I was so excited to stay in this charming cottage. But the experience was far from as charming as the pictures. It was cold at the time so having to go outside to the only toilet/shower in a separate out house was not charming. The stairs to the upper floor are rickety at best. I don't get how they pass any kind of building inspection. But I convinced myself it was quaint. Then I went to bed. The bedroom
smelled of mold and everything was slightly damp. Since it was 1am, I was exhausted and crashed. I woke up in the morning with red, swollen, itchy eyes and hives all over my body. I tried to get a hold of the owners but got no response to my calls and email until late in the afternoon. I delt with female owner who was not only difficult, but honestly frightened me a little. She is not just odd but seemed quite unstable. The monger we spoke the more random her thoughts became and the more angry she got. She said the cottage had not been used for about a month but that it was filled with the positive energy of fairies and all the geodes she had placed around and in the property... That it had the positive energy of her artist friends who had stayed there and it had always provided a healing respite for her friends. She refused to accept that the cottage was musty and that the bedding was unclean. She went on to say that if I did not like damp and misty I shouldn't come to Mendocino and that if I was in better shape (I am in the heavy side) maybe I wouldn't be so suspectable to allergies. She kept talking about my energy fields. Then the diatribe about how she is the descendant of the first settlers of CA and non-native Californians like me did not appreciate the way of life in Mendocino. (Mind you she was not Native American... I looked up
Her ancestor... He was a missionary settler). It was the craziest conversation I have ever had with a host... Or anyone for that matter. And all I wanted was a refund. She could see that one of my eyes was swollen shut and the other was red and watery. After a long email exchange she finally gave me a refund.
My wife and I were looking to get out of town and decompress. "Cozy, restful cottage in the woods" is exactly what we needed, and it's just what we got.
OK, the cottage is very small and there is a steep staircase between the two levels. Some people may not be comfortable with these attributes. But if you don't mind the "coziness," you will find the cottage is a charming, rustic getaway that offers a VERY quiet, relaxing place to stay.
Max and Caroline have equipped it with everything you need (the fresh half and half was a nice touch!), and it's clean. Plus, the place is located within walking distance of the village of Mendocino (maybe 10 minutes). Not having been to Mendocino before, I was charmed by this quaint, small town that offers some fabulous food, great coffee and an unbeatable scenic view of the ocean.
We stayed here while in Mendocino for a wedding. The cottage was small but just right for the two of us. The cottage felt secluded and private despite being behind the owners' home. We had complete privacy and the property was lovely. The cottage was close enough to downtown that we could have walked (although crossing Highway 1 would have been a challenge even with the stop light). The owners were very sweet and welcoming. It was a relaxing stay.
We were so happy to find this tiny house to use as our base for a local wedding. The owners are friendly and helpful, top class hosts. The accommodations were well kept, warm, friendly, clean, with a comfy bed. It was the right amount of space for the two of us, and we loved having morning coffee out on the deck. The town center is a quick walk away (we're NY'ers so we tend to walk everywhere), and the ocean views from the town are magnificent. Highly recommended and would stay there again if we are in the area.
Great place with friendly owners. Could not have asked for more for a getaway with my wife.
Thank you, Caroline, for providing such a charming retreat. The cabin is cozy, comfortable and has everything you need to make your own meals, which you will want to do more frequently than you might think because the deck just off the kitchen seems like it is in the middle of a private forest. The bed is very comfortable, a big item for us, topped by a thick, warm quilt. There are portable heaters if you need them, but the cabin retains the day's heat and you probably won't need them during most of the year. There are many artistic touches throughout the property and the cabin itself. And, yes, in just a few minutes you can walk to downtown Mendocino, which we did several times. There is a farmer's market to check out and numerous excellent restaurants and hiking trails. Don't miss going down to one of the beaches, though those particular trails can be a bit steep. Photographic opportunities will keep you busy, too. Caroline has other rentals if this one is full. So glad we discovered this gem, Caroline!
Mendocino and the surrounding area has many attractions, a very picturesque coastline and pristine beaches alternating with cliffs and rocky outcrops. Great headland walks, beachcombing, fishing, rockpools. There are many hiking trails. Especially notable is the 'Pygmy Forest.' Great antiquing, and window shopping in the historic Old Village center, and the town boasts some excellent restaurants.
The Mendocino Art Center is a mainstay of the town with a wide variety of artwork. Great drives along the coast, 10 minutes north is the town of Fort Bragg where you can ride in an actual steam train called the 'Skunk Train.'
