Overview

About the property

Off-grid tranquility in the ruggedly beatiful Woolshed Valley

Reidford Cottage takes its name from the Reidford Hotel which was one of eight Hotels in the Sebastapol area in the late 1880’s during the Gold Rush period. The nearby river crossing to Byrne Gully Road is named after the family of Joe Byrne that lived there. He was a member of bushranger Ned Kelly’s gang . During the 1880’s there was a settlement of approximately 3000 mining for gold in this area.

We have 40 acres of bushland adjacent to the Chiltern/Mt Pilot National Park and the cottage is part of our home property, secluded from the road. Breakfast on your own balcony and be entertained by the birds. The kangaroos, birds and other native animals find safety and peace in their surroundings and are well used to sharing their space with humans. Consequently we have the rare opportunity of watching them rear their young at close quarters.

Our cosy cottage is compact and comfortable. Ideal for a couple or family with up to 2 children. There is a queen size bed and a small bunk room for 2 children, modern bathroom and kitchen. Outside barbecue, TV, indoor and outdoor eating areas.

At Reidford we practice sustainability and are not connected to the electricity grid or reticulated town water. We have a stand alone solar power system and water is provided by dams and rainwater tanks. The cottage is comfortably heated in winter with gas heating, and air conditioned in summer. There are numerous walks on the property and along tracks the adjacent National Park. The tracks in the National Park are great for Mountain Biking. Nearby Reedy Creek is a popular spot for gold panning and gemstone fossicking.

We are 15mins to the fabulous restaurants and shopping of Beechworth or 30 mins to Milawa and the Wine and Food trail. Bike hire is available in Beechworth making this an ideal holiday spot for people who love the outdoors.

We have a small friendly dog which has the run of the property and we would advise guests that they should be comfortable with having a dog around.

OUR DOGS/PETS POLICY As dog owners we enjoy traveling with our dog and welcome guest's dogs; subject to a few reasonable conditions. If fully house trained, small to medium sized dogs are free to go inside the cottage and to sleep on their own bedding. Dogs are not allowed on bedding or furniture. We prefer that very large dogs are accommodated on the enclosed front deck. We do NOT provide a kennelling service and dogs are NOT to be left behind when guests go out. Please advise us of the number and breed of dogs that you wish to bring when inquiring. We also request that guests do not allow their dogs to harass wildlife. Cats must be kept in a cage whilst outside because we have abundant birdlife , and while inside to avoid damage to furniture. We also ask that, before booking, intending guests advise whether they seek to bring exotic pets.

Intending guests should also be sympathetic to the notion of living sustainably.

ACCOMMODATION RATES. Our rates are dependent of bedding and bedroom requirements, so please do not rely on the tariff calculator. The cottage has a Queen bed in the main bedroom and 2 bunks in the 2nd bedroom. Please let us know your requirements at the time of your initial inquiry so that we may confirm the overall tariff for your intended stay.

MINIMUM STAYS Over Christmas/New Year period and Easter break, the minimum stay is 3 nights. At all other times the minimum stay is 2 nights.

Disappointment

  • 1 of 5

The overall location was excellent and the host Wayne was welcoming. However, we were extremely disappointed when we came up the property driveway to discover that the 'cottage' was located within the garden of the adjacent main house, essentially a close by granny flat ..... The 'cottage' looked and felt like a caravan park cabin, extremely small, uncomfortable lounge seating, within the small combined Kitchen, eating and TV/lounge area. Overall the interior was very tired and drab. Come away thoughts ... too expensive for staying in a granny flat in someones backyard.

Owner's Response: We think that guests should carefully read property descriptions before booking....so that they know what they should expect. Our listing does not make claims that the cottage is spacious... nor do we hide the fact that it is located on our home property.......albeit on 40 acres of bushland surrounded by a National Park...hardly a "backyard"! As regards value...we do not charge extra for dogs...which if house trained are free to go inside. Compare that with the nightly cost of kenelling. As to the disparagement of feeling like a caravan park cabin...well, there you WILL have close neighbors....and you won't have your dog with you.

Our son had a great time there running around the garden and playing with the friendly dog. It is the perfect place to unwind from city life.

Cottage is dog friendly but location is not

  • 2 of 5

Hosts very friendly, cottage very quaint, however, although clean the accommodation is in need of some modernisation, position of sofa means you have to look left to watch Tv, no microwave, no oven, 4 berth but only two people can have a soft seat, anyone else has to use a dining chair, not very comfortable. Whilst sitting on the verandah there are no views, with several black tubes protruding form the adjacent lawned area, I feel some landscaping to hide the tubes and to make sitting on the verandah more pleasant. Dog walking is restricted to owners property due being situated in the Victoria National Park which is NOT dog friendly..
