About the property

The Owl Pen is a spacious two bedroom cottage, which sleeps 2 -4 guests

Rydal is a quaint little village just beyond the Blue Mountains which was named after the English village of Rydal where the poet William Wordsworth lived for many years. For two weekends in September, Rydal hosts a daffodil festival to raise funds for local charities.

Garden lovers, birdwatchers, artists and photographers will be inspired by this picturesque setting.

The surrounding native bush provides lovely walks and bike rides. Try your hand at trout fishing or canoeing in nearby Lake Lyell and Lake Wallace, or four (4) wheeling driving in the nearby forest, alternatively take a leisurely drive to a local cafe or country pub for lunch.

The Owl Pen Cottage was built in 1832 as a kitchen for the historic Queen Victoria Inn, and was situated on the Cobb and Co route to Bathurst.

Today, it is surrounded by 9 acres of cool climate garden with two ornamental lakes, which are home to the resident geese and ducks. The expansive garden changes with the seasons and has been featured in several magazines including Country Style, Australian Country, Central West Lifestyle, Australia Garden Clubs Magazine and Burkes Backyard Magazine and TV.

It is the perfect location to explore the towns of Bathurst, Orange and Mudgee local markets, (wineries, galleries etc) and only 40 minutes from the gorgeous village of Leura and the attractions of the Blue Mountains.

Come and enjoy the peace and tranquility of this very special place.

We are pet friendly with some conditions (please consult with owners).

The train from Sydney comes through Rydal at 10am each day, arrangements can be made to collect visitors from the Station (it departs at 6 pm each evening).

We absolutely would recommend this property to anyone looking for a fairy tale experience: the gardens are dreamy, the geese are amusing, the rabbits dart hither and dither. The cottage itself is charming and well looked after.

Cosy Cottage

A very well appointed cottage perfect for our last minute getaway exploring the Blue Mountains & Orange.

This is a beautiful little retreat amongst stunning gardens worth visiting any time of the year. A nice surprise was the huge selection of teas & coffees in the pantry.

Stunning property

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the beautiful Owl Pen. The manicured gardens are a lovely setting for this cottage. We could have comfortably stayed a week here to recoup and relax before going back to reality. I would highly recommend this property.

A perfect country retreat!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I were very impressed with all aspects of our stay. Communication with Jo was easy and efficient, arrangements for payment and directions to the property were clear. The Owlpen is an absolutely charming and historically interesting cottage on a beautiful country property that boasts gorgeous gardens, a lovely pond, magnificent trees and a wide variety of shrubs and flowers. We were lucky enough to visit during daffodil season and were amazed by the thousands of daffodils in bloom. The cottage itself is very warm and comfortable. Plenty of heating options including gas, electric and slow combustion wood fire made every room warm and cosy on a very cold weekend. The beds are very comfy and made up with lovely linens, blankets and quilts. The three lounges in the sitting room allow everyone to thoroughly relax. The kitchen is very well equipped with oven, cooktop, dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker... the list goes on. A very well stocked pantry provided all the essentials for cooking but if you don't feel like rattling those pots and pans the local pub in Rydal is a short drive away and serves decent pub food. I highly recommend the

Owlpen for a quiet weekend getaway.

A beautiful cottage in an amazing setting

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time. The cottage had everything we could have hoped for and plenty of unexpected extras including comfy robes, a well stocked pantry, toiletry items and food treats. The cottage is beautifully decorated and so warm with gas heating if needed in addition to the fireplace which includes an abundance of wood. We had brunch by the pond, relaxing walks through the property and great chats by the fire. The setting is stunning, even in winter. I can't imagine how beautiful it must be in spring! We'll definitely be back.
