Sylvan river setting for private relaxation

Bedrooms 3
Space 2,100 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

About the property

3 bedrooms, 1 full bath, 1 bath w/ shower, sleeps 6 (+ 2 in charming loft)

Just east of Seattle, Wilkomish sits on 3 acres of towering evergreens amidst the verdant natural beauty of the Northwest. Straddling a river that cascades over granite rock, the property offers complete privacy for a relaxing, fun getaway with family or friends--or solitude for individual respite or creative time. The charming house has a spacious master suite with spectacular river views. Two other bedrooms sleep 4. A well-appointed kitchen is new. The dining room seats up to 10. Log walls line the living/gathering room (in the original part of the house).

Outdoor features include a large deck, hot tub, gas grill, gazebo, footbridge [crossing the river to a playhouse], fire pit, small ponds, and a level lawn area spacious enough for outdoor games. Our river house, while secluded and peaceful, is just 20 to 30 minutes from activities and events in downtown Seattle and a 25-minute drive from the Seattle/Tacoma airport.

We cannot accommodate weddings.

The House:

- Original log cabin room for comfortable gathering includes HDTV (sorry, no cable), DVD player, iPod/CD player, and internet access. Ladder leads to charming loft above living room for kids (or adventurous adults) to play or sleep in

- Views of river and bridge from dining room; table can seat up to 10 people with extensions

- Spacious master bedroom suite with queen bed; gorgeous river views

- Master bathroom with two sinks, large shower, laundry facilities [in closet]

- Flower bedroom with full bed

- Bird bedroom with single bed & pop-up trundle (makes queen bed or 2 singles when pulled out)

- Full bath with tub/shower

- Newly renovated kitchen with plenty of space for cooking and gathering. Viking cook top, microwave oven, convection oven, dishwasher, large refrigerator, wine cooler, coffee maker, toaster. Granite island with bar stools. Table settings, dishes, utensils, pots and pans, and basic cooking supplies (spices, sugar, oil, etc.) provided

- Study/writing room with large windows and a great view of river

The Property: Wilkomish sits on 3 acres of private, verdant Northwest forest. Pass the large frog pond on your left, and park your car at the bunkhouse, then walk along a short path past a tiny pond to the main entrance of the cottage.

The back yard features a large deck with chairs and tables for eight. Relax in the jacuzzi and gaze up at the fir trees and sky. Perhaps our blue heron will visit. Walk toward the gazebo to see the expanse (250 feet) of riverfront. Cross the footbridge to visit our little playhouse at the edge of Tiger Mountain State Forest. Complete privacy, with no neighbors in view in any direction.

At night you might want to light some logs in fire pit or play games on the expanse of lawn bordered by the river and our third pond.

Due to our allergies, we respectfully ask that you leave your pets at home. Smoking is not allowed.

The Area:

Wilkomish sits on a stone-lined, clear water river at the end of a county road. It is secluded and quiet, but only 3.4 miles from I-90. Seattle is a pleasant half-hour drive away. In half an hour, you can be listening to the Seattle Symphony, touring the unique [Frank Gehry-designed] Rock and Roll Museum or Seattle Art Museum, or visiting Pike Place Market. Within 45 minutes by car, you can be on a ferry to one of the picturesque islands in Puget Sound, or skiing at a Cascade mountain wonderland. Seattle offers all of that and much more; there is something for every interest in this beautiful area! Gorgeous scenery, alpine hiking, mountain biking, water sports are all within reach during your stay.

Wonderful, magical cabin in beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful time we had! The house is comfy, cozy, and so well appointed! The sound of the river is perfect! The kitchen is a marvel! Lots of different areas to hang out - plenty of soft chairs and couches for relaxing! And an amazing deck! The gazebo and rope bridge are one of a kind + a hot tub! What more could anyone want? How about a beautiful garden full of pathways, an awesome fire pit and a pond full of frogs! Wilkomish is charming, clean, private, and an easy drive from Seattle. The perfect getaway! Thank you so much! Sorry for the abundance of !!! but trust me they are warranted!

Owner's Response: We're so glad you enjoyed your time at our house. We love many of the same things about it that you mention. In spring, all of the various flowers are coming into bloom in succession, so it's a colorful paradise. Thanks for posting a review!

Mixed feelings

  • 3 of 5

I will say that the setting and house are beautiful & very peaceful. We did have a few issues that made our stay less than ideal however. Although the kitchen is remodelled, the cooking and serving dishes are not adequate for a group of 6-8 adults (as the property is described as accommodating). The owner was able to direct me to a suitable skillet stored in a bedroom armoire (?), but no such luck for a stockpot for pasta. There is 1 bowl large enough for salad. There are lots & lots of plates & silverware though.

We were unhappy to discover a dead mouse in a trap in the living area. We had young children with us and the trap, as well as rodent, were not a welcome find. If there is a rodent problem, a professional service should be engaged before the property is rented.

Lastly, although the owner knew the payment was from Canada, by Visa, she deducted the international charges from my "damage" deposit, with no discussion, just a note that "we don't pay this" along with the check. I think it's called a cost of doing business, not damage.

A lovely place, but due to the issues mentioned, we wouldn't stay again.

Owner's Response: We're glad you enjoyed our peaceful and beautiful house. We love the sound of the river, the colors in the garden, and the birds flying through. We have a regular pest control service, yet because the house sits on three acres of woods, there are mice that sometimes come in no matter how often the exterminators come. We manage those occasional intruders with small traps that are behind furniture rather than out in the open. Bees and butterflies and squirrels are welcome in our wooded enclave; nature is nature, and we enjoy it all. We've seen rabbits, herons, eagles, frogs, a fox---and our lawn-mowing person saw a bear cub several years ago. Future guests, please rent the house only if you want to stay in a forested area. For preparing and serving salads, the kitchen island has a large deep drawer with several very large bowls--2 shallow, wide (16" diameter) bowls and 3-4 deeper bowls that each hold enough salad for a group of 14 (which we hosted for a lovely lunch in May). Pasta, sauces, and soup cook well in our two 4-quart pans, but we'll locate a larger pot to add to the collection. We pay every standard credit card fee (as we did in this case) but not the additional international fees that can be exorbitant. This is true of any hotel or house we have ever rented. International fees are paid by us the customer, not the place rented. (We paid the $40 normal cc fee in this case, but not the extra $27 intl fee.) The security deposit covers everything from extra finance fees to missing/stolen items to charges on our video services to mailing things left behind to stains or lost keys. It is not a simply a damage deposit; it's a full security deposit. To Rebecca: We are puzzled that you deducted two stars for a pan, a mouse, and having to pay your bank's service charge, but didn't mention or seem to appreciate that we granted your request for early check-in and also offered late check-out.

Charming, relaxing cabin in the woods

  • 5 of 5

Completely enjoyed our stay at this charming, relaxing cabin along the Raging River. A quick trip from Seattle, yet a thoroughly 'away-from-it-all' feel. The owners were responsive and kind. Highly recommend.

Serene and remote, yet conveniently close.

  • 5 of 5

Great spot for a group stay. Unfortunately we had work-related activities and did not get to enjoy the spot during daytime hours. However, the evenings were cozy, and the hot tub next to the river was wonderful.
