GREAT TOUR DE FRANCE BASE FOR STAGES 9, 10 & 11 IN JULY! Le Tour route runs along the Dordogne River just 20 minutes away from our village in 2017...our cottage is a perfect spot to enjoy the action. Les Cerisiers is a cosy couple's retreat, at the edge of Monpazier, an iconic Dordogne village, listed as "One of the Most Beautiful Villages of France". This cottage is the old 'maison gardienne' or guardian's cottage for Villa Ste Therese - entirely refurbished recently. It is set on four peaceful acres, so you feel completely immersed in the tranquil French countryside...with this beautiful active village on your doorstep. Minutes from local attractions & major landmarks of the Dordogne. Relax under a shady tree in the orchard, or just unwind on the front lawns and enjoy stunning views of Monpazier as the sun sets.
The kitchen is fully equipped to create any feast, or stroll just 700 metres into the village to enjoy one of the many great restaurants & cafes. Recent renovations have created a stylish, comfortable country cottage, providing all modern amenities. There is a spacious living/dining area on the ground floor, and then up on the mezzanine is a comfortable large double bedroom. Completely separate, 70 metres away from the Villa, the cottage is private, peaceful and perfect for two. If you're seeking a tranquil retreat after a hard day's touristing, Les Cerisiers is ideal! The Villa (which can be viewed at Property #391654) also hosts indulgent tours each Autumn for small, relaxed groups up to 10, exploring the cuisine & culture of the Perigord.
There's so much to see & do in this part of the Dordogne, it's hard to be brief! But here's a sample of activities within less than 45 mins drive:
Chateau Monbazillac (25km west); Chateaux at Beynac and Castelnaud (25km north); Chateau Biron (6km south); Chateau des Milandes (20km northeast); Chateau Bonaguil (19km southwest);

Amazing underground Caves: Grottes de Maxange (15km northwest); Gouffre de Proumeyssac (25km north); Grotte de Font-de-Gaume (38km north);

Summer: regular night markets in the central square; summer brocante market
Autumn: randonees (guided walks) in the nearby forests, cepes market; autumn brocante market

Great weekly market every Thursday
The Village Itself is a Treasure: Famed as the best-preserved bastide village in France, Monpazier may seem like a small, tranquil place, but it is a working village...which means a good choice of shops & restaurants for you! In fact the restaurants range from casual pizzerias, to family-run bistros, to Michelin-recommended elegant fine dining. There are two small supermarkets in the heart of the village, as well as an organic produce shop, two charcuteries, a patisserie, a boulangerie, wine cellars, a pharmacy, beauty salon with steamroom and masseuse, & an ice-creamerie.
Monpazier is the perfect village for browsing (and taking home an authentic souvenir) as it offers a range of wonderful artisans’ galleries and showrooms. These include: an ostrich egg engraver, a ceramics showroom, a wood turner for bowls & decorative pieces, traditional soap & perfume shop, beautiful print & framing shop, clockmaker, glassblower, artists' gallery and handmade leather goods.
Monpazier is at the heart of the southern Dordogne: the perfect base to explore this gorgeous region. And it's an easy 45 minute drive to Sarlat & its attractions.
In Summer, enjoy swimming & paddling in the Dordogne river beaches at Limeuil, Tremolat or Plage Caudon at Vitrac. Or there's a lovely lake set next to Chateau du Lanquais - perfect for a dip and a picnic.
Or Just Relax at Les Cerisiers: The grounds of Villa Ste Therese were landscaped 50 years ago, in the French tradition of a gentleman's country house - hedging, shaped shrubs, established large deciduous trees, creating a vista in all shades of green. A series of stone-walled terraces on the southern slopes lead down to the orchard below - a wonderful place to explore & enjoy...plums, figs, apples, peaches, walnuts, cherries...so help yourself if they're in season! The northern lawn in front of Les Cerisiers has plenty of room for petanque, badminton, or volleyball. The cherry trees, walnut trees and laurel hedges create privacy between the cottage & Villa. Laze on a sun lounge on the terrace with a glass of wine and enjoy the peaceful view. We love the fact that we can walk into the village in 5 minutes & relax with a coffee just to watch the world go by! Monpazier's accredited as 'One of the Most Beautiful Villages in France' so we never tire of its ancient beauty and gentle pace.

We are an Australian family who have all been bitten by the Travel Bug! We are also incurable, unabashed Francophiles. The Dordogne is emblematic of everything we love about 'la belle France'...atmospheric villages, amazing chateaux, wonderful wineries, millennia of history, not to mention the cuisine. Some of the most iconic food and wines are in this region...foie gras, truffles, confit duck, Bordeaux wines, cabecou goats cheese, Monbazillac wines...the list is endless! And we love it all!

We have the best of both worlds at Villa Ste Therese - the peace and tranquility of four acres to enjoy, just a leisurely stroll to a lively active village, and location in an area overflowing with amazing ancient sights. At our place we can be as busy as we like, day-tripping all over this part of the Dordogne to see world-famous sights...or we can kick back and unwind at the Villa, never having to get into the car, as all we could need are at the house, or in the village on our doorstep. We felt instantly 'at home' with the Villa the first time we saw it - and the attachment grew when we stepped out onto the terrace to take in those beautiful views of Monpazier. And because we have both Villa and cottage on one site, it's the perfect base for our extended family & friends to gather.
Nothing beats the stunning views of ancient Monpazier over sunset drinks on the terrace. Instant peace and contentment!
Thank you for letting us share your lovely home in Monpazier. We thoroughly enjoyed it. It is a lovely area & we enjoyed visiting other bastides in the area plus a couple of the local chateaus. We have brought back a good amount of wine which we shall be enjoying over the next few months! (EXTRACT FROM GUEST EMAIL TO OWNER)
We stayed in Les Cerisiers as part of our honeymoon and it was the perfect place. The house itself was beautifully presented and is ideal for a couple. It is well situated just outside the village so is nice and quiet, but only a few minutes walk away from the village, which has plenty of shops and restaurants. The Dordogne river and the many tourist attractions based around it are about 40 minutes drive away, but there are also other lovely villages and other attractions closer to hand. Monpazier itself had a Medieval Festival and a late-evening cycle race while we were there, so if either of those are of interest to you, try to find the dates online before booking in case you can coincide. Highly recommended.
Our stay at Les Cerisiers was absolutely delightful! The internet description was spot on. The cottage was romantic, warm & cosy and very comfortable, with a wonderful log fire. It was superbly equipped and maintained, and we had excellent customer service with English housekeepers nearby to help, and cater to any of our needs, eg more firewood. The surrounding grounds were lovely with groves of walnut and cherry trees.The beautiful village of Monpazier was within walking distance, in fact you could see it just out of the kitchen window. The village contained everything you would need - several restaurants, cafes, butchers, patisseries, pharmacy, supermarkets, local produce shops, and various antique and gift shops. There is a fresh food market every Thursday, and markets at surrounding villages almost every day of the week.
There were a great many attractions in the area, with old historic chateaux and beautiful villages to explore. Regular antique fairs are held in many villages,if that is your passion. Excellent restaurants, from farmhouse dining to haute cuisine, showcasing modern creative cooking with the local produce, eg foie gras, duck, apples, walnuts, mushrooms. The food was amazing! The River Dordogne is a short drive from Monpazier and provides many water activities in the warmer months.
I would not hesitate to recommend Les Cerisiers for a relaxing, comfortable and most enjoyable holiday. You need at least a week, if not more, to truly experience this delightful French countryside location. Kerry Scott, Perth WA.
Thank you, Rosemary, for a relaxing fortnight in this beautifully renovated cottage. We greatly enjoyed shopping at the local markets and cooking up a storm to eat on our terrace overlooking the green valley and village of Monpazier. Even better was being able to use the figs, walnuts and chestnuts from the trees on the lovely grounds around the main house. When we felt too lazy to cook, we strolled into the village at night to eat at the fantastic restaurants there. On many mornings we wandered into the village for an early morning cafe and fresh pastries to start the day.
From our base in the cottage, we explored the local sites – Villereal, Chateau Biron, Monflanquin, Chateau Monbazilliac, Belves and other beautiful villages. And I can't forget a memorable trip to Sarlat and the wonderful views from Domme.
Would love to return for an extended stay!!
The ambiance of this cottage is amazing.
Far enough from the main house on the property to remain completely private. Clean, well appointed, cozy but not squashed in.
Lovely outlook onto gardens. Pool is great too, but if others are using it they can't be heard from the cottage.
Close to the village that has a variety of good dinning options, but a quiet night in next to the fire appeals as well.
Listing undersold it - I actually think its better than the description, as it is so private to the rest of the property.
Dordogne is renowned for its cuisine, iconic wineries, chateaux and rich history. Yet it is still such a peaceful setting for a relaxing holiday. It's the Land of 1001 Chateaux because at every bend is another stunning vista of an ancient chateau, and many are open for public visits, like Monbazillac, Milandes, Biron & Lanquais. This area of the southern Dordogne is full of amazing medieval bastide villages, many of them having earned the title 'One of the Most Beautiful Villages of France', such as Monpazier, La Roque Gageac, Beynac, Domme, Belves & Monflanquin. And for foodlovers, several Michelin-recommended restaurants are right on your doorstep. The climate is holiday-perfect most of the year, with sunny Spring days starting in April & May, then hot summer weather till September. Autumn is mild, mellow and tranquil, with rich golden colors in the surrounding oak forests...another ideal time to visit. Winter brings the gorgeous Christmas markets and truffle fairs...lots of fun! Within an easy drive are several gorgeous public gardens such as Marqueyssac & Eyrignac to explore, as well as amazing underground caves, like Les Grottes de Maxange at Le Buisson or Proumeyssac near Le Bugue. But if you don't want to wander far, Monpazier and Villereal 12km south offer great cafes & restaurants, bustling weekly markets & lovely artisans shops & galleries to potter in.
