Views, garden, peaceful ambience, spa bath, Wi-Fi and local calls a place to relax and enjoy northern Tasmania!!

We fell in love with Gorge Cottage at first sight. Her original features and warmth charmed us. The location was perfect - close to the magnificent Cataract gorge and overlooking the Tamar River and Launceston. The popular Trevallyn Grocer and Cafe is only a few doors down, where an array of gourmet products is on offer and you can also enjoy a delicious breakfast or lunch. (There is also a post office, newsagent, doctor's surgery and bakery)

Her Art Deco leadlight windows and doors, baltic floors and fireplaces provided a great foundation to work with in our renovations. Our objective was to create a warm, comfortable and aesthetically beautiful environment which would invite our guests to relax and have a memorable stay.

Gorge Cottage has three bedrooms(two queen, one bunk with double on bottom, single on top) sleeping up to 7 with plenty of living space and would be perfect for honeymooners, couples, group of friends or families. The house is welcoming and makes a great base for exploring the surrounding areas.

The configuration of the house starts with a lovely enclosed veranda where you can sit and enjoy your morning cuppa whilst watching the mist over the river with the stunning background of the hills beyond. In the evening the scenery is transformed into a sparkling christmas tree of lights. The formal lounge with its electric flame heater is so cosy and romantic, it invites you to curl up on the couch. The family room is beautifully set up to watch the T.V., listen to music or just relax with a glass of local red with its own electric flame effect fire. We have available a great range of CD's and DVD's for your enjoyment. Local calls and internet (NBN) with wi-fi are included.

The dining room has a large table, perfect for gathering around and next to the large gourmet kitchen, which is fitted with stainless steel appliances including full size SS Fridge and everything you need to cook up a storm.

The first and second bedrooms have queen size beds and fireplaces (not used) and the third bedroom has a bunk with double and single bed. There are cupboards in all the bedrooms. Quality linen and Egyptian cotton towels are provided for your enjoyment and comfort.

The study has a computer desk and great vista.

The bathroom is well appointed with a spa bath to relax in. The toilet is in a separate powder room and the laundry is fully equipped.

Importantly for Trevallyn, we believe we have achieved a great combination of heating and cooling recognising that everything has to be electric! In addition to the two electric fires which of course give off local heat (2 to 3 Kws) in the family room there is a very large ceiling air-conditioner and a seperate air circulating system. The latter circulates air throughout the house from the family room and in the colder times also takes any heat available from the roof space. The concept is to provide a means of climate control throughout the house. In addition, for heating there are panel heaters in various positions for additional heat if preferred on a room by room basis. In early 2018 we have installed ceiling fans in both the front veranda and study area to provide additional cooling on those occasional very hot days in these fully glassed areas. There is a natural draught of course also available from the windows, as the house is on a hill.

The large back yard is delightful with a big deck and gazebo overlooking the various trees, including a large lemon tree and a small herb garden, which you are welcome to help yourself to. There is a full outdoor setting, patio heater and a BBQ for your convenience.

We hope that you will enjoy your stay at Gorge Cottage as much as we have creating her.

About Walter Dewe

With four children and pursuing an international career in the energy industry, we came to Australia in 1984! Fell in love with Tasmania some years later and bought the house as a potential home "down the track".

It is now something that is closer and closer to something that can be done! Hence the love for the house, the constant attention and improvements made are part of that. Living in Melbourne with wonderful managers Anita and Todd (a short 15 minutes away) the joy of giving others an opportunity to enjoy the house is immense. Two AirBnb's in Melbourne have been another part of engaging with visitors and offering something special in hospitality, which is relished. Hiking, travelling and learning about other cultures, new experiences are a passion! With grandchildren in Melbourne and London now it is a very special time of life. Snow skiing , although in abeyance for a while, has been a personal activity love!

The purpose at the Gorge Cottage is to provide an experience for guests that they feel is special and is more like a home from home! The guest book and the reviews are there for everyone and we truly welcome feedback and suggestions for enhancing that experience.

We are currently planning to posiiton a small car at the house for use of guests, althought we have yet to finalise how to set up the commercial and access arrangements. However if you want to check on this please call as it is an evolving process!

Above all enjoy and relish the house and its character and never hesitate to contact us if there are any questions, special needs.

Why Walter Dewe chose Launceston

It really is a home from home, in a beautiful location and all it has to offer. The neighbours and others in Tasmania are so much more interested in assisting, being friendly and recognising the value of others than in many other places.

The proximity of so much, the always changing vistas when one drives on the island, the diversity of nature and the relaxing nature of the island state is an absolute joy.

We have endeavoured to equip the property with everything you might need, including two portacots, high chair, hair drier, some basic supplies in the pantry and fridge, as much information as possible so you do not have to look far for " where to go to dinner" ,"operating the internet", "where to call for assistance-us!"

This house has enormous character from a bygone era and gives a genuine peaceful feel on entering.

What makes this house unique

Well, these have been really covered in the above!!!

A wonderful home away from home.

  • 5 of 5

The Gorge cottage has character and charm and all the comforts and conveniences of home. There is plenty of space for the family to spread out and a yard to enjoy. It was clean and comfortable. We had our 13, 12 and 10 year olds and it was a great place to stay for kids. Great communication from the owners too.

Great location, everything we needed

  • 5 of 5

After a long day trip on the ferry then the drive from Devonport, we would have slept anywhere but we were instead delighted when we arrived at the Gorge Cottage. Plenty of room, great view, location, nearby amenities and very well equipped. Very happy to have stayed here. Very comfortable for a family of 4 with a bedroom to spare.

Excellent cottage !

  • 5 of 5

We , a family of 4 , thoroughly enjoyed our 2 night stay at Gorge cottage . Next time we would stay a week. The beds were very comfortable, comparable to a 5 star hotel bed. The kitchen was very well equipped with sharp knifes, condiments and coffee machine. There's even a study for us to setup our laptop and internet access for quick lookup for restaurants, places to visit etc. It's really a very well equipped and tastefully furnished cottage with views over the river.

Everything you need for a holiday with family and friends. Walter is very efficient in responding to any queries. The pantry is stocked with all those things you never have when you're cooking on holiday. Lovely vibè in the house and stunning views over Launceston. Fabulously close to the local shops and cafe. Gorge Cottage is suitable for either a winter or summer stay. I really appreciated the Wi-Fi, printer and smart tv too. Thanks, and I hope to stay there again.
