Unusual house in medieval Tuscan hamlet restored by sculptor. 3 night minlet.
Casa Giovanni is a house on two floors, recently renovated, part of a beautiful hamlet with medieval origins restored by a sculptor. It is very private, spacious. Top floor: 2 bedrooms (one large double, one twin or double) bathroom, washroom, . large living room with floor to ceiling glass doors down one side of the room leading to a covered balcony. Ground floor: spacious dining room with a large terrace, kitchen with a shaded terrace - the ‘summer dining room’ – an intimate terrace surrounded by olive trees. Second bathroom on ground floor. You can enter the house on either floor. The view is panoramic, sweeping over the Tuscan hills and valley of Camaiore to the sea beyond. Sunsets are stunning. The house faces south and, in the cooler months, the balcony is a sheltered warm place to sit and enjoy the fantastic view. Casa Giovanni is set in a peaceful, romantic hillside location, yet only 10 minutes from nearest town, 25 minutes from motorway. Shared pool.
The beautiful peaceful hamlet of Peralta has a spectacular setting in the Tuscan hills that rise high above the valley of Camaiore. It was restored with great love and imagination by international sculptor Fiore de Henriquez. She created a place that is quite unique. Peralta was her home up to her death in June 2004, and one can see her work all through the hamlet. Her sculpture everywhere, and the manner in which she restored and designed the hamlet give it very special atmosphere and character. With stunning, panoramic views over the valley to the hills and sea beyond and surrounded by terraces of olive groves, its stone walls covered with purple bougainvilleas, lemon trees, jasmine, Peralta seems like paradise., a place for people seeking tranquility and beauty. There is a swimming pool on an upper terrace with a panoramic view towards the sea. The large terrace in front of Peralta is a lovely place to sit with a glass of wine, enjoy the sunsets and meet other guests.
Lovely walking country with marked trails through the olive groves and hills dense with chestnut trees and known for their wild flowers in spring and autumn. Walks range from 50 minutes to a delightful restaurant in an adjoining village, to three hours up to the peak of the Mount Prana above Peralta. Although secluded, the motorway is only 20 mins away so sightseeing is easy. Shopping in Florence/Lucca/Forte dei Marmi is legendary! Porto Venere & the Cinque Terre are 1 hour away. The sculptor's town of Pietrasanta takes 20 minutes and has many cafes and restaurants. Beaches are 30 mins away. The closest shops (grocer and greengrocer) are just minutes down the hill where there is also a bar/pizza restaurant. The market town of Camaiore takes 10 minutes by car. Peralta offers self catering accommodation sleeping from 2 to 8 and 4 additional bedrooms with bathrooms.
ACCESS: Airports: Pisa 45 mins - Florence 1 hr. Genoa 1 hr.40mins - Bologna 2hrs.
From the A11 and A12 motorway exit, Viareggio/Camaiore, you head for 'Viareggio, Lido di Camaiore'. Then for 'Camaiore'. From Camaiore, there is a little road that leaves the valley and winds its way up the hill to Pieve di Camaiore, then to Agliano, then Peralta. (We give detailed directions).
Note: The last 200 or so yards of our road are very steep and narrow with 2 hairpin bends. A smallish car is recommended, although an Espace & other large cars can make it!! This last bit of road is unsuitable for nervous drivers. The road comes to an end in our carpark. From there you walk to Peralta itself (about 200 yards/meters) and we can help with luggage (9am to 6pm). . Don't be put off by the last piece of road - Peralta more than merits the effort! And if you are in a very large car, you can always park it below the hairpin bends. It is only a short walk up to the carpark from here.

Why Kate or Dinah chose Camaiore
International sculptor Fiore de Henriquez was living in the area of Camaiore from the 1960's due to its proximity to the Carrara marble quarries and the bronze foundries of nearby Pietrasanta. In the 1970's she found the small hamlet of Peralta, perched on the hillside above Camaiore. It was remote, served only by a footpath, and the buildings were mainly in ruins - their inhabitants having left in the mid 1950's due to the hard living in the hills. No water nor electricity at this time. Fiore fell in love with the hamlet and managed to gradually buy the various houses. She then set about restoring them and the hamlet and created the very unique place that exists today. She died in 2004 and the hamlet was then taken over by a very good friend of her's who is the current owner. . Repairs and renovations are undertaken where necessary, but the essential essence of the hamlet remains the same as when Fiore was alive. It is the home of her archive and sculptures, which can be seen throughout the grounds and in the various accommodation, of which Casa Giovanni is one.
What makes this House unique
It is hard to describe the absolute charm and beauty of Peralta and why I am so passionate about it. I now own it and am as much in love with it as Fiore before me. Every corner has its surprises, small details to delight the eye. The wisterias and bougainvilleas offer vibrant colour and essential shade. The views are wonderful, changing with the light, with the weather, with the season. Sunsets are magic. Early morning mist lying in the valley. The sight of Corsica on a clear day. The large bronze sculpture of 'The Phoenix' on the main terrace about to fly off over the valley. Fiore used to say it signifies 'Peralta rising from the ashes'. The many sculptures Fiore left for visitors to enjoy on the terraces. Her private gallery which I love to show to guests and one evening a week, at aperitivo time, I invite any guests staying at Peralta to a viewing of the gallery and Fiore's original house I hope many visitors will find their way to Peralta and enjoy it as much I do ......... possibly even fall in love with it! We stayed in this beautiful villa last year and the place was immaculate
We sampled the "on site" cooking and her food was delicious - both the pre cooked meals in our villa and the communal dinner we attended with the other guests
Everyone was so helpful - particularly Holly who really made our stay so enjoyable as did Dinah
We enjoyed the "trust" bar facilities that we used every evening before venturing out to the beautiful towns of camaiore and Pietrasanta - where one will find good retaurants and places of interest
Best place to eat though was Marco's pizza restaurant at the bottom of the hill from the villa - tasty, friendly and a lift up the winding steep road after our pizzas
I would return here anytime as it is up to yourself to make your ideal holiday from an ideal base - we enjoyed day trips to the beach at Fortie De Marmi and visited Lucca and Florence too
Not that it is a negative but the access road to the villa is very narrow and has a few steep inclines and hairpin bends but take your time and once you reach the villa for the first time the welcome and views are all well worth it
Must not forget Dinahs wee dog who will meet and greet you most mornings
The small swimming pool is adequate and situated even higher up the hill behind the complex
Although it is nearly a year since we were there I just had to add my review as the place is amazing
It gives us enormous pleasure to read this review and to know that our guests appreciated Peralta so much. It is a very unique and beautiful place and I am lucky to live there - (and my little dog Elly continues to charm our visitors!!) Dinah
Sensational Setting, Tranquil Tuscany
What can we say except WOW!!! What a beautiful part of the world. My husband, two boys and I loved the setting, relaxation, tranquility, sunsets and the views beyond. The long winding path leads you to the hamlet of Peralta, dotted with various sculptures, stone pathways and gorgeous gardens. An amazing find that will be etched into our memories forever. Accomodation spacious, warm and welcoming with many options of various sitting areas depending on your mood. For us was the top balcony with beautiful views during the day and night, the twinkling of lights below and the fire flies. My boys loved the pool with more views, including the tower, and of course the beautiful resident dog, Ellie (how lucky is she!!). Peralta is a definite must. We had 5 nights but wanted more. A big thank you to Kate, John and Dinah. Great communication prior to arriving and warm, welcoming and helpful throughout our stay. We will definitely return someday!!!!

A beautiful, tranquil retreat in the Tuscan Hills
We were returning to this beautiful place after 15 years away, this time armed with two small children, one of which we named after the nearby town of Lucca. We absolutely love it here, a lovely hamlet of buildings known as Peralta, set in the rolling Tuscan hills, surrounded by olive groves and lemon trees. Dinah and Kate are delightful, friendly hosts and made us feel very welcome. The property was spacious, with fabulous views from the various balconies and terraces all along the front, where we supped delicious, home made Limonchello most evenings, whilst looking out at the setting sun and the glinting fireflies that lit up the trees like fairy lights! The kids fell in love with the Dinah's lovely little dog Ellie and spent many an hour throwing sticks with her, taking her for walks and playing in the olive groves around the house. We had real wood BBQ's on three of the nights as the weather was perfect - warm and sunny, not too hot. Peralta is lovely, unique and has bags of character, with all the lovely sculptures scattered around the property, the legacy left by Fiore. My partner Emma will be bringing back her girlfriends for a girls only weekend - now that is not fair! We will definitely be back, our kids loved every minute of their stay, best wishes to Dinah, Laura, Kate and her new baby! Steve, Emma, Isaac and Lucca xx

The essence of Italy
I have over the last ten years been visiting Peralta on a regular basis together with my wife, children, and extended family in different combinations and at different seasons with different weather conditions. I love this place: a small hamlet almost on top of the mountain overlooking a lush valley with the sea at the end, where the sun sets. The view is spectacular. The stony houses are beautifully restored with due respect to local tradition. The place has this special atmosphere given to it by all the artwork made by Peralta’s founder, the sculptress Fiore de Henriquez. It is a place for relaxation, reflection, thought, and creativity. It is a good place for hiking, and then you finish with a dip in the pool looking down at the Mediterranean. Or you drive down to the Lido for a swim, or perhaps to play some tennis. Peralta has a certain exclusivity to it, and the car ride up here contributes to this, because it is a steep and winding road, which makes the trip up here a little bit of a challenge, it is like climbing slow and easy. I have made the trip many many times without problems whatsoever in my absolutely not four-wheel-drive clumsy-and-big Ford Mondeo estate. The ride should be approached as part of the Peralta experience, the reward is a drink in the bar after arriving the first time – a blissful moment of everything that Italy is to me: not an easy place, but a place of paradoxes and layers and layers of history. Peralta is the essence of Italy, a remote place in the middle of civilization.
Best wishes to Peralta and all its many guests from Niels Peter Hahnemann, Copenhagen, May 2013.
Casa Giovanni is situated on the lower slopes of the Alpi Apuane (national park), the mountains that rise high above the valley of Camaiore which is behind Viareggio and Forte dei Marmi on the coast (20/30 minutes by car). We are ten minutes by car from the market town of Camaiore and about 20/25 minutes from the nearest motorway exit, making sightseeing easy. The beautiful walled town of Lucca is only 22 km (35 minutes), Pisa is 35 km (45 mins). The marble quarries of Carrara are within easy reach, and the town of Pietrasanta, famed as being the centre for sculptors who come to cast their work from all over the world, is only about 15 minutes from Camaiore. The Cinque Terre (one hour away) - one can drive to La Spezia or Porto Venere and visit them by boat - the ferry service is frequent.. We are one and a half hours from Florence, 2 hours.from Sienna. We are Ideally situated for the Puccini Festival (40 minutes away), the open air opera festival in Torre del Lago. Other Activities: A wonderful place to spend the Christmas and New Year break. Fireworks all over the valley on New Year's Eve - Casa Giovanni has best view of it all!
