You wake up to hear the gentle lapping of waves… it feels like it’s only metres away from your pillow. You grab your coffee and take a few steps, through the garden and onto the sand. The warmth of the sun on your skin, the feel of the soft white sand on your feet, and the smell of the crisp sea air makes you feel alive… THIS is what a holiday should be!
At Tidal Whispers, this is your every day.
Beachfront accommodation doesn’t get much closer to the beach than this. And when it comes to spectacular beaches, Boat Harbour Beach is simply one of the best. Here you’ll find crystal clear blue waters, pure white sand and stunning blue skies that stretch to the horizon.
The Tidal Whispers beach house is a traditional Boat Harbour Beach 'shack' and still has many features of its original 1940's design. We have endeavoured to provide an authentic experience for our guests, balancing the preservation of this ambient cottage and its quaint features with a renovation that ensures comfort and style.
If you are looking for an authentic, quirky, and absolute beach frontage traditional Tasmanian shack, embracing its 1940's heritage and character, then this is the accommodation for you.

This beach house is a traditional Boat Harbour Beach shack and still has many features of its original 1940's design. Here you will enjoy spectacular 180 degree panoramic views of the beach and ocean, the warmth and charm of seaside cottage ambience, and unique and quaint quirks. Due to its heritage the ceiling height in the ground level of this beach house, where the bathroom and laundry are accessed, is quite low (e.g., as low as 5”6 or approximately 170cm in some parts) and guests will need to take care when passing through these areas.
This property is accessed from Port Road via approximately 25 steps with a supportive handrail. Likewise, access from the property to the beach is via approximately 8 steps with a handrail, and access from the upper level (containing kitchen, living area, and bedrooms) to the lower level (containing toilet, bathroom and laundry) is via a set of approximately 14 internal stairs.
Based on these heritage and access considerations, please consider whether this accommodation is suitable for you, particularly if you or your guests have mobility issues. This property is not wheelchair accessible.
Tidal Whispers has been accredited by the Australian Tourism Accreditation Program - a federally endorsed, quality assurance scheme. This means that we can proudly display Australia's national symbol of tourism quality, the T-QUAL Tick.

About Lesley McKinnell
Hello from Lesley and Georgia, Boat Harbour Beach, Tasmania. We are delighted to share our beach house (or 'shack' as locals call it) with you and hope you will love it as much as we have over the past 60+ years. Our family purchased this gorgeous place in the 1950's and our family's children and their children have enjoyed it ever since. In 2011 we decided to open our home to guests so they too could enjoy this magical place. Since this time we have welcomed guests from all over the world and get so much enjoyment out of watching them fall in love with Boat Harbour Beach like we have.
Lesley McKinnell purchased this House in 1955
Why Lesley McKinnell chose Boat Harbour Beach
Our lovely little shack was built in the 1940's, shortly after World War II. The man who built it was named Harry Lay and he worked as a piano importer in Wynyard. Due to building materials being limited by post-war difficulties, Harry decided to build part of the shack from the wooden shipping containers that his pianos arrived in from interstate. What resulted was a lovely little cottage, affectionately named 'Tinkledell' (the original wooden sign has been preserved on our front gate). We adore this place for so many reasons, mostly it's character, unbeatable location (literally a few steps from the property onto the silky white sand) and incredible 180 degree panoramic views.
What makes this House unique
There are many properties listed in the Boat Harbour Beach area now, however only a handful can boast absolutely beach front like ours. You will discover this as you step onto the deck and realise that at high tide you can throw a pebble into the ocean, or step down off the lower deck, onto the lawn and then onto the sand. There is no better location than Tidal Whispers. Guests will also enjoy the ambience of this original Boat Harbour Beach 'shack', renovated to ensure your comfort yet still maintaining it's quaint character with a homely and warm touch.

Just Breathtaking and right on the beach.
From the moment we arrived we were stunned .... a beautiful view right on the beach and second day 9 dolphins in the water .... how wonderful.... the house had all the supplies we needed....we will be returning very soon.
Thank you very much for your lovely review. It was a pleasure hosting you and your guests!
Great view, but safety issues
Gorgeous location and view, but be aware that this stay is not for everyone. The in-dwelling notes acknowledge what the website doesn't: that the conversion from shack to holiday home left it with real safety issues. If you are over 6 foot, consider taking a crash-helmet, because you need to stoop under a ludicrously low ceiling on the lower floor. The final step down to that lower floor is deeper than the other steps and the floor tiles in the shower are dangerously slippery. The main top floor has an inexplicable change in level, so leave a light on at night! How the local Council passed this as a habitable dwelling is somewhere between a mystery and a scandal. Equally mysterious is why a T-QUAL tick was awarded.
Hi David and Christine,
We’re pleased you enjoyed the location and view, thanks for staying. We’re sorry you felt there were safety issues and appreciate the constructive criticism.
The quirks of the property of course relate to its heritage as an original beach shack. While others in the town were razed and rebuilt, a major renovation instead gave us the chance to balance modernising the layout with preserving character and heritage. We thought this was crucial. In fact, it’s for this reason the property was given a concession by the Waratah-Wynyard Council as part of its Certificate of Occupancy.
Our website previously mentioned the heritage aspect of the property, however we’ve updated the description to make this clearer. You might have noticed there was hazard tape across the low points of the ceiling and lower-ground step you mentioned, plus the bathroom tiles are non-slip. We’re happy to check these again.
Relaxing family accommodation
A beautiful and peaceful location. Laying in bed, all we could see was the ocean. The balcony had a great swinging chair that was very relaxing. The beach was at our doorstep - we even saw a pod of Dolphins swimming in the ocean! The house was very well equipped with everything we needed to have a comfortable stay with our 2 children. One night wasn't enough.
Best view in the world!
Loved every minute of our stay! Stunning outlook, the sound of waves made sleep blissful and the house was fully equipped with everything we needed to make our stay super special. We will SO be back!
Perfect beach escape
We had the perfect holiday. The house was so close to the beach and very comfortable. It had a great relaxed feel. BBQs on the deck, the beach just off the verandah and the surf club for great coffee a short walk down the beach.
We've had such wonderful holiday break at Tidal Whispers . Waking each morning to that exquisite view and the sounds of the ocean on the shore was truly lovely.
The cottage was well equipped and very comfortable.
Looking forward to next year and doing it all again in 2017!
