the West is - but down a quiet boreen, practically on the beach - great! Pity about lack of easier beach access, but hey - as long as you can nip over the wall, its not a problem. And thanks to our host for quick and effective response to a question re heating. Great stay. Now if you could do something about the weather.....

Beautiful area wonderful cottage

  • 5 of 5

Our first visit to Ireland we wanted to experience nature and hiking. We have been able to climb a 2000ft peak at Claire island, walk the rim of horseshoe mountains in Connemara National Park and behold the breath taking views at the Cliffs of Moher. Would highly recommend visiting Claire Island(great hikes across the entire island, beautiful beach)and biking the Greenway. Clewbaybike hire dropped us in Achill and we rode 46km back to Westport for a fantastic ride with wonderful views. You can do all this from your very comfortable cosey home base at Sea Cottage. Mark was very responsive to our needs and questions. You will be very happy here. I will miss the view out the kitchen window of the the bay and mountains.

Great property and location

  • 5 of 5

We wanted a nice place in county Mayo that we could use as a home base to make day trips around the area and then return back to a comfortable and relaxing place. an we found it with the Sea Cottage.

We only had 2 minor issues that Mark was very responsive to and we were able to work through. One was that the manager had not dropped off the key, so we were not able to get in, but the neighbor had a spare key for emergencies and she was more than happy to lend it to us for the stay. The other thing was that the washing machine did not work, but after a couple quick emails and phone calls to the Mark the owner we came to find out that after some recent maintenance it was not plugged in. I had to merely pull it out and plug it in. Everything else was perfect from that point on.

Everything was as it was represented and Mark gave some great suggestions for things to do and places to eat. We did a Hawk walk, climbed Croagh Patrick, Took the Ferry over to Clare Island (walked and biked around there). Went to a sheep dog herding exhibit, did the Foxford woolen mills, made a few visits to Westport, visited Clifton and Ashleigh Falls on the way, and hiked in Connemara National Park. We would stop back in Louisburgh and have a pint, eat dinner or get some groceries to take back to the cottage. The occasional walk down the road to the bay and the fresh sea air.

It could not have worked out more perfect for us. We hope we are lucky enough to find as great a place on our next trip. We would not hesitate in recommending this place to any one of our friends.

The Sea Cottage: A place to return to

  • 5 of 5

If you want a cottage on the Atlantic with a beautiful sea view, this one is for you. We absolutely loved the cottage and its view of the Atlantic. I miss the lapping of the waves up to the pier, which was about a minute walk from the Sea Cottage and our wonderful views of Clew Bay. The rooms were nicely furnished, not elegant, but pleasant and livable. The shower was wonderful and provided immediate hot water. The description of the property on the HomeAway website was accurate, the photos representative of what the cottage was like, and to reiterate the views were marvelous. The owner provided useful suggestions of restaurants and activities and since this is Grace O'Malley, the pirate queen's domain, there were plenty of Granuaile castles and abbeys to seek out. Nearby Louisburg and Westport provided things to do and restaurants and pubs to seek out. We listened to trad music both in Louisburgh and in Westport and could have found music every night in the many pubs in these two towns alone

The property was clean and well maintained except for some plumbing problems that we had. Those problems were addressed promptly by the owner (Mark Grehan) who consistently responded quickly to our emails.

I would definitely recommend the Sea Cottage to friends and relatives and were I to return to County Mayo would definitely consider staying there again.

My suggestions for improvement would be the following: put a nice table and chairs on the patio in front to take advantage of the sea views and plant more flowers and shrubs on the property to make it even more attractive.
