This house sits directly on the New River and has 42 acres on the N.C. and Virginia state lines. Winter at its best, cross country skiing, cozy and wonderful fireplace .The New River, which predates the Ice Age is at its widest part here over 300 ft. wide and is quite different from the nearby Little River, which indeed is little. The house is so close to the river you can throw a rock into it. In the summer it is 15-20 degrees cooler than the rest of the Southern Appalachian Mountains, ie Asheville, N.C since it gets its weather pattern from Canada rather than the South . . Stroll the grassy river walk alongside the New River. CREDIT CARDS ACCEPTED. Hike miles of trails through open meadows and forested hillsides. Savor ridge top views of farmland stretching into distant mountains. Enjoy the weather, typically 15-20 degrees cooler than the Piedmont area in the summer.Close to music festivals, the Blue Ridge Parkway with the historic New River in the front yard. Or just kick back on the porch, listen to the tinkling brook that runs directly beneath the open-air deck with its soaring cathedral ceiling, and watch the sun go down over the river. In the Fall enjoy a roaring fire and very comfortable furniture in jewel of a cabin. This new new, two-story, post-and-beam house sits on 43 pristine acres of grassland and woods, directly overlooking the New River, the oldest river in the Western Hemisphere. Though relatively compact at 1,500 square feet, the house has five distinct sleeping areas, including two generous bedrooms, each with a queen-sized bed; a charming children's alcove with big inflatable air bed; a living room (with stacked-stone fireplace) overlooking the river, that is furnished with a large convertible sofa and large futon; and finally, two adjoining side and front porches and decks (where the futon can be re-located in mild weather for a cozy night's sleep under the deck's cathedral ceiling, or onto the porch beneath the stars).
The modern kitchen with built-in island has windows overlooking the raspberry patch and wood ferns in back of the house; separate dining room overlooks the river. Both the house and its kitchen are fully furnished and linens are provided.
Outside, the immediate surrounds are lushly landscaped with willows, raspberry bushes, silky dogwoods, and roses. Beyond, on three sides, pastures and wooded hillsides studded with striking rocky outcroppings and caves are home to abundant wildlife including geese, hawks, deer, wild turkey, fox, and beavers. Ridgetop views stretch across picturesque farmland leading to distant mountains.
Perfect for families, individuals, or small groups wanting to get away from it all; yet the spacious setting and privacy provides a congenial site for small weddings and reunions.
Ten miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway, the property straddles the NC and VA state line, about 30 miles north of I-77 on U.S. Hwy. 21. Neighboring settlements within driving distance include little Sparta, NC (good groceries and a handful of restaurants), and tiny Independence, VA (quaint courthouse, compact downtown good for an afternoon stroll).
Come for a quiet, peaceful retreat, or, if you prefer, get active and hike, fish, canoe or kayak the river; in warm weather, you'll want to go tubing and swimming in the clear cold water. The Blue Ridge Parkway and several gorgeous state parks are easy drives. Blue-grass festivals and local artists abound; junk stores and antiquing are there for those so inclined; and some very fine potters, especially, have set up shop in bohemian-style settlements nestled in the rolling farmland outside Sparta.

We had a great time at he cabin. Well taken care of, beautiful location and well stocked with what we needed. Thank you for such a wonderful place.
We will be back! Customer service was top notch, with a guest-first attitude and quick replies. It's easy to see that the owners love this place and sharing it with guests. Accommodations were immaculately clean and simply tough to beat, as was the setting. Spent lots of time by the fireplace and on covered deck area. Saw an eagle swimming upriver. The brook alongside the house is the best white noise out there, not that it's necessary-- there's no highway noise. Very peaceful. Can't say enough how pleased we were with this experience. Great for 2 couples. Nice to have the town of Sparta within a 10-15 min drive for groceries and beverages. We were looking for something closer to the Creeper Trail, but I'm glad we didn't find it-- this was a worthwhile destination in its own right, for those looking to unwind. Know before you go: the gravel driveway gets pretty steep as it approaches the house and seems doable with a regular car, but I'm glad we had an SUV. If no SUV, no problem (see: pictures of Prius at house)-- there's also a parking area at the bottom of the hill. Also, there's a security deposit not mentioned on the VRBO listing that we had no issues with. Cell reception is non-existent for ATT and minimal with Sprint, even in Sparta, but GPS still worked if downloaded beforehand, wifi worked fine, and house has a land line. Also- read the house information that the owner sends you so you know a) how to get into the house and b) how to turn off the home security alarm. ...still picturing this place/experience...
A beautiful place to stay. We really enjoyed everything about it. Buck was very accommodating during our stay there.
This was just great! It was quiet, cooler than home, and very relaxing! Home was great, very clean, neat and the fabulous porch was a great place for our 4 lb dog to play. Great large yard to watch the water. Canoeing 5 minutes away which was wonderful. 42 acres to discover. We saw deer, rabbit and wild turkey. This is also about an hour from Mt. Airy and Boone. We will definitely want to go back in the future.
We truly enjoyed our stay at this beautiful place. Everything was perfect. The house had everything you could possibly need. The views were amazing. The only thing negative was that we had to leave :(
The owner was so responsive and easy to work with. We will definitely stay here again!!!!
What a wonderful relaxing family Wedding weekend! We we're so relaxed and felt so comfortable here. Beautiful views, plenty of room. Highly recommend this place and the owners are very nice & accomodating! Since family lives near by, we will most likely be back.
