About the property

Smitties Cottage has a really special feel. It is a gorgeous, spacious, character filled three bedroom cottage surrounded by bush and only a 3 hour drive from Sydney.

The cottage is nestled in the beautiful rainforest of Smiths Lake and is surrounded by palm trees and towering gum trees. This means there is an abundance of native bird and wildlife to watch, you can enjoy nature at its purest.

It is intimate and cosy yet has many different spots to relax in, if you don not all want to sit together, the front veranda, undercover garden area, living room, dining table next to the bi-folds, bedroom with its wall of window etc. It is in a great spot, filtered lake views without hearing any watercraft that may be passing and only a short walking distance to the shops or Frothy Coffee.

The cottage is light, bright and tastefully furnished in the French shabby chic style, there are a mixture of antiques as well to add to the glamour and romance.

The open plan living room opens into the dining and kitchen area where the large bi-fold doors lead you out to the sun dappled decks and back garden, which has a wonderful quiet bush setting.

Why not relax in the hammock and enjoy a cuppa or glass of wine in the sun while listening to the sounds of the birds and the breeze through the trees?

Relaxation and tranquillity far removed from your busy lifestyle, it is simply magic.

If you want to do more, a short drive takes you to more amazing (empty) beaches, Forster, shopping, cinemas etc and there are regular markets beside a lake nearby.

Smiths Lake is one of those secret places that once discovered, are returned to time and again.

It is a lovely little fishing village looking over the tranquil waters of the lake. The lake that surrounds the village is separated from the Pacific ocean by Cellito Beach, a secluded pristine beach which is world-class to rival any beach, with white sand and greeny blue waters, surrounded by rainforest.

The actual Smiths Lake, right beside the ocean is perfect for water sports in calmer waters. The famous Frothy Coffee Cafe which sits over the lake is ever popular with a wide veranda and great view over the vessels for hire. Even the local corner shop with its array of 5c lollies is something special

The cottage is just a short stroll to the lake and a few minutes walk to Amaroo Beach, the Frothy Coffee Boatshed and the boat ramp. The lake is a safe place for swimming, especially if you have small children, as the waters are shallow and tranquil. They are also a haven for those who love their water sports or for someone just looking to enjoy a stroll along the sandy shore. Why not throw a line in and catch your own supper?

Also within a short stroll you will come across the village shops where you will find a butchers, newsagents, bottle shop, a general store and even a hairdresser. There is a bowling club for those looking for some fun or who dont fancy cooking at home.

There really is something for everyone ...

What a great find!

A charming little retreat offering old school charm and character with lots of love to make it extra special and not just another basic holiday rental. The place was spacious enough for a family of four and our two spoodles loved it too! And sitting outside doing not much was the best - morning sun around the back and afternoon drinks with waterviews around the front, very tough and we will definitely be back!

Cosy and fun weekender

  • 4 of 5

We just enjoyed an impromptu weekend away at Smitties, with 2 adults, 2 kids and 2 dogs. The cottage was very comfortable for our family size, with heaps of interesting artefacts around the cottage to discover. The kitchen is well equipped and the beds were clean and comfortable. Our short stay would have been perfect if there had have been a securely fenced area to contain the kids and dogs, but this appears to be a work in progress and will be a definite improvement to the property when it happens. Besides that, I would recommend Smitties for a short, cost-effective accommodation option, as it is not only peaceful and quirky, but also close by the awesome beaches. The owners are also very friendly, and I am sure if there was a problem they would go out of their way to fix it.

Poor holiday accommodation

  • 1 of 5

Wish I had of read the date on the reviews for this property before I booked...While I do appreciate that Johanna allowed us to change our booking date the accommodation was not in the best condition.. When the reviews were made on this property 6 years ago the property was probably back then in good condition....between the coachroaches..spiders and a scorpion (which I left in a container on the bench I also have photos of the coachroaches)...cobwebs cover the windows inside and husband had just had a total knee replacement in March 2016 and if I had of know that the shower was over the spa bath making it so difficult for him to get in and out and then no bath mat which I went into town and purchased I definitely would not have where in this advertisement for this property does it say that the shower was over the spa is very hard to rate this property favorably...we had gone to Smiths Lake for a funeral and we were going to have children stay but the place was not clean enough to allow this to happen...workman tools and power leads scattered around the balcony (electric saw and saw blades)....the pots in the cupboards were very dirty especially the casserole pot...( I also bought one in town) I would not use them...the stove looked like it had never been cleaned...very disappointing indeed I was embarrassed that

the place was so unclean...I would never book here again

Owner's Response: Dear Guests, we apologize for the inconvenience. We have a fulltime cleaner, Gardner and at the time of your booking we have been advised that the fence replacement was completed (electric tools etc). Smitties is rented out on a regular basis and we did not have any complaints so far. We will take your feedback up with the above people and ask for immediate additional cleaning and improvements to be carried out. We have not been aware of your husbands knee replacement and therefore could not have advised you about the shower/bathtub details Best regards

We had a lovely stay at Smitties on the weekend. I was thrilled to see your painting of the Indian Chief in the hallway. My husband is of North American Indian descent & I have done alot of research on his family tree. The girls named the Indian "Mariah" due to the wind & rain we had during our stay & we all thanked him for watching over us & said our goodbye's to him on departure. Thanks again for letting us stay at your home & we hope to return again. Bless you & your home

Thank you on behalf of myself and my family for letting us stay at your beautiful holiday house at Smith's Lake. My parents, who NEVER go on holiday, loved it and were converted. The place was very tastefully decorated and we enjoyed the scenic drive. It was a great way to spend xmas day and the weekend.

I have spent fantastic weekend escapes / holidays in Johanna and Peters spectacular holiday home. Love absolutely everything about the house, garden and nature surrounding it.Waking up in the morning with the sun shining and birds singing, following on with breakfast in the wicked garden, then relaxing all day long at one of the many beaches, go for a stroll in Forster watching the dolphins & return for sunset to have a drink on the terrace followed by a romantic dinner.Wish I could go there every weekend to return totally relaxed back to work on Mondays.Tanja
