About Peggy Binzel

Love urban life; also, love the isolated beach with amazing wildlife. Scotland is a welcome retreat from hectic city life.

Why Peggy Binzel chose Chesapeake Bay

Scotland is a rare find. Rarely do you find an area that begins with beautiful forests and opens up onto fabulous beaches. Little traffic but only 2 hours from Washington or Baltimore. I discovered a jewel.

What makes this cottage unique

Sunrise over the Bay with morning coffee is heavenly. Walks on the beach. Take a 30 minute kayak ride or a 5 hours one - very convenient out the front door. Enjoy a tasting of good quality local wines at beautiful Woodlawn plantation just 10 miles away.

A wonderful little getaway

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I really enjoyed our vacation. Though the house isn't right on the beach it's only a few feet away. Our stay was very peaceful and the house was perfect!! The only thing that I didnt like was the family that stayed in the main house on the Sunday we were therez helped themselves to our stuff. When my husband and I wanted to ride the bikes, mine was gone. When we wanted to go kayaking, they had take our oars. It was rather annoying. I know that has nothing to do with the owners nontheless it annoyed us. But you can't control who ends up renting the place next to you. The cottage is lovely and we plan to go back :)

Owner's Response: We are delighted that those guests enjoyed their vacation. It's a beautiful setting. nestled in the woods but steps from the beach. We are so sorry that other guests borrowed what was not theirs and deprived these guests of a bicycle and oars. Most guests are very respectful, but in the rare instance when some are not, we invite our guests who are missing items to contact the property managers. They can either retrieve the missing bicycles, oars, etc. or bring you spare ones. None of our guests should go without what they are promised.

Super Cute Cottage

  • 5 of 5

The Cottage is a very cute beach house. When I arrived the walkway had a little garden which was nice. The house was clean, very well appointed with things you may need like shampoo and towels, and the beach was very relaxing to have a walk on after a long day. The owner has books and magazines there for beach reading and the bed was very comfortable. And the birds are a treat to watch and I found some beach glass to take home with me. I will be back in the future for a longer stay.

Needs TLC

  • 2 of 5

First off, I need to relay that I have used home away at least 2-3 times a year over the last 5 years. I have never left a negative review. When my wife and I arrived it was almost dark but thankfully google brought us right to the front door. Our initial impression was that there was a musty odor. We actually bought a candle the next day to mask the smell. I'm sure it was partly due to the fireplace, but more due to the overall cleanliness of the cottage. The cottage was in bad need of a spring cleaning. The floor is cement and is cold and grimy, like it hasn't been mopped in awhile. There are cobwebs on the column, in the bathroom, the kitchen, and elsewhere. There is dust everywhere, especially the glass dinner table. The bathroom fan is coated with dust and needs to be cleaned. All of the drains are slow draining and definitely in need of some bend clean outs. We couldn't touch any of the dishes in the kitchen without washing them first, since they were all full of a film. The greenhouse is devoid of greenery. I would suggest the owners actually plant something and put it on an irrigation system, so that some plants could actually be sustained with minimal intervention. There are fresh herbs planted in the landscaping (which is very nice), I'm just saying you should elevate the experience. The bikes should be removed as an amenity unless you plan on providing bikes that people would actually want to ride. I understand they are kept outside but maybe some thought should be put towards more suitable storage like a bike shed. The kitchen is sparse on any staples so make sure you bring everything you need to prepare meals. It was my wife's birthday weekend and we were excited to go away but we left a day early because the space doesn't have anywhere comfortable to hang inside during bad or cold weather. Board games or cards would be a welcome amenity.

Owner's Response: We appreciate all of our guests' reviews incorporate their suggestions as much as possible. We love this little cottage and years of great guests reviews show that others do, too. We regret that these guests had unexpectedly cold, rainy weather; that colors everything. When it rains for long periods, a mild fireplace-like smell can occur in the house. The floor is concrete - a very cool, acid-stained concrete - but barefoot on a concrete floor when it's cold and damp will never feel great. We have all of our houses professionally cleaned between each rental. As the owner, I saw no evidence of dust or cobwebs when I inspected the house in early May. But, if a guest's perception is not good, then we will re-double our efforts with the cleaning crew as we want every guest experience to be wonderful, even when the weather does not cooperate. We would LOVE to have the greenhouse fully stocked with plants. We have tried in the past and have found it nearly impossible to keep the plants alive during guest stays since some people are interested only in the beach, fishing or other activities and don't want to be burdened with taking care of plants - and we don't want to interrupt our guests' stays with plant care. We will think, again, about whether there is a cost-effective, efficient way to have the greenhouse stocked with plants. Our bicycles are on a regular rotation and they are serviced frequently. But, we'll redouble our efforts here, too, making sure that the bikes are in good shape. If guests ever find them not in repair, our properties managers are local and can be contacted for repair or replacement. We also provide 2 kayaks free-of-charge with the rental. Board games are a good idea. As to the kitchen, we really can't keep food staples in the kitchen. We keep it well-stock with cooking utensils, pots and pans, etc, though. We also provide towels, sheets, soaps, dishwasher soap, paper towels and many more amenities than most rental houses. We can provide more even more amenities, but doing so comes at a cost. The rate for this house is very reasonable. We could certainly raise the rate and offer more. It's a good idea to survey our guests to see whether they prefer the current amenities at the current price or would prefer more amenities with a higher rental rate. We will leave a survey at this house asking our guests their views about the trade-off between services and rates and respond accordingly. Thank you for the suggestions.

Relaxing

  • 3 of 5

Cottage was nice and not cluttered with beachy decor. Cosy using the wood burning stove. A few items could do with updating. only 3 breakfast bowls. rusty tin opener and no cleaning liquid and matches. but otherwise good. Tv and internet worked good. Bed very comfortable and good shower. Disappointed with the garden as not been cleaned up. furniture not clean and tipped over. Rusty BBQ could not use. Beach area nice and sandy but only a small area.We thought we would be able to walk along the beach for a walk but it was sectioned off to go with each property.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the suggestions and for letting us know what is not quite perfect. We've re-stocked the dinnerware - apologies, we didn't realize some had gone missing. Now that spring is here, we have been able to get the garden in better shape. Still some work to be done but we're getting it there (if the rain will stop)! Also, with the arrival of spring, we are replacing the outdoor grills; they don't survive winter very well. Thank you again for taking the time to help us make all our guests' stays better.

Enjoyed our time

  • 5 of 5

We loved Sumerlee Cottage! It was a perfect weekend getaway for my husband and I. The cottage was so close to the beach, and we had a ton of privacy. I may have just read the description wrong, but I was not aware that we were so close to the main house on the property. We didn't have any problems with the other house being near, it was just a little bit of a surprise.
