My husband and I are originally from Holland and moved to New York City in '96. This loft was our very first home in the city and we have been in this building ever since. We got married in New York and hosted our wedding party in this loft. We still live happily in the building on the top 4th floor together with our three young children.
Harriette van den Hoek purchased this apartment in 1996
After seeing numerous apartment all across the city, we instantly knew that we had found something special when we walked into this place. We found it through an ad in the New York Times. Very random. As we set foot in this space, we realized that there was nothing random about it. Its raw feeling is what we were attracted to. It had all the elements one envisions when thinking of a New York loft space - a vast open space with exposed brick, hardwood floor, high ceilings and large windows.
On top of that, its downtown central location was hard to beat. It is walking distance from so many buzzing areas - Greenwich Village, Union Square, East Village, Soho, Meatpacking, Flatiron. And with the Union Square subway station a stone's throw away, you easily travel all over Manhattan and its boroughs.
Every since that Sunday in the Spring of '96, the neighborhood has changed quiet a bit and only for the better. A good supermarket was a rarity back then, but now we are spoiled with one of New York's most popular farmer's markets 4 times a week right on Union Square and many wonderful grocery stores including Wholefoods and Trader Joe's.
We're at the heart of it all and even after nearly 20 years still enjoying every moment of it.
The loft is fully equipped and is ideal for a family or group to stay. It is designed based on the premise that you can move in instantly and experience New York like a true local. Not to mention its highly central location, which makes it an ideal base for your New York visit!. Hope to welcome you soon!
Our family of 6 (4 kids ages 6-14) stayed very comfortably in the Loft on Broadway. The kids loved the loft bedroom (especially my teenage son who had his own personal loft space), and it was so nice of Harriette to keep some toys there for the littler ones. The location was EXCELLENT next to Union Square station; we could take the subway easily to any destination. And many places were within walking distance: Chinatown, Washington Square, restaurants, Whole Foods, Walgreens, and nice coffee houses, including one right below us. The wi-fi signal/connection in the loft wasn't great, but we were so busy seeing NYC that it didn't matter much. Check-in was easy; we simply texted Harriette's representative, who met us at the loft with the keys and showed us the basics. The loft had everything: charm in its decor, comfortable beds, a laundry machine and dryer, plenty of dish ware, etc. I'd highly recommend for the traveling family!!
We would highly recommend this loft to anyone but particularly families as has a great layout and there is tons of space, which is unusual in NY. We are a family of 5 (kids 15,12, 7) and stayed here for a week, so the two single beds for the younger kids and loft space for the man child worked well. Everything was nicely decorated and the kids really liked their room.
The location is great as traffic is a bit of a nightmare so jumping on the subway means you can be most places in at least half the time to catching a cab, plus it is a main subway line. Union Square itself is a good hub to stay in and there was a great farmers market on certain days. There is lots of good shopping walking up to Chelsea and Eataly is a great restaurant near the Flatiron building if you don't mind a 20 minute walk.
The living area is cool and there is another day bed out there. Having a kitchen is fantastic and there is a supermarket to the right looking at Union Square and Wholefoods to the left as most reviewers have mentioned. Having a computer to book and print off tickets was very helpful and the washing dryer also a plus. As a light sleeper, it wasn't too noisy at night as parts of NY can be and the road out front not one of those main ones despite it being Broadway (but where it is tapering off).
I hadn't booked through VRBO before so was a bit nervous but everything worked out perfectly and Harriet does live above on another floor and there are only about 4 apartments in the building. It does look pretty run down from the front but I did hear this was a tactic of apartments not to attract any unwanted attention. Having looked at many hotels and apartments to stay in, we were really happy with this choice as it is hard to accommodate 5 people. Stay here, you won't regret it!
My wife, daughter and me had the chance to spend eight days in this beautiful apartment last September. Well, as title says : PERFECT !
Excellent location on Broadway, three minutes walking distance from Union Square subway from where you can easily reach almost all spots in town, plenty of cafes, restaurants and shops in the area so it is very convenient after a full tiring day visits in New York (even for breakfast if you're really too lazy to make your own coffee at home with the in-house coffee machine, just cross the street and Le Pain Quotidien and Pret a Manger are there for you and don't miss Max Brenner Chocolate !).
Plenty of space inside with a fully serviced kitchen, enormous living room with a large table and an extra big bed to relax. Bedrooms are really nice with very confortable mattresses and linens. Everything you need is just there where you'd look for it, you don't even have to bring your laptop since there's a 27" iMac ready to use and an Ipad, too.
The owner is leaving just upstairs. She is the perfect host, never intrusive yet promptly there to assist you in case of need. Since we were leaving on a night flight back to Europe she kept all our luggage and stuffs in her apartment the whole day so we could fully enjoy our last tours and shopping in New York, dank je wel Harriette !
My friends and I so enjoyed staying at this place and hope it is still being rented when we have future trips to New York. I would love to stay here again and will recommend it to other friends.
We all agreed that the apartment was exquisitely decorated, cool, comfortable and in a great location. We were surprised to recieve a very nice bottle of wine as a guest gift upon arriving, which we enjoyed one evening with pastries we'd bought from the Plaza Hotel.
We walked to many great coffee shops, brunch spots, and restraurants! And there's a Whole Foods one block away for minor groceries to have at the apartment. I highly recommend this place!
Our family of 5 loved our stay at the Loft and can't wait to come back in the future!
From the moment we walked in the door we fell in love with the apartment.
The apartment size was great (with LOTS of space to relax) and all extra features (like the iMac to use) help make an awesome experience in NYC. And the close location to cafes, restaurants and the subway made it the ideal location.
Beautiful loft, conveniently located to sights, food, subway. Relaxing sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of the city, especially for the young children and seniors in our party. The loft is very well appointed, clean and has all the amenities. Harriette is a wonderful host, accommodating our travel times and responding to everything we needed.
