Space 700 sq. ft.
Property type cottage

About the property

1 bedroom, 1 bath, sleeps 2-4

Romantic stone guest cottage is nestled in park like grounds, which are adjacent to Leo Carillo State Park and miles of gorgeous trails. A 5 minute drive from one of Malibu's finest beaches--Leo Carrillo State Beach. Haven for hikers, mountain bikers, motorcyclists, beach goers, or those who just want to sit and rest. English, French, Spanish, Italian, and German spoken by the owners.

Detailed Description of Property: Get away to a one of a kind oasis in the hills of Malibu. A rare wonderland 5 minutes from Leo Carillo Beach, one of Malibu's prettiest, and surrounded by miles of state park and trails. The property itself is like being in a secluded park, with the only neighbors anywhere near being the friendly, quiet property owners who live up top and are available to help you with anything you need, including fresh herbs from the garden and tips on where to go around town. One is a Malibu native, and they both have lived all over the world and speak German, French, Spanish and Italian, in addition to English. Your home is a large cottage built out of the stones from the surrounding mountainside. Enjoy the winding brick and stone paths through the grounds where you can visit 4 friendly chickens or the charming organic garden.

Cottage Amenities: It is beautiful and luxurious, equipped with a California king size bed decked in bamboo linens, a full kitchen, wireless high speed Internet, 42' flat screen TV, dvd and cd player, and a large stone two person shower. Outside, you may help yourself to lounge chairs or an outdoor eating area with gas grill.

Nearby Surroundings: The property is located in northern Malibu, which is the part of the Los Angeles coastline most protected from development. There are dozens of beaches a short drive away in addition to Leo Carillo, which is at the bottom of the hill. For example, Zuma Beach is about 10 minutes away. Nature trails are all over--a lovely one is less than a five minute walk away. The property is adjacent to Mulholland Hwy, which is a favorite for those who love to bike. We are about 15 minutes from local shopping, and within a half hour, you can be at all kinds of shops--in Malibu, Agoura Hills, among other neighboring towns. We are an approximately 45 minute drive to Santa Monica and Santa Barbara.

This little house and it's surroundings are amazing! So cozy and comfortable and Diane and Mattias are the nicest people you could hope for. The eggs from their hens and freshly baked bread were such a nice touch! We plan to come back again and again! Thank you.

Cozy and comfortable with a beautiful private setting

  • 5 of 5

The photos were appealing, the cottage was even better in real life. Very comfortable California king size bed, soft bedding, well equipped kitchen, amazing shower that was hard to get out of, Wifi, and although there weren't very many channels to chose from on the TV we found a few movies to watch from the collection. The cottage has a rustic feel, made out of stones and is truly one of a kind. My husband was very pleased I chose it instead of a hotel. I was born in the south of France, and with the crickets serenading at night, the pine trees on the property and the winding road to get to it, it was a flashback from my youth in Provence. When we pulled up to the gate, I felt like we were entering Paradiso Perduto.

We stayed with our 11 year old son, and he absolutely loved walking and hiking the grounds, checking out the chickens, he even ate a peach or two.

The owners are very nice people, they left some beach toys for our child, so he was able to boogy board down at Zuma beach which is a beautiful and clean beach.

I will say that this cottage is for couples or close families as there are no doors to any of the rooms, it's a round dwelling with open floor plans, you can see each other from every room, but the bathroom has curtains through both entrances for privacy.

The front iron gate closes after a minute of pushing the open button, as we were told, so be more careful than we were as our vehicle suffered some damage when it closed on it.

I very much recommend this property, and can't imagine anyone being disappointed in choosing it.

Thank you Matthias and Diane for the wonderful stay!

Owner's Response: We are so glad you enjoyed it. The other day, I stumbled upon pictures of a friend's property in Provence (outside of Aix-en-Provence) in which I had the privilege to stay for a weekend in during my youth, and I remember sitting on the grounds thinking now THIS is how I would like to live someday. Funny, it was a stone place surrounded by nature. We thought when we saw this place of places like that we had both loved and longed for. So, so, so sorry to hear your car got damaged! I hope insurance covered it. And that it did not ruin your good time - doesn't sound like it, thank goodness. A la prochaine fois, et bonne rentrée!

Quiet and serene

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful property, quiet, and serene. Living space is a bit larger than it appears in the pics! Lots of windows, light, and a wonderful ocean cross breeze. The king bed was so soft and cozy with equally soft and good quality linens..... hoping to return in the future.

Beautiful place but needs a little help.

  • 4 of 5

I loved just about everything this rental had. The location, different type of house and the setting were perfect. The only reason I couldn't give it five stars was the shower; the head in the shower is too small. It was difficult to get the shampoo and cream rinse out of my hair which is above shoulder length. Also because not much water was coming out of the shower it was cold when showering. This definitely needs to be addressed. Owners were very nice.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for visiting us. We are so sorry you had an issue with the showerhead. I wish you had mentioned it, as it is an easy, quick fix, and we would have been glad to come help take care of it.. Sometimes the minerals in our spring water accumulate, so it needs to be rinsed out for a minute. I am glad to hear you otherwise enjoyed your stay!

Great Experience!

  • 5 of 5

Driving through the mountains can be a bit scary, but I got used to it after a couple of days. Once we arrived at the cottage, we were thouroughly impressed. It is beautifully situated on the property and allows privacy from the owners. Speaking of owners, Diane & Mathias are awesome hosts. We rarely saw them during our stay, but would not have mined a few more conversations as they are good people. The outdoor area served as a great picnic area to host local family members on our last night. The property is very close to beautiful Malbu beaches. The only suggestion I have is to change the shower head to an energy efficient model as the current one sprays very hard and gets water all over. This does not affect my perfect rating. This is a very enjoyable vacation rental.

Owner's Response: We are so glad you had a good time! It was wonderful having you. I can see how the canyon, which is normal living for most of us in this area, could be a bit of a shock coming from the midwest. Thankfully, that part of the drive is only 5 minutes, if you come from the coast. :-) Good to hear you adjusted and hopefully could relax and take in its beauty. Thanks for the note on the shower head. We had some previous feedback that the pressure was not strong enough. I guess maybe we went overboard. :-) We have adjusted it again, and hopefully now we have it just right! We hope you had a good homecoming!!

Even More Amazing Than The Pictures!

  • 5 of 5

Diane and Matthias are incredible, generous, kind, thoughtful hosts who have created a really special and very unique piece of private paradise. I was welcomed as a friend and made to feel at home straight away. The guesthouse is even more amazing in real life and it was hard to remember that I was in California and not Provence. The bed is so comfortable I did not want to get out of it. The shower was great, a real indoor/outdoor experience with the windows open and the water coming from a well on the property. It was such a treat to have real drinking water straight from the tap. Everything was very clean, of the very best quality and right where I would want or expect it. The only thing I did not love was the fridge and the stove, but there is always something and they were both certainly functional and met my needs. I am really Grateful to have stayed and would go back anytime.

Owner's Response: Lesley, it was so nice having you. We hope you will go back. Meeting you felt like meeting an old friend from the start, and our only regret was not having more time. Happy trails to you! Diane
