About Donna and Jens Damgaard

Jens and Donna Damgaard, Owners

We were looking for a cottage to spend the weekends where we could fish on the Susquehanna. Desirable properties are difficult to find on the Susquehanna river because of railroad and highway construction. We are very blessed to have found this wonderful property! Upon the completion of the construction and landscaping we not only enjoy the property ourselves but are delighted to share it. The Carriage House is a special accommodation, private yet within a short distance of many sites and places to visit. As travelers ourselves, we have visited many places both here and abroad and have tried to incorporate the type of comfortable accommodation into our property that we enjoy ourselves. We hope you will love staying here as our guests!

Donna and Jens Damgaard purchased this guest house in 2016

Why Donna and Jens Damgaard chose Dauphin

The Carriage House was completed in Spring, 2016 and is a second residence on a six acre property which was purchased in 2011. It is located on the opposite side of the main residence (River Lodge) with a historical Pennsylvania towpath canal separating it and the Carriage House.

The main residence, a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified home was given a gold designation award by the U. S. Green Building Council in 2012 upon the home's completion. While the Carriage House itself is not LEED certified, some of the eco building design elements were incorporated in it's building such as it's geothermal heating system. A certified pollinator garden has been established in the towpath canal and the bee apiary nearby is in it's fourth year. The building stone used on both the private residence, and the Carriage House, as well as the retaining walls surrounding the property, was obtained from a nearby stone mansion that was destroyed by the Agnes Flood of 1972. Fifty-six dump truck loads of stone was repurposed in building the main house, the carriage house and various retaining walls surrounding the property.

Hundreds of trees, shrubs and native specimens have since been planted on this six acre property in the last four years by the owners. Norfolk Southern railroad whose tracks border the property made the historic towpath defunct when the railroad was invented. The rail cars became the new carriers of cargo replacing the canal boats and mules which were used to carry cargo up and down the river.

Originally after we purchased the property, we intended to build a cottage to spend weekends on the river. In the process, however, we fell in love with the area and the project expanded to include the building of both residences.

What makes this guest house unique

The Susquehanna River is home to many aquatic birds, including herons, egrets, cormorants, and eagles to name a few. Eagle watching is a regular pastime! Its vast eco system is home to many invertebrates and fish, including the small mouth bass which is popular sport to many fishermen. Deer, fox, beaver, mink, otter, groundhog, turtles and rabbits are some of the wildlife that is often seen here at the river. We appreciate the natural beauty of this place and seek to preserve it as much as possible.

Awesome Carriage House

  • 5 of 5

We had an excellent experience all the way around, both the house itself and the owners, Jens and Donna were so kind and welcoming. I'm in the real estate appraisal business and have been in many homes and rentals over the last 30 years and the finishes and attention to detail in this property were in line with an upscale personal residence, not a typical rental home. The home has all the amenities that you would expect with a relaxing feel and beautiful views of the river. We are very picky and have stayed in many nice hotels in the area but none were as nice as this Carriage House. We will definitely be back and hope that many more guests get to enjoy this house and the surroundings. We enjoyed seeing deer, many different birds and the extensive landscaping that was so classy yet intriguing for all of the different species and varieties that the owners have carefully planted. The house was also so clean that it didn't feel like a rental. Jens and Donna spoiled us with this place and we are very happy that they did! Our 12 year old son even loved it and he usually doesn't comment on where we stay. Thanks again for a wonderful stay.

Can't wait to go back

We had such a relaxing stay here. From the moment we arrived, everything was smooth. The house had everything we needed and wanted. It's obvious that Donna puts a lot of care and attention towards the house and guests.

Hands down, the best place we've ever stayed!

  • 5 of 5

The pictures are beautiful, but even they don't do this lovely home justice! From the linens, to the soaps, to the fully equipped kitchen, we wanted for nothing. Luxury and class all the way. The owners were extremely helpful and responsive, and we would stay here again in a heartbeat. The scenery and nature was breathtaking! Right across the water, in the foothills of the mountains. So much better than staying in a cramped hotel! We highly recommend this rental to anyone wishing to visit the HersheyHarrisburg/Gettysburg area. Thank you for a lovely time! Next time, we will stay longer!

Awesome place to stay on the Susquehanna River!

  • 5 of 5

My group stayed at the carriage house for 3 nights on a fishing trip to the Susquehanna River, and it was perfect! The house itself is awesome - almost brand new, decorated beautifully, very well-appointed, and extremely comfortable. Little details like a wall-mounted ipad wired to a stereo with speakers throughout the house and porch really set this apart from other places I've stayed. The location is great - less than 30 minutes from the Harrisburg airport and just a few minutes from plenty of restaurants and things to do. Best of all is the location right on the river - great views from the back deck (which is an awesome spot to hang out) and river access - our fishing guides even picked us up there by boat one day, and kayaks are also available for anyone interested. Best of all, though, is the owners, who live in a beautiful house right across the street and are extremely friendly and hospitable - they went to great lengths to make sure our stay was perfect and really made the trip for us! I would highly recommend staying here without hesitation!!!

Beautiful and well maintained property with quick access to many places

  • 5 of 5

When planning our trip to visit Hershey, we didn't want to house the family in a hotel for the week. Thus why we researched using HomeAway. I came across this gem. And while it wasn't directly near Hershey, it was close enough and had everything else I was seeking! It is a beautiful property with modern amenities and very clean! I was able to sit in the overlooking balcony to enjoy my morning coffee. We also opted to be true tourists and experience a local pizza and various restaurant options, which were great choices.

The owners also allow use of their kayaks to experience the river.

It truly felt like a home away from home. We were even greeted by the owner, who was so kind and responsive to anything we needed.

I would certainly stay here again! Great place!

We stayed for three nights at the Carriage House and found it be absolutely terrific. Donna was a fantastic host! The property is even nicer in person than in the pictures! We would absolutely return!
