About the property

Casa da Figueira: Private Villa with Pool, 3 Bedrooms, 3 Baths (Sleeps 8)

Casa da Figueira is a beautiful traditional Portuguese villa with a large private heated pool, gorgeous mature tropical gardens, and a private fruit garden. Discrete housekeeping services are provided during weekdays. Casa da Figueira is only a 5 min easy walk from a beautiful large sandy beach, a lovely village, excellent restaurants, and several cliffs with nature trails for hiking or biking. It is also located within an hour drive from 15 wineries and over 40 golf courses. Portugal has been named Europe's 'Best Golf Destination' for 2014. It is truly your private paradise!

Casa da Figueira is the perfect vacation resort for a relaxing holiday. A fantastic location for a private honeymoon, a group of friends, or for a family get together. There is plenty of room for children to play and adults to relax and enjoy the pool, garden and orangerie. With 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms the villa can accommodate up to eight adults.

Casa da Figueira has nicely decorated living and dining rooms, a fully equipped newly remodeled kitchen, free wireless internet and local phone calls, satellite TV, DVD, air-conditioning, fireplace, and two covered terraces that provide shade and excellent locations for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Two French doors open from the dining & living rooms to one of the covered terraces and walled-in private pool area which is only for you, your family or friends to enjoy. The pool is 1m deep on the shallow end and 2m 20cm on the deep end. It is over 10 meters long and 5.6 meters wide. The pool can be heated for an extra weekly fee. This might be needed in spring and fall. In the hot summer months the pool stays warm from the sunshine alone. Lazy pool chairs are available for your enjoyment. The front door opens to a covered terrace ideal for breakfast in the sun, connected to a large private courtyard where your children can play all kinds of ball sports. A winding pathway enters a lush enclosed tropical garden and the orangerie with fruit trees such as lemons, mandarins and oranges which are ripe in the winter.

The fig tree, which has delicious ripe fruit in the summer, gave the house it's name: Casa Figueira. It stands in the middle of the large yard surrounded by palm trees and an olive tree. The yard is completely surrounded by a tall beautiful white wall with gates that can be locked. This makes it an ideal location to bring little children who'll have plenty of secure room to play.

The newly renovated kitchen with plenty of counter top space has everything you need to prepare delicious dinners and clean up afterwards. The kitchen opens to a smaller courtyard with build-in barbeque. Behind the courtyard is the Orangerie with lemon, orange, clementine, and pear trees. You are welcome to enjoy the fruit when it is ripe. In addition we plant an annual herb garden with a wide variety of herbs that the clients are also welcome to use when cooking.

From the front courtyard a 70 meters private walkway brings the guests to a very quite cobblestone road. Walk this secure Parque da Praia narrow road for 250 meters (just a couple minutes) and you'll arrive at the lovely large sandy beach.

Casa da Figueira inside: The living room is connected to the dining room and has a brand new fireplace that you are welcome to use. Two French doors open from the dining and living rooms to the covered terrace and private pool area. The front door opens to another covered terrace linked to a large courtyard with a pathway to a lush enclosed tropical garden.

There are three bedrooms in Casa Figueira that can accommodate up to 8 adults. The master bedroom has a new king size bed (180cm x 200cm), a large wardrobe and dresser as well as an antique desk. The master bedroom connects into a beautifully renovated private bathroom with a large two-person bathtub and Portuguese sink. A second large bedroom has a traditional and comfortable double bed as well as a twin-size bed and a large build-in wardrobe. A sunny third bedroom has three twin-size beds and a large build-in wardrobe. It also has a new private sink. This is an ideal room for a family with many children. In addition to the master bathroom, there are two other bathrooms in the hallway, one with a full bath, one with a shower.

Casa da Figueira opens to a covered terrace, connected to a large private courtyard where your children can play all kinds of ball sports. A winding pathway enters a lush enclosed tropical garden with a variety of trees and flowers. The fig tree, with delicious fruit in late July and August, which gave the house its name: Casa Figueira. It stands in the middle of the large yard surrounded by palm trees, an olive tree and many other tropical plants. The yard is completely surrounded by a tall beautiful white wall with gates that can be locked. This makes it an ideal location to bring little children who'll have plenty of secure room to play.

The kitchen door opens to a second courtyard with a build-in open fire barbecue pit. Charcoal can be bought at the local Baptista grocery store. Behind the courtyard is the Orangerie with lemon, orange, clementine, and pear trees. The guests are welcome to enjoy the fruit when it is ripe. In addition we planted a small herb garden with a wide variety of herbs that the clients are also welcome to use when cooking.

On weekdays Amelia, our amazing housekeeper of over 20 years, provides exceptional daily housekeeping services. Towels are changed twice/week and linen once a week. Amelia makes you feel welcome and immediately at home and can help you with your laundry. Amelia will be able to provide friendly help and assistance as needed.Feel free to leave her a tip if happy with her services.

The pool is cleaned once a week on Wednesdays, the yard is taken care of once/week on Thursday.

There are plenty of opportunities to dine in Praia da Luz. Our favorite restaurant is called Onda Luz Restaurant and is located right when you enter the village of Luz and walking distance from Casa da Figueira. It looks plain and simple from the outside, but the food is just delicious and the service great. Ask for cataplana. Near the beach in Praia da Luz, also walking distance, try out the renovated 16th century Fortaleza or try one of the many small fish restaurants adjacent to Praia da Luz church. There is also a good Indian restaurant, Pasmina, next to the church. The Dolphin Restaurant, also walking distance from Casa da Figueira, is a fairly new South African restaurant in Praia da Luz that serves several very interesting and tasteful dishes. The atmosphere is also nice. The Papagaio in nearby Espiche (5 min drive) where you can eat as much as you want with a variety of 7 meats baked right at your table on a hot stone is also nice; they have fado (music) some nights.

There are also plenty of opportunity to explore the area. Here are a few half or full-day trips that I recommend. Walking or biking west of Praia da Luz on the nature trail adjacent to the cliffs gets you to Burgau, a working fishing village, and Salema with a beautiful beach. You can also make the scenic 2.5 hour hike from Casa da Figueira to Lagos.

Another half day trip is driving West of Praia da Luz towards the “End of the World”. About 30 km past Praia da Luz you reach Sagres with its Fortaleza which School of Vasco da Gama from where the Portuguese discovered half the world. A couple miles past the Sagres Fortaleza is Cape St Vincent which is the most westerly tip of Europe, called the “End of the world”. The coastline running North from Cape St Vincent is undeveloped and wildly beautiful. It faces onto the open ocean with nothing but the Azores between here and the East Coast of the United States.

The Algarve was recently selected by the German golf magazine as the best place in Europe to play Golf. The Algarve is a highly regarded year-round golfing destination, a true golfer’s paradise. There are over 27 fabulous golf courses in the Algarve with many more under development. Several of them are close to Casa Figueira. The closest one is just up the road (5min drive) called BoaVista at the entrance of Luz.

Exclusive Privacy: Casa da Figueira will be only yours for the week: you will be the only tourists there when you rent it, no-one else is allowed on the secure property except with your permission. We do want to keep the property in exceptional condition year-round. The pool is cleaned once/week on

The best way to get to Casa da Figueira in Luz is to fly to either Lisbon or Faro (airport in the Algarve). Lisbon is a 3 hour drive to Casa da Figueira and Faro is a 1 hour drive to Casa da Figueira. Both journeys are very scenic and on excellent highways. There is also an express bus and as well as a train connection between Lisbon and Faro to Lagos if you prefer to travel without a car. Lagos is a historic town about a 10 min drive from Luz. Once in the villa everything is walking distance: beach, shops (local grocery store delivers at home), restaurants, hiking. Lagos is accessible from Praia da Luz with an easy 20 min Onda bus ride Linha 4. Lagos has a refreshing, relaxing charm with lots of cozy restaurants, many bars, live music, local art shops and an active marina. A daily fresh fish market, weekly vegetable market and monthly flee market provide unique charm to the city. In fact there are many flee markets where you can find great treasures in towns all across the Algarve.

The Algarve also has many award winning wines. About 15 wineries are located within 1 hour drive from Casa da Figueira. Many of the wineries provide wine making tours and/or wine tasting opportunities. North of the Algarve is Aljentejo, a region with many internationally known wines. Although it is about a 1.5 to 2hr drive to visit the wineries in Aljentejo, it is definitely worth a trip.

I am looking forward to help you make your holiday at Casa Figueira as wonderful and memorable as possible. We hope you enjoy your stay at Casa da Figueira!

About Sophie Vandebroek & Jesus del Alamo

We were both born in Europe and now live in Boston, MA. Jesus teaches at MIT and Sophie does research for a technology company. We have 6 grown-up children. My parents bought Casa da Figueira when I was a teenager. Casa da Figueira is a beautiful traditional Portuguese villa that has been in our family for 4 decades. We do yearly upgrades and maintenance to keep it in exceptional condition while maintaining the authentic atmosphere. We recently renovated the kitchen and we have renovated the bathrooms, build a beautiful pool, completely surrounded the large property and tropical yard with a traditional white wall so its safe for children to run around. Each January we do significant maintenance so please do let us or Amelia know if something needs to be upgraded. Keeping a traditional Portuguese home in exceptional condition requires on-going maintenance work. Our own six children, now young adults, have enjoyed coming to Casa da Figueira at all ages. We are looking for individuals or families who will enjoy Casa da Figueira as much as we do and who can help cover the costs of maintaining this beautiful exclusive property and keeping Amelia, our truly amazing housekeeper who has worked for my family for over 25 years, employed. We are very much looking forward to hear from you. A comprehensive folder with information about Casa da Figueira, Praia da Luz and the Algarve is available for your use. Please do add your personal comments and suggestions so our other clients can benefit from your experience.

We hope you will enjoy Casa da Figueira as much as we do. Looking forward to hear from you!

Why Sophie Vandebroek & Jesus del Alamo chose Lagos region

Casa da Figueira, a traditional Portuguese villa with heated private pool and tropical gardens is paradise for us. The location is perfect: Lisbon is a 3 hour highway drive and Faro is a 1 hour highway drive to Casa Figueira. Casa Figueira is extremely closely located to the safe and large sandy beach in Parque da Praia, the beach park. In fact, you can hear the waves while enjoying breakfast outside. The 70 meter walkway gets you to a little cobble stone street that is one block from the eastern side of the beach. The Algarve has 40 fabulous golf courses, with the Boa Vista Course just 5 min from Casa da Figueira and 15 wineries. The villa is also one block from a nature trail that goes up the cliffs and is ideal for jogging, walking, biking or to witness amazing sunsets. The eastern limit of the beach of Luz is marked by the famous “black rock” noticeable since all the other cliffs are golden orange. Praia da Luz retains the charm and character of a traditional Portuguese village yet offers excellent facilities to complement the broad, safe, sandy beach. The narrow village streets meander up from the beach, past white-washed houses, an 16th century Fortaleza turned into a romantic restaurant and pretty yellow church offering many different religious services, to the village center with many restaurants, grocery stores, and a few pottery stores. The Algarve’s long Moorish control, its Mediterranean climate, and its abundance of fine sandy beaches endow the Algarve with a unique character. Separated from the rest of Portugal by rolling hills, Algarve, the southernmost province, with its abundance of sun, sardines and tuna, is an ideal vacation location. The closest city to Praia da Luz is Lagos. While Lagos is a very historic town, it has a refreshing, relaxing charm with lots of cozy restaurants, many bars, live music, local art shops and an active marina. A daily fresh fish market, weekly vegetable market and monthly flee market provide unique charm to the town.

What makes this villa unique

To answer this question, here is great feedback we received from one of our recent clients: 'We had such an incredible time. Your villa is charming, and obviously taken care of with a lot of love and attention. Amelia was wonderful, very helpful, and very patient with our questions. We walked everywhere, took tons of pictures, the views were stunning, and ate at pretty much all the places you mentioned. My husband went diving in Lagos, and all the guys went golfing up the road. We found the cork shop at the other end of the village, and we got used to orange egg yolks. We checked out all of Luz. We found the bakery and the soup shop. Quejadas were declared our breakfast food. We took a ride down to the fort in Sagres, and spent a day in Tavira exploring. That was an incredible crash course in history. We took plenty of pictures of the bridges, fort and churches. We climbed the mini mountain behind Casa da Figueira and walked all the way around it. That was more than enough exercise for me, but would not have missed it because the views and changing colors were perfect. By mid week, the guys were checking out the 'for sale' signs and comparing prices. We met all kinds of people, who were very kind. Needless to say we are not an overly quiet group, animated conversation being the norm, so at all the restaurants we went to, the owners came over and talked with us. Lots of stories were shared, and lots of advice was given. We were very surprised to find the beach being dog friendly which was great. We also had a person at the beach who made sand sculptures every day. There are so many other things we experienced on this trip that I am sure I am forgetting. In short, I have never had such a relaxing and thoroughly enjoyable vacation in my life. We all had a wonderful time and would consider doing it again.' - Janie, Ed & Travis Gschrey, New York State, USA Also very unique are Casa da FIgueira's tropical gardens and many mature fruit trees (for you to enjoy).

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi Sophie, we have had a wonderful time! We are leaving in the morning and are so sad to go! This has been such a nice vacation. We haven't done a real vacation in a very long time. We have done many travel destinations to see cities, but this has been a great relaxing trip! It helps when Amelia somehow secretly does the dishes when you are not looking! :) We have been to three different beaches (found some good surf on the west coast only 25 minutes away for the kids and their boogie boards!), hiked up the mini mountain behind us and walked to the next beach and back, swam in the pool I don't know how many times!, visited "the end of the world", and just walked around and explored the area.

Thanks again for letting us into your home. My 7 year old declared that Portuguese people build really great houses!

Beautiful and peaceful retreat!

  • 5 of 5

This is an amazing property - it is even more beautiful and peaceful than the pictures can show and the words describe. Despite being in very close proximity to the beach and the waterfront of Luz, we had a complete sense of privacy and peace whether in the house, enjoying the garden, or relaxing by/in the pool.

The property is exceptionally well maintained and well equipped. The kitchen had everything needed for our family of 6 and the bedrooms were very comfortable. The house is beautifully decorated. We spent the majority of our time poolside where there are ample chaise lounges and a wonderful table under a roof to provide shade.

Sophie is a very warm, responsive and accommodating owner. Amelia the caretaker is described by others as an angel, and she truly is - she is on the property on weekdays in the morning, but is very discrete. She keeps the house immaculate and did our laundry each day - a wonderful and unexpected perk. She will answer any question with patience and kindness.

The town of Luz is a wonderful little beach town with a number of excellent restaurants - our favorite was Chiccas, but Ondaluz and Yolo were close behind. Chiccas does not take reservations but the others do, and it is best to call ahead as they were often fully booked. The local grocery store - Baptista - was a pleasant walk from the house and well equipped. We also used the Intermarche in Lagos.

We were able to easily explore all of the Algarve from Luz. The cliff walk right from the house to Lagos described by Sophie was wonderful and we recommend climbing the cliff at the beginning of that hike for a beautiful view of the sunset.

It was a wonderfully relaxing and rejuvenating week - we hope to return.

Fantastic we loved it.

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful family vacation at this property. We celebrated a special birthday and one of our children was engaged on that beautiful beach, in that wonderful setting.

We can't say enough good things. The Villa was everything that we could ask for. The 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms allowed all of us our privacy.

We all enjoyed the pool and we all would love to go back again.

All the Best, Paula and Ray Fernandes and Family

Owner's Response: Thanks John, the location is excellent indeed, just a 2 min walk from the beach and a few more min from the town that has several nice restaurants. In addition the walking trail starts right behind the Parque da Praia ("park of the beach") in which Casa da Figueira is located. Hope you and your family will vacation at Casa da Figueira again.

Superb relaxing stay in a fabulous corner of Luz

  • 4 of 5

Holidayed as a family of four and although we are familiar with Luz, this was our first time staying so close to the beach and centre. The villa was lovely - amazingly calm and peaceful as others have noted, despite it being surrounded by other properties - you really do get a sense that you're on your own. The grounds are beautiful, and the pool and sun terrace are perfectly aligned to give you the sun all day. No awkward shadow patches at the end of the day here! The pool is quite deep (2m and goes deep quickly) but this was fine for us, having older kids anyway and enabled us to muck about diving for rings. Beds were comfy (not a given in other villas I can assure you) and the villa was clean and tidy.

Location-wise it is hard to beat. Less than 5 minutes walk to the beach and a similar amount to the beach-front of Luz itself with its eclectic selection of restaurants, cafes and bars. The proximity to the beach means you can reach it without having to take bag loads of stuff with you - once you've had your dip just pop back home.

Amelia was fabulous for us - discrete, cheerful and helpful: having your washing done for you is superb bonus and adds to the sense of relaxation.

Getting to the villa was fine although we had the slight advantage of being previous visitors to the area. My recommendation is to make use of the detailed directions and maps Sophie provides and 'walk the route' using Google Maps Streetview before you come. On streetview you can go right up to the garages so it's well worth doing to get acclimatised. We arrived at night so I was glad I'd done that homework! All the joining instructions worked as expected.

For the area itself you really have to do the walk to Lagos along the cliffs - that starts right behind this villa so no excuse really. We also enjoyed the little seaside village of Salema this year for the first time. In Luz itself, because of our proximity to the beach, we had a go on the pedaloes and on the ocean kayaks - great fun. Food wise, we also enjoyed meals at Chicca's and Onda Luz but our top pick remains A Fabrica (which is pretty much the first restaurant you come to when walking into town from the villa). We also discovered a fantastic array of sweet and savoury crepes (or pancakes as us Brits would call them) in the Cafetaria Bombordo diagonally opposite A Fabrica which became our staple breakfast towards the end!

A recommended spot to make the most out of this lovely area of Portugal and Luz.

Great place for a family vacation in Southern Portugal (4.5 stars)

  • 4 of 5

The house is nicely appointed and has lots of space for a family of four or more. Would absolutely stay there again when we visit next. Air conditioning worked well (not always the case in the area). Kitchen has what you need and local grocery stores deliver. Fresh lemons from the orchard were a bonus. The owners' suggestions for restaurants/places to visit are very good ones. The pool and backyard are really the highlights and are very private and a fantastic way to spend a lazy day hanging out as a family. Not the easiest place to find but once you get there its very easy to relax. The owners' were very responsive and accommodating with even minor problems and questions. Some issues with a fuse box were a relatively minor brief annoyance but quickly dealt with. The housekeeper was a nice touch as well...who really wants to do laundry on vacation?! The location is great for the beach and reasonably easy to get to anything you would want to go to in the area.

With 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms the house can accommodate up to eight adults.

Other Activities: What is really nice about Casa da Figueira is that you could easily spend all your vacation time on the property enjoying the large heated pool, the mature tropical gardens with plenty of flowers and trees, the orangerie with lots of fruit, the BBQ area or the front porch. It is truly a private oasis once you enter the gate from the enclosed covered garage into the property.

Once you exit the property you are on Praia da Luz, which used to be a fisherman village.

A lot of historic sites, wineries and golf courses are within 30 min drive. Enjoy!
