This property is located a block from the Rufino Tamayo museum, and yes it is surrounded by beautiful churches. There is a Mexican fresh food market a few blocks away and a big super market just a bit further. You will be able to hear the Church bells calling people to mass. You can walk to the Zocalo and Santo Domingo. The apartment is in a gated building with some private patio areas, and some patio areas are to be enjoyed by all. There are people living there long term and others who come for short term. There is bound to be someone to talk to. The apartment is small but comfortably equipped with the basic necessities. It has some antiques along with traditional furniture from Oaxaca. The curtains are hand woven. There are beautiful hand painted talavera tiles in the bathroom and kitchen. We hope you will feel at home!
I dont enjoy writing negative reviews but this was one experience that warrants such a review. The owner knew we were arriving by plane from Mexico City. Our flight was delayed by one hour an when we arrived at the compound, there was no one there to greet us. We were literally left locked out standing on the street. Finally we gained access to the compound and became orphans to a nice couple from Alaska.
Four hours later after numerous emails and unanswered phone calls someone arrived to give us access to the apartment. The apartment was not a one bedroom as advertised but rather a studio with no separate bedroom. The apartment was dirty, there were still crumbs on the shelves in the kitchen, a filthy toilet, broken light bulbs in the clothes cupboard and an infestation of ants in the apartment. The bedding was worn and the blankets stained. Several apartments experienced water problems (water running out) and the day before we left, we spent several hours without water. The manager comes and goes at the whims of the owner and so you are left to fend for yourself. The entire compound is crumbling and filthy dirty. At night time you are left stumbling in the dark with ony a minature flashlight to fin your way. After 20 years of visiting and renting apartments in Mexico, this was the worst.
The apartment was very clean. However be forewarned it is very noisy. It is on a busy street that is well used by buses, so after they stop at night it does get better, but it still has some loud banging from people hitting the front locked gate in the night. After we figured out what it was we were able to relax and go back to sleep. The hosts are very helpful but there is little English spoken. The location is terrific!
Our condo is located in downtown Oaxaca about one block from the Rufino Tamayo museum and 5 blocks from the main square (the Zocalo). Also about 5 blocks from Santo Domingo. You are walking distance from everything! You are surrounded by churches which can be seen from the patios on the rooftops. The condo is inside a gated building, it is like walking into an old Oaxacan building, only it is built into little one bedroom apartments and studios. The condo has Talavera tiles in the kitchen and bathroom. Also a few choice antiques are used to furnish the condo, to give it the old Mexican flavor.
