Property type house
Minimum Stay 1 - 2 nights

About the property

The Potager is a blissful country retreat found at Golden Point. a secluded valley alongside Forest Creek where the first alluvial gold was found.

The heritage sandstone cottage (1870) offers unique self contained accommodation. Brimming with rustic charm the whitewashed interiors are complemented by an eclectic mix of furniture, art, books and modern amenities.

The Potager can be the inspiration for an adventure or a cosy retreat for reflection or reviving the jaded spirits.

In the main body of the house there are two bedrooms; one with a queen and the other cojoining with two singles.

Across a small courtyard is the studio bedroom with a queen, a single and ensuite.

A fully equipped kitchen with a dining table and a 'nectre' wood heater provides all that is required to cook up a storm (produce from the local saturday morning market nearby at Wesley Hill or the farmers market on the 1st weekend of the month)

A spacious stone living room with 6 tall windows with views out to the garden and swimming pool. A wonderful library of books, a refrectory dining table, a huge open stone fireplace, comfy sofas in which to relax and unwind.

Doors lead to an outside terrace where there is a BBQ overlooking Forest Creek.

The 20mx6m inground swimming pool is hedged by rosa sanders a white rambler and surrounded by natural bush and abundant birdlife.

The potager garden has been 'a continuing works in progress' over the past 20 years and is ever evolving according to the climatic conditions!

A real winter warmer :)

Beautiful stone construction - loved lounging around in front of the fire- so much character and if you love keeping fire boxes and open fires going to warm the winter nights then this is the place. Everything we needed.

Rustic and Peaceful

  • 4 of 5

We loved our stay. From the creeky wire door you enter the original kitchen (circa 1870) and 2 adjoining bedrooms. Bathroom is unique with stained glass adjoining the throne and a lovely stone shower well. Rustic blue wall makes it quirky. You then wind down to the newer sections - a lovely lounge/dining room with huge open fire and library. BBQ outside. Separate flat with en-suite outside - great for couples. Large in-ground pool and garden area needing a little TLC. Jane was very helpful - lives close by. 10 minutes to Castlemaine. All in all a unique home well suited to the goldfields setting.

Beautiful - Tranquil - Fantastic

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at The Potager for a week and could' ve stayed for a month it was so lovely. The accommodation is a lovely rustic 1880 stone cottage with beautiful garden and surrounds, an amazing pool and a vast array of birds and wildlife It has everything you need for a comfy stay. It does not have a dishwasher but who needs one any way. The owner does live on the premises but completely respects your privacy and space. If you are looking for peace quiet and the most serene holiday then this is your place we loved it ,you will too. Will definitely return.

Two days is not enough...

  • 5 of 5

A house that sets you free the moment you enter. Classic 1880s goldrush house with the prettiest studio attached. We lazed in the garden, enjoyed cooking in the rustic kitchen, ate a long lazy lunch, fell asleep, woke up when we dived into the beautiful pool, saw kangaroos, an endless parade of birds and an echidna. At night we lit a roaring fire in the living room, drank wine, told bad jokes and laughed ourselves into the cosy beds.

Beautiful old world charm

  • 5 of 5

This beautiful stone cottage, with its rambling layout, stone floors, wooden kitchen tops, and Ned Kelly stoves plus huge open fireplace, embodies the charm and character that my wife and I cherish in a weekend getaway. The grounds are breathtaking, with a mix of exotics and natives, and tall poplars lining the entrance. Modern it may not be; if, however, you prize character and history, there's none better!
