Luz Villa Rental Photos and Description

Casa da Figueira: Private Villa with Pool, 3 Bedrooms, 3 Baths (Sleeps 8)

Casa da Figueira is a beautiful traditional Portuguese villa with a large private heated pool, gorgeous mature tropical gardens, and a private fruit garden. Discrete housekeeping services are provided during weekdays. Casa da Figueira is only a 5 min easy walk from a beautiful large sandy beach, a lovely village, excellent restaurants, and several cliffs with nature trails for hiking or biking. It is also located within an hour drive from 15 wineries and over 40 golf courses. Portugal has been named Europe's 'Best Golf Destination' for 2014. It is truly your private paradise!

Casa da Figueira is the perfect vacation resort for a relaxing holiday. A fantastic location for a private honeymoon, a group of friends, or for a family get together. There is plenty of room for children to play and adults to relax and enjoy the pool, garden and orangerie. With 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms the villa can accommodate up to eight adults.

Casa da Figueira has nicely decorated living and dining rooms, a fully equipped newly remodeled kitchen, free wireless internet and local phone calls, satellite TV, DVD, air-conditioning, fireplace, and two covered terraces that provide shade and excellent locations for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Two French doors open from the dining & living rooms to one of the covered terraces and walled-in private pool area which is only for you, your family or friends to enjoy. The pool is 1m deep on the shallow end and 2m 20cm on the deep end. It is over 10 meters long and 5.6 meters wide. The pool can be heated for an extra weekly fee. This might be needed in spring and fall. In the hot summer months the pool stays warm from the sunshine alone. Lazy pool chairs are available for your enjoyment. The front door opens to a covered terrace ideal for breakfast in the sun, connected to a large private courtyard where your children can play all kinds of ball sports. A winding pathway enters a lush enclosed tropical garden and the orangerie with fruit trees such as lemons, mandarins and oranges which are ripe in the winter.

The fig tree, which has delicious ripe fruit in the summer, gave the house it's name: Casa Figueira. It stands in the middle of the large yard surrounded by palm trees and an olive tree. The yard is completely surrounded by a tall beautiful white wall with gates that can be locked. This makes it an ideal location to bring little children who'll have plenty of secure room to play.

The newly renovated kitchen with plenty of counter top space has everything you need to prepare delicious dinners and clean up afterwards. The kitchen opens to a smaller courtyard with build-in barbeque. Behind the courtyard is the Orangerie with lemon, orange, clementine, and pear trees. You are welcome to enjoy the fruit when it is ripe. In addition we plant an annual herb garden with a wide variety of herbs that the clients are also welcome to use when cooking.

From the front courtyard a 70 meters private walkway brings the guests to a very quite cobblestone road. Walk this secure Parque da Praia narrow road for 250 meters (just a couple minutes) and you'll arrive at the lovely large sandy beach.

Casa da Figueira inside: The living room is connected to the dining room and has a brand new fireplace that you are welcome to use. Two French doors open from the dining and living rooms to the covered terrace and private pool area. The front door opens to another covered terrace linked to a large courtyard with a pathway to a lush enclosed tropical garden.

There are three bedrooms in Casa Figueira that can accommodate up to 8 adults. The master bedroom has a new king size bed (180cm x 200cm), a large wardrobe and dresser as well as an antique desk. The master bedroom connects into a beautifully renovated private bathroom with a large two-person bathtub and Portuguese sink. A second large bedroom has a traditional and comfortable double bed as well as a twin-size bed and a large build-in wardrobe. A sunny third bedroom has three twin-size beds and a large build-in wardrobe. It also has a new private sink. This is an ideal room for a family with many children. In addition to the master bathroom, there are two other bathrooms in the hallway, one with a full bath, one with a shower.

Casa da Figueira opens to a covered terrace, connected to a large private courtyard where your children can play all kinds of ball sports. A winding pathway enters a lush enclosed tropical garden with a variety of trees and flowers. The fig tree, with delicious fruit in late July and August, which gave the house its name: Casa Figueira. It stands in the middle of the large yard surrounded by palm trees, an olive tree and many other tropical plants. The yard is completely surrounded by a tall beautiful white wall with gates that can be locked. This makes it an ideal location to bring little children who'll have plenty of secure room to play.

The kitchen door opens to a second courtyard with a build-in open fire barbecue pit. Charcoal can be bought at the local Baptista grocery store. Behind the courtyard is the Orangerie with lemon, orange, clementine, and pear trees. The guests are welcome to enjoy the fruit when it is ripe. In addition we planted a small herb garden with a wide variety of herbs that the clients are also welcome to use when cooking.

On weekdays Amelia, our amazing housekeeper of over 20 years, provides exceptional daily housekeeping services. Towels are changed twice/week and linen once a week. Amelia makes you feel welcome and immediately at home and can help you with your laundry. Amelia will be able to provide friendly help and assistance as needed.Feel free to leave her a tip if happy with her services.

The pool is cleaned once a week on Wednesdays, the yard is taken care of once/week on Thursday.

There are plenty of opportunities to dine in Praia da Luz. Our favorite restaurant is called Onda Luz Restaurant and is located right when you enter the village of Luz and walking distance from Casa da Figueira. It looks plain and simple from the outside, but the food is just delicious and the service great. Ask for cataplana. Near the beach in Praia da Luz, also walking distance, try out the renovated 16th century Fortaleza or try one of the many small fish restaurants adjacent to Praia da Luz church. There is also a good Indian restaurant, Pasmina, next to the church. The Dolphin Restaurant, also walking distance from Casa da Figueira, is a fairly new South African restaurant in Praia da Luz that serves several very interesting and tasteful dishes. The atmosphere is also nice. The Papagaio in nearby Espiche (5 min drive) where you can eat as much as you want with a variety of 7 meats baked right at your table on a hot stone is also nice; they have fado (music) some nights.

There are also plenty of opportunity to explore the area. Here are a few half or full-day trips that I recommend. Walking or biking west of Praia da Luz on the nature trail adjacent to the cliffs gets you to Burgau, a working fishing village, and Salema with a beautiful beach. You can also make the scenic 2.5 hour hike from Casa da Figueira to Lagos.

Another half day trip is driving West of Praia da Luz towards the “End of the World”. About 30 km past Praia da Luz you reach Sagres with its Fortaleza which School of Vasco da Gama from where the Portuguese discovered half the world. A couple miles past the Sagres Fortaleza is Cape St Vincent which is the most westerly tip of Europe, called the “End of the world”. The coastline running North from Cape St Vincent is undeveloped and wildly beautiful. It faces onto the open ocean with nothing but the Azores between here and the East Coast of the United States.

The Algarve was recently selected by the German golf magazine as the best place in Europe to play Golf. The Algarve is a highly regarded year-round golfing destination, a true golfer’s paradise. There are over 27 fabulous golf courses in the Algarve with many more under development. Several of them are close to Casa Figueira. The closest one is just up the road (5min drive) called BoaVista at the entrance of Luz.

Exclusive Privacy: Casa da Figueira will be only yours for the week: you will be the only tourists there when you rent it, no-one else is allowed on the secure property except with your permission. We do want to keep the property in exceptional condition year-round. The pool is cleaned once/week on

The best way to get to Casa da Figueira in Luz is to fly to either Lisbon or Faro (airport in the Algarve). Lisbon is a 3 hour drive to Casa da Figueira and Faro is a 1 hour drive to Casa da Figueira. Both journeys are very scenic and on excellent highways. There is also an express bus and as well as a train connection between Lisbon and Faro to Lagos if you prefer to travel without a car. Lagos is a historic town about a 10 min drive from Luz. Once in the villa everything is walking distance: beach, shops (local grocery store delivers at home), restaurants, hiking. Lagos is accessible from Praia da Luz with an easy 20 min Onda bus ride Linha 4. Lagos has a refreshing, relaxing charm with lots of cozy restaurants, many bars, live music, local art shops and an active marina. A daily fresh fish market, weekly vegetable market and monthly flee market provide unique charm to the city. In fact there are many flee markets where you can find great treasures in towns all across the Algarve.

The Algarve also has many award winning wines. About 15 wineries are located within 1 hour drive from Casa da Figueira. Many of the wineries provide wine making tours and/or wine tasting opportunities. North of the Algarve is Aljentejo, a region with many internationally known wines. Although it is about a 1.5 to 2hr drive to visit the wineries in Aljentejo, it is definitely worth a trip.

I am looking forward to help you make your holiday at Casa Figueira as wonderful and memorable as possible. We hope you enjoy your stay at Casa da Figueira!

About Sophie Vandebroek & Jesus del Alamo

We were both born in Europe and now live in Boston, MA. Jesus teaches at MIT and Sophie does research for a technology company. We have 6 grown-up children. Flying to Portugal (Lisbon) is easy from Boston; and from Lisbon to Casa da Figueira is an nice drive on a new highway. From Europe the best way to fly to is Faro which is an hour drive away from Casa da Figueira. My parents bought Casa da Figueira in 1976 when I was a teenager. Casa da Figueira is a beautiful traditional Portuguese villa that has been in our family for almost 4 decades. We do yearly upgrades and maintenance to keep it in exceptional condition while maintaining the authentic atmosphere. In 2012 we renovated the kitchen and we have renovated the bathrooms, build a beautiful pool, completely surrounded the large property and tropical yard with a traditional white wall so its safe for children to run around. Each January we do significant maintenance so please do let us or Amelia know if something needs to be upgraded. Keeping a traditional Portuguese home in exceptional condition requires on-going maintenance work. Our own six children, now young adults, have enjoyed coming to Casa da Figueira at all ages. We are looking for individuals or families who will enjoy Casa da Figueira as much as we do and who can help cover the costs of maintaining this beautiful exclusive property and keeping Amelia, our truly amazing housekeeper who has worked for my family for over 25 years, employed. We are very much looking forward to hear from you. A comprehensive folder with information about Casa da Figueira, Praia da Luz and the Algarve is available for your use. Please do add your personal comments and suggestions so our other clients can benefit from your experience.

We hope you will enjoy Casa da Figueira as much as we do. Looking forward to hear from you!

Why Sophie Vandebroek & Jesus del Alamo chose Lagos region

Casa da Figueira, a traditional Portuguese villa with heated private pool and tropical gardens is paradise for us. The location is perfect: Lisbon is a 3 hour highway drive and Faro is a 1 hour highway drive to Casa Figueira. Casa Figueira is extremely closely located to the safe and large sandy beach in Parque da Praia, the beach park. In fact, you can hear the waves while enjoying breakfast outside. The 70 meter walkway gets you to a little cobble stone street that is one block from the eastern side of the beach. The Algarve has 40 fabulous golf courses, with the Boa Vista Course just 5 min from Casa da Figueira and 15 wineries. The villa is also one block from a nature trail that goes up the cliffs and is ideal for jogging, walking, biking or to witness amazing sunsets. The eastern limit of the beach of Luz is marked by the famous “black rock” noticeable since all the other cliffs are golden orange. Praia da Luz retains the charm and character of a traditional Portuguese village yet offers excellent facilities to complement the broad, safe, sandy beach. The narrow village streets meander up from the beach, past white-washed houses, an 16th century Fortaleza turned into a romantic restaurant and pretty yellow church offering many different religious services, to the village center with many restaurants, grocery stores, and a few pottery stores. The Algarve’s long Moorish control, its Mediterranean climate, and its abundance of fine sandy beaches endow the Algarve with a unique character. Separated from the rest of Portugal by rolling hills, Algarve, the southernmost province, with its abundance of sun, sardines and tuna, is an ideal vacation location. The closest city to Praia da Luz is Lagos. While Lagos is a very historic town, it has a refreshing, relaxing charm with lots of cozy restaurants, many bars, live music, local art shops and an active marina. A daily fresh fish market, weekly vegetable market and monthly flee market provide unique charm to the town.

What makes this villa unique

To answer this question, here is great feedback we received from one of our recent clients: 'We had such an incredible time. Your villa is charming, and obviously taken care of with a lot of love and attention. Amelia was wonderful, very helpful, and very patient with our questions. We walked everywhere, took tons of pictures, the views were stunning, and ate at pretty much all the places you mentioned. My husband went diving in Lagos, and all the guys went golfing up the road. We found the cork shop at the other end of the village, and we got used to orange egg yolks. We checked out all of Luz. We found the bakery and the soup shop. Quejadas were declared our breakfast food. We took a ride down to the fort in Sagres, and spent a day in Tavira exploring. That was an incredible crash course in history. We took plenty of pictures of the bridges, fort and churches. We climbed the mini mountain behind Casa da Figueira and walked all the way around it. That was more than enough exercise for me, but would not have missed it because the views and changing colors were perfect. By mid week, the guys were checking out the 'for sale' signs and comparing prices. We met all kinds of people, who were very kind. Needless to say we are not an overly quiet group, animated conversation being the norm, so at all the restaurants we went to, the owners came over and talked with us. Lots of stories were shared, and lots of advice was given. We were very surprised to find the beach being dog friendly which was great. We also had a person at the beach who made sand sculptures every day. There are so many other things we experienced on this trip that I am sure I am forgetting. In short, I have never had such a relaxing and thoroughly enjoyable vacation in my life. We all had a wonderful time and would consider doing it again.' - Janie, Ed & Travis Gschrey, New York State, USA Also very unique are Casa da FIgueira's tropical gardens and many mature fruit trees (for you to enjoy).

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi Sophie, we have had a wonderful time! We are leaving in the morning and are so sad to go! This has been such a nice vacation. We haven't done a real vacation in a very long time. We have done many travel destinations to see cities, but this has been a great relaxing trip! It helps when Amelia somehow secretly does the dishes when you are not looking! :) We have been to three different beaches (found some good surf on the west coast only 25 minutes away for the kids and their boogie boards!), hiked up the mini mountain behind us and walked to the next beach and back, swam in the pool I don't know how many times!, visited "the end of the world", and just walked around and explored the area.

Thanks again for letting us into your home. My 7 year old declared that Portuguese people build really great houses!

Incredible Property

  • 5 of 5

This house was a dream come true. The peacefulness of sitting each morning and night by the pool with nothing but the birds singing was incredible. We arrived to Luz with quite a few day trips planned and ended up sitting in the backyard everyday enjoying the solitude of the house. My stay will forever remain one of my most memorable vacations of my life.

Wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week in this wonderful villa. It was a very relaxing week. Since the house is already at age :) it feels very cosy and all you need for a pleasant stay is present. The village is just around the corner with some nice restaurants and shops, as well is the nice beach. Maybe it is possible to have some umbrellas and beachtoys in the house to take to the beach on a beachday?

Special thanks to Amelia for taking care of the beds and the laundry!

Thank you! Polman family, The Netherlands

Owner's Response: Indeed, my parents bought Casa da Figueira in the 1970s and the villa itself was build in the 1960s. It is a traditional Portuguese villa in an ideal location with mature tropical and fruit gardens. We have invested in maintaining it in excellent shape and truly enjoy the "cosy" feel. We love to make it our client's "home away from home". Thank you for your great suggestion regarding having beachtoys available. I know Amelia keeps some in the little area in the back where she does laundry but they are currently not in the main house. Amelia is indeed amazing... with her discrete daily help Casa da Figueira feels like a real hotel where even your laundry is done! So it becomes a real vacation for all family members. Hope you return to Casa da Figuiera again!

We can't wait to return

  • 5 of 5

I highly recommend this villa. It has everyone you need for a perfect vacation. Three bedrooms, a spacious living room, dining room, kitchen, and numerous outdoor spaces to use and enjoy. You can have breakfast on the terrace in front of the house, facing the gardens, lunch by the pool, and dinner off of the kitchen by the orangerie. There are so many places within the villa to explore and enjoy. It was wonderful having the heated pool, but I especially appreciated the amazing gardens, with the circular walkway and numerous succulent plants and flowering perennials. I can't emphasize enough how much I enjoyed the gardens. Any gardener will appreciate them.

I loved the location of the villa because you are in close proximity to town and beach and hiking, yet feel secluded. The town of Luz is less than two minutes' walk. The beach is--I would consider it a minute walk. You can hear the ocean from the villa.

In my opinion, Portugal and the Algarve are underrated as a European destination. Not only would I return to Casa da Figuera again, but I would and will encourage others to seek out this destination as the ideal vacation spot. It has everything--beaches, hiking, wineries, excellent and inexpensive restaurants, golf, history, castles, churches. Renting a car and driving around is easy, but if you want to travel by train or bus, you will find many tourist destinations accessible that way.

Amelia was so kind and helpful. In a very quiet way, she kept the villa clean and did all of our laundry during the week.

There is so much information about sightseeing that you really don't need to bring any guidebooks. We visited Silves, Sagres, Lagos (did a grotto tour with Bom Dia--highly recommend), Porches, and the water park in nearby Lagoa. While we did not venture to Evora or the northern part of Portugal, you could do this with a car and a willingness to drive 2+ hours.

We were a family of four, but I believe several more people could easily stay in the villa (just check to see what the maximum occupancy is).

My only recommendation is that if you are traveling from the U.S. and you want to watch movies, be sure to bring a laptop or iPad because U.S. DVD's don't work on the DVD player at the villa.

I already miss Casa da Figuera and Portugal and hope to return soon.

A wonderful week at Casa da Figueira

  • 5 of 5

Casa de Figueira was exactly what we had hoped for. A beautiful, secluded, and lovingly maintained estate, just minutes from long beaches and high cliffs. We came in March and had sun-filled hours on the terraces, admired the beautiful garden and had long walks on the bluff overlooking the ocean. Casa de Figueira is spacious, impeccably clean (thanks to Amelia), and well furnished. Everything we needed was there. Communication with Sophie and Jesus was easy and straight-forward. We can highly recommend Case de Figueira; it's the perfect place for having some relaxing and memorable vacation days in this most spectacular region of Portugal.

Owner's Response: March is a great month to stay at Casa da Figueira. We also very much enjoy relaxing at Casa da Figueira in the Winter and Early Spring. The Algarve climate is very mild and there are very few tourists so you can have the large beaches all for yourself and there is never any traffic on the roads. A wonderful time to get away from the cold or rainy winter in Northern Europe of North America. And yes, Amelia is totally amazing and keeps Casa da Figueira in perfect condition! Hope you come back!

Great house in a great location!

  • 5 of 5

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful home with us! The house was very tidy and packed with lots of useful information about the area's eateries and activities. We loved that the trail along the beautiful cliffs was right in your back yard...very easy path to find...we hiked to the lighthouse in Lagos and back. The location near the beach is wonderful, as well. Hopefully, we can make it back one day! Thanks again!

Owner's Response: Indeed we have accumulated a lot of information and tips for the clients over the years, many provided by clients themselves. I am happy they were useful for you. You also walked one of our favorite trails starting at Casa da Figueira and walking all the way to Lagos near the shore providing amazing views. You can also walk the same trail to the West instead. In fact the beach/shore trail goes all the way to the West Coast! We have walked most of it. The views are totally amazing. Hopefully you can come back and enjoy the other nature walks.

Beautiful villa in the perfect location

  • 5 of 5

We drove down to the Algarve coast from Lisbon (beautiful drive!) and stayed at Casa de Figueira for a couple if nights. This beautiful villa was the perfect place for our family with plenty of room for our 4 children (ages 9-15) to play and hang out! Loved the gardens, especially the fruit garden with oranges and lemons that we could enjoy. The villa has plenty of space with nice, tall ceilings, TV and wifi, and is tastefully decorated. Conveniently located too, and walking distance to nice restaurants and beach in Praya da Luz. Overall a great and unique experience with memories made for life!

Owner's Response: Dear Eva, thank you for your review. We work hard at keeping Casa da Figueira, our traditional Portuguese villa which has been in our family for over 40 years, in excellent condition. February is indeed one of my favorite times, especially since the organges and lemons are ripe and you can eat them right off the tree! Depending on when you come to Casa da Figuiera there is always some fruit ripe! Hope to host you again! Sophie

Notes:
Amelia, our housekeeper of over 25 years, provides discrete housekeeping services during weekday mornings. She will do your laundry using the washer and dryer on the property. So no need to bring many extra clothes if you plan to stay for many days/weeks. Amelia will help you out.If you appreciate her service please do feel free to leave a tip at the end of your trip. Also, no need to pack a hairdryer, there is one provided for the guests to use in the master bedroom. Finally, the newly-remodeled kitchen has all amenities to cook delicious lunches or dinners with fresh ingredients from the local markets and using the lemons from Casa da Figueira's Orangerie or the herbs growing behind the kitchen. If however, you find any utensils missing, just let us know and we will make it is it available before your next stay. Thank you! We want to make sure Casa da Figueira is your 'Home Away from Home' as one of our guests called it recently. Thank you, Sophie and Jesus
