The “Apple Orchard Riverfront Cottage”
Just a quick block off the Interstate and not too far from Asheville you soon find yourself traveling quietly through an apple orchard on a quaint narrow mountain road which suddenly explodes into a riverfront vista complete with rushing rapids right in the front yard of a truly lovely cottage surrounded by plant pots filled with vegetation and glorious blossoming flowers, weather permitting. You're smiling and haven't even parked the car yet. Off to the right you see the challenge of a bright new shuffleboard court beckoning some good old family competition later, and think what a nice way to bring everyone together. To enhance the experience you find an enormous exterior deck right off the living room that affords a more leisurely opportunity to sit and reflect on this lovely river view while the sounds of rushing waters subtlety background your relaxed conversation with loved ones. As you eventually return inside to a bright, large gathering room filled with endless hardwood floors and luscious warm room colors you enjoy the warmth of a flickering fire in a room filled with family and friends. You’re now in the “Apple Orchard Riverfront Cottage”.
Our little cottage was built in the 1850s and we completely remodeled to make it comfortable and cozy. All systems are brand new. Inside you soon discover three large bedrooms with amazingly comfortable beds and two beautiful spotless bathrooms, all filled with hardwood floors and plenty of windows. Throughout the cottage wonderful eclectic furnishings hand selected by caring, keen eyes continue to intrigue and peak both your interest and curiosity. Your exploration soon finds a wonderfully bright and cheerful, newly-remodeled kitchen well equipped and filled with just about any type of gadgetry required to prepare the tastiest hors d’oeuvres or a gourmet meal for eight. Nothing has been left to wishful thinking. A beautiful kitchen island topped in mountain hardwood beckons you to sit, sip coffee or open a bottle of wine to quietly linger and savior this moment. No kids for a moment, just the two of you.
And as you sit and sip, be it coffee or wine, to ponder the day’s potential; you realize how many wonderful opportunities await you here in the Great Smoky Mountains. You may decide to take a long leisurely walk right here at home along almost a mile of river frontage and ending in the apple orchards or bee hive stands where you might buy apples, peaches and honey. Perhaps you decide a quick drive into Asheville for a leisurely day of exploring the Biltmore or The Grove Park Inn, or all the neat restaurants and shops. For those more inclined to physical activity you might find yourself planning on rafting the rapids or tubing right in front of your cottage or zip lining the tree canopies near Asheville, or all the above. In fall, you may want to hike the mountain trails to view the vivid fall colors, knowing it’s a must see. And later in the year you may plan on the challenge of skiing the slopes of Cataloochee, just minutes away.
Regardless of your choice of so many varied things to do and see, one thing is truly certain: you ultimately will enjoy coming home again and again to the warmth and caring found nestled in your lovely home away from home, the “Apple Orchard Riverfront Cottage”.

What a perfect place to relax and enjoy a vacation! We fly-fished, played golf, contributed to the Cherokee Tribe via their casino, visited the Asheville Arboretum, Biltmore Mansion, Grove Park Inn, many restaurants and pubs in the surrounding area.! The weather was perfect and the Southern Hospitality was in full bloom as well as the beautiful trees and flowers.
Thank-you Thad for taking such great care of us and the gift of a tasty bottle of chardonnay. It was thoroughly enjoyed.! Thanks also for providing a " home away from home."
And we shopped in Waynesville, Brevard, Asheville and Black Mountain.!
OH MY GOODNESS! The pictures do not do this place justice! The house is amazing inside! Bedrooms are roomy, comfy, and pretty. Kitchen/pantry well stocked. I was a bit worried when I 'google' mapped it and saw how close it was to town (we like isolated places) but once we turned on the road, we had no more worries! When we were at the "Red Umbrella Cottage" (as we came to call it) it seemed as if we were miles from anyone else! The land is gorgeous and a great place for families with children of all ages. The river isn't so close to the cottage that we had to worry about my 18 month old great-grandson when they came to visit and the yards around the house were so large, he felt as though he was on a great adventure everytime he went out the door! Our two dogs have been depressed since we came home. They go out the back door here and come right back in. At the Cottage they would stay out for hours, but they never wandered off! The neighbors seemed like dear friends by the end of the week. They were helpful but not intrusive. We were told of a place to go see elk, and we did! And what a beautiful drive to get there! We had fun fishing in the beautiful river, we caught many fish of good size but they were so beautiful, we just released them. We were told of a 'trout pond' about an hour away and had a great time there with my grandson and his family and brought some delicious fillets home. We felt so at home at the Cottage and in the area that we really hated to leave. Thad and his wife are a delight and since we don't drink alcohol, they left us apple juice, sausage, and biscuits. You will never regret spending time at the Cottage. Our only complaint was that our time there had to end. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful place with us and our two dogs. We enjoyed our time at the Cottage tremedously!
Our family of five (and labrador retriever) thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this comfortable cottage. We had everything we needed, and the house was clean and neat. We especially loved the wonderful bedding and extra amenities, such as firewood and a well-stocked pantry and kitchen. The location is convenient to both Asheville and Waynesville (20-30 minutes from either). However, the secluded property is at the end of a dirt road adjacent to a lovely orchard. The riverfront area was neatly mowed and accessible. Extremely peaceful even though we were just minutes off of I-40!
We absolutely loved this cottage. There was not one disappointment, it was perfect. Beautifully decorated, fabulous views, and an owner who truly cares about his guests. We have used VRBO for approximately ten years so we are seasoned veterans! This was the first time that we walked into a cottage and found gifts waiting for us. We are already looking at our calendar to see when we can return. We highly recommend the cottage, the area, and the owner. All top notch, first class!
My husband, 2 pups, and I spent a lovely Labor Day weekend in this beautiful home! Thad was so generous to leave a bottle of white wine, locally made pork sausage, and biscuits for us to enjoy...and we certainly did! This house was all we had hoped it would be for a relaxing, peaceful, and perfect getaway. We only left the property to get groceries and an ice cream sundae one night. Our Black Lab and Shepard LOVED running around the property and then cooled off in the River! We will certainly return & highly recommend this property to EVERYONE 2 legged and 4 legged!!
We stayed at the Apple Orchard Riverfront Cottage, from June 28 – July 12, 2014. What a terrific home and lovely property! The weather was just incredible, with temperatures in the upper 70’s to mid-80’s. In fact, we never turned on the air conditioner once during our entire stay! The house was clean and had very comfortable furnishings. We loved spending time out on the deck, enjoying the sunshine, and beautiful views. The sound of the rushing river and the birds singing all day long added great pleasure as well. And as an extra bonus there was a beautiful orchard just outside your back door! We spent a lot of time fishing down at the river. We caught Bass, Trout, Red Eye Stripers, Crappie and Sunfish. We fished with worms, but had most of our luck using little fly fishing baits and soft plastic lures. This was a lot of fun, and there were hardly any mosquitos, gnats or other pesky insects bothering us. Lastly, we dined out several times during our time in the Canton/Waynesville area. We tried several different restaurants including Maggie’s Galley, and The Sweet Onion. The service and food are simply fantastic at The Sweet Onion. They have a wonderful variety of food offered, and their Crab Cakes are the BOMB. It’s hard to believe you can find really good seafood, in the mountains…but you can! We strongly recommend staying here at this wonderful cottage. In closing, thank you again Thad and Marilyn for sharing your fabulous home, and being extremely kind hostess!
Stayed eight nights and nearly cried as well pulled away! The home was super inviting, good cable TV, nice kitchen, remote (but still close to Taco Bell, thank God!). Took our babies, two Siberian Huskies, hiking every day, though it was also nice to lounge around the house too. Asheville, Waynesville and Black Mountains were nice areas (Asheille was a bit too trendy for our tastes however). Last day of our visit we went to Full Moon Worlfdog Sanctuary in Black Mountain, where we were able to partake in a ritual with native americans to pray for the animals and their wellbeing. That was the most interesting event that we attended, very unique experience, and we feel blessed to be able to help. We would absolutely come back to this home and recommend to others. We bought grass fed beef from a farmer in Asheville and in Black Mountain. Talking with him was very enlightening. This was one of our favorite vacations! (and we vacation alot!)
