Lilac Cottage has a heritage classification. It was built in the mid 1860's, at the height of the gold rush days in Beechworth, by a Mr W.U.Grigg. In the old municipal rates book he is listed as a "contractor". The house has had many different tenants over the years. Between 1878 and 1883 Rocklyn House as it was then called, was run as a school "for the children of gentlemen" where Mrs. Annie Goodman taught French, German, drawing and watercolours.
Her classes were held after normal school hours to serve as enrichment to the state education programme. Advertisements for her boarding and day school for girls can be seen in the local Ovens and Murray Advertiser of that time now held at the Burke Museum.
The four main rooms of Lilac Cottage were built from the local honey coloured granite and as was the custom at the time, the kitchen was separate. Originally this was constructed of slabs and shingles. The present brick building dates from the end of the 19th century. Sourced photos indicate that it is at least the third kitchen.
The verandah between the two buildings is now tastefully enclosed providing a delightful sunny reading area.
Excellent new bathroom and laundry facilities add to the comforts of Lilac Cottage without detracting from the character of a bygone era and the very special ambience that one finds within its walls. There are 2 bathrooms - one with a claw-foot bath and the other with disabled toilet and walk-in shower
This charming house and garden offer privacy and an outlook onto the rock face of the gorge, while the front verandah is an idyllic place to take one's breakfast or quietly sip a glass of local wine in Beechworth's golden evening light.
The cottage accommodates a maximum of 4 persons and has 2 bedrooms, both with queen beds. Please note that there is a surcharge of $40 per stay for 2 persons using 2 bedrooms.

Charming historical home
We have thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Lilac Cottage. It is the perfect place to stay for a visit to Beechworth, if you are wanting to immerse yourself in its early settler/gold rush past. The house has a really interesting history, where it was opened as a girls refining school for privileged families in the mid to late 1800s. However, despite our best efforts, we didn’t have much luck ‘refining’ our 5 year old daughters manners and etiquette during our stay ha ha! She couldn’t contain her excitement running around in the lovely cottage gardens. Anyway, we loved the stay and we hope to be back for another visit soon.
Thank you for your kind words. We are so happy that you enjoyed your stay at Lilac Cottage. Best wishes with "refining" your daughter, maybe she will remember the beautiful gardens and grow up loving plants and beautiful things. We hope to see you again in the future - the team at Lilac Cottage

Charming Period Cottage
Very comfortable 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom 19th century cottage. We experienced quite cold weather and the cottage was very warm thanks to aircon and wood combustion fires. Excellent service from our hosts when having difficulties connecting to WIFI (our problem). Kitchen very well equipped and functional. Bed warm and comfortable.Tastefully furnished. Highly recommended. Would definitely stay again.
Thankyou Julie and Harry.Lilac Cottage offers a lovely cosy retreat on a cold winters day. We look forward to you staying with us again and enjoying all the comforts of Lilac Cottage and its history.
Superb! Enchanting Cottage
What a fantastic cottage! - It was just what two couples wanting a friends weekend to catch up required. We had decided to plan on eating at our get-a-way for the start & end of each day and was pleasantly surprised on the facilities available to achieve that. Our evenings were complimented with the warming atmosphere of the fireplaces, music selections and books. It was such an enchanting experience that we would certainly love to return in the future.
Thank you Debbie for being so appreciative of the charm of the cottage and the little touches we have added to help make your stay memorable. Do come and stay with us again.

Lilac Cottage was beautiful
Lilac Cottage was a gorgeous place to stay, the French influence was delightful. The open fires, the decore and imagine our surprise to find a piano. We listened to French cafe music and played the piano each night. What a way to re- charge our batteries. No TV required on this get away ! Thank you so much.
