Ooi House is a unique modern minimal design with king beds and ensuite bathrooms. The Chalet has the 4th King bed, ½ kitchen, large bathroom, deck and ocean views. The House and Chalet sleep 8 but we often rent to couples or just two rooms off peak.

Ooi House was originally built to be part of an Aman Resort, set on 6 acres of garden with 100 olive trees on the banks of Margaret River. The property is located on the coastal hills up from the River Mouth Beach, close to Prevelly with ocean and ridge views over the river at it's widest point. Ooi House and Chalet are private and not overlooked by other properties and the location is central to all the Margaret River beaches and the Town which is 3 miles directly inland (10 min drive) the best wineries in the area are nearby.

The master bedroom is impressive with 20' ceilings, and a moving wall of Japanese sen veneer to separate the large modern bathroom with massive bath. Japanese sen is a main detail throughout the house and chalet. The master bedroom has outside door to a small concrete courtyard with views out to the ocean and over the northern banks of Margaret River.

The House is designed into two sections with a large steel and glass living area and cantilevered roof separated by an internal Koi pond and central open air deck by a hallway and separate roof for the private bedrooms which is 12” thick rammed earth walls with two of the bedroom suits linked to outside courtyards and the central bedroom linked to a light filled study. Each bedroom has 2-3 doorways (inside/outside)

The local use of rammed earth walls creates a cool environment for summer and retains the heat in winter. The many courtyards provide sheltered outdoor sitting areas and trap the winter sun.

A full glazed glass wall in the living area exposes the large open space to winter sun, drawing the eye to the spectacular all-round views. The living area is surrounded by glazed walls giving long external views to the West, North and East. Each area is designed for a long view through the entire house and out into the landscape. The long views extend from the olive grove of 100 trees on the east side of the house, down the long hallway and out towards the ocean on the west. This view is also from the front door, over the koi pond which is surrounded by walls of glass and out over the sunken lounge and deck to the ocean. If you lie on the bed in the central bedroom the view is over the koi pond, through the living space and out to the ridge over the river on the north side.

Ooi House has been hugely influential in Australian modern architecture. The house has been seen by hundreds of architects, students and builders. People have flown in from the eastern states just to see the colour of the rammed earth walls and study the exceptional details and specifications.

The property is for holiday rental only. Under the AMR Shire regulation Ooi House is licensed for accommodation purposes.

No School leavers.

There is a 1 meter drop from the front deck and an open central koi pond not suitable for toddlers.

Many guests ask us about the ventral blinds which are set and cannot be used. The blinds are hugely expensive and we are in the process of sourcing a stronger tape to restring them, Most of the blinds although operational need re taping, we don't allow guests to play with them.

The house is designed so the sun does not fall on the north windows at the height of summer but comes in and warms the house in winter. Ooi House was built with an awareness of the weather and changing seasonal landscape, it is not a house that protects you from what is going on outside, if there is a storm you feel it and you see it clearly through all the glass, horizontal rain or lightening, if the moon is full and lighting is low inside then it's brighter outside and you will see the moon and skyline.

Stayz Award Winner over many years.

RAIA AWARD description from website- 'Ooi House'

Built on the banks of WA's Margaret River, Ooi house is a single-storey, three bedroom holiday residence with a guest chalet intended to be the first of several. These relate to courtyards, pools and decks. Because the semi-rural site is not overlooked by other properties, the design of both houses promotes transparency and openness. Materials (stabilised earth walls, tallowood floors and screens, steel roofing, glass) have been chosen to relate to the natural context and local trade practices. The plan divides the main house into two zones: a steel and glass living wing with a skillion roof, and a private wing, made with earth walls under a pitched roof, of two bedroom suites linked by a courtyard. The chalet is built of similar materials.

Jury Verdict-A house at peace with the landscape and the horizon. A house of details, although every junction and element has been thoughtfully and carefully resolved to a high level of consistency. There is a continual delight and surprise as one moves from space to space. While its rammed earth walls and the giant kauri locate it firmly as part of the south west of Western Australia, the calm refinement and elements such as screens and reflecting pool impart an Asian sensibility. This is a house of great serenity. It acknowledges its exceptional site, directing views towards the river, bush hillside and the ocean. It also sits in dramatic contrast to its environment, a light pavilion anchored by its rammed earth spines. This house resurrects some of the fading traditions of Australian domestic architecture, giving them an added sophistication and sensitivity which results in empathy of form, space and texture with the landscape. It belongs to the school of seductive architecture.

from Dedece website description of 'Ooi House'

The use of pavillions seperated by a spine of circulation is evidenced in the project by Kerry Hill Architects. The house utilises the local use of rammed-earth with the bedroom pavillion surrounded thereby presenting an almost solid barrier to the cold south-westerly winds. Its ridged roof is lifted above the rammed earth walls, seperated by timber strips. Courtyards have been inserted into the house to provide sheltered outdoor sitting areas and to act as sun traps in winter. The living room is contained by a full glazed wall, with the roof lifted in a mono-pitched to the north, thereby maximising the exposure of the room to the north sun and the spectactular all-round views. Part of the house is anchored into the slope but the living room, with its lifted roof, is elevated over the site, emphasising its transparent lightness. The plan of the house is rectilinear and uses a great amount of full-height glazing. There are two distinct zones within the buildings, that of the sleeping zones made out of thick rammed earth and living areas such as dining/linving spaces are made out of light steel structures and transparent walls.
