Overview

About the property

5 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath, sleeps up to 14 people

Privacy & nature. Lots of walking paths on many acres of land. Although it is secluded, you are only 2 miles from town.

The house used to be a late 1700's tavern for the settlers of the area to get a meal and room to sleep the night while traveling the Hinman Settlers Road.

Barton Vermont - Lots to do and see!: The house is located just outside of Barton and 1/4 mile from the Orleans County Fairgrounds. Barton has many cultural and natural activities. Crystal Lake is in Town and is known for boating, fishing, swimming, kayaking and has a State maintained beach area. There are about 7 lakes in the area to choose from. There are many farm stands to purchase fresh vegetables and fruits along with visits to dairy farms if you like. There is a golf course in town, a good sized grocery store and lots of nice people. Jay Peak and Burke Mountains for skiing are within 30 miles. Vast snow machine trails are with 1/2 mile away from the house. There is too much to mention -come and visit and I'm sure you will return.

The house is absolutely beautiful !!

  • 5 of 5

I wanted to say that this was the most beautiful property ever. The surrounding view of the mountains and woods was just breath taking. We rented this property with our family during Christmas time, and I have to say it was the best time of our lives . We went sledding , the kids went ice skating on the nearby pond that was on the property. We cooked and made a bond fire outside( there is a specific area for that on the property). The house was clean, it had all the essentials that you needed. The bathroom upstairs had a large jetted bathtub the kids and adults loved using it! They also have a laundry room which was perfect because we were able to do our laundry through out the week. The owner Gail was quick to respond if we needed anything, she was doing everything above and beyond for us, and we appreciated that. Our family is still talking about this wonderful experience ! Thank you Gail!!

Very Accommodating

  • 4 of 5

Our family had a great experience at the Barton house, and the layout accommodated us well. It is true that everything you might need in a kitchen seems to be there! The beds and pillows were comfortable, and there were enough blankets and clean towels for all of us. The two sofas in the living room were a little more roomy than the impression we'd had from the website, so that was nice. Putting two chairs on each end of the dining table, and a booster seat on another chair for the baby, allowed for 10 people seated at the table. There are also 3 picnic tables outside, (and a small patio with patio furniture behind the house). It was a little challenging figuring out where the tableware and plates were, as they were more so in the dining area, rather than in more intuitive spots -- but once we realized, we found plenty of necessary items. We made smores around the small firepit twice, and did plenty of stargazing in that remarkable night sky. While Barton house, and Barton, are definitely in a very rural part of VT, We found the ride to C&C market in Barton to be very convenient...(5-10 min)., and they had everything we needed through the week. Parson's House coffee shop in Barton was also a nice stop for fabulous coffee and great sandwiches. The ride to Crystal lake was also only about 10 min. or so, although we preferred driving a bit further to the Lake Willoughby area where there are several mountain hikes to experience, and some awesome Giffords brand ice cream at Willoughby Lake Store/Millbrook's. The Barton house has a nice small pond which our small children enjoyed with grandpa in the paddleboat; and due to the large field behind the house it looks like it would be a great spot for sledding in the winter. Finally, Gail was super friendly, and that made our experience especially nice. Thank you much!

Repeat visit to the NEK

  • 5 of 5

This past weekend I had my second stay at this house. Like the previous time, Gail was a great host. She was accommodating to our early arrival and the house was perfect. Last time we were here was the middle of summer and this the middle of winter, the house was exactly what we wanted for either season.

A nice break in VT

  • 5 of 5

The house was really clean, the kitchen has all the amenities you'll need and the beds were cozy with their flannel sheets. Craftsbury is only 40 minutes away for cross country skiing and Jay Peak is 45 minutes for downhill. Lots of hiking nearby, too. Of course, pizza from Parker's Pies, just two miles away is a must. The house had all you need for a relaxing holiday.

Owner's Response: Glad to hear you liked the house, and the location! Parker Pie is a very popular spot with the great pizza and the wide variety of local micro brewery beer selection. Hope you come and visit us again!

Great Stay!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I were extremely happy with our stay at Gail's "Barton House". We totaled 8 adults, 6 children, and 2 dogs. We all had plenty of room and were very comfortable. House was fully stocked which included toys for kids, a paddle boat, large BBQ, fire pit, and so much more. My wife and I were amazed that the TV was not turned on once. The house was very clean and accommodating. Our only regret was that we couldn't stay longer!

A home away from home!

  • 5 of 5

What a beautiful and comfortable house. 8 of us stayed in Barton and enjoyed the house and the local area. Communication with Gail was quick and pleasant and she was very willing to make things even more convenient for us. The beds were plentiful and comfortable. Would stay there again. Breakfast and Parsons and lunch at Parker Pie along with beer at Hill Farmstead. What a great stay!

Car: recommended

This house is in an ideal location with lots of privacy but only 2 miles from town. There are lots of wildlife that cross or live on the property. Our property adjoins another 250 acre property that is basically undeveloped. Barton is a small town, but provides all the basic needs a person could want. There are two banks, a post office, pharmacy, restaurants, a mini mart/gas station, 2 auto service locations, a hardware store, public library and a good size grocery store. Another popular attraction is the Hill Farmstead Brewery which is world renowned for it's micro brewery beers - only 14 miles away.

Other Activities: We have a man made pond on site with a paddle boat for guests to use - free of charge. The Northeast Kingdom is canoe and kayak heaven. There are so many lakes, rivers and steams to paddle on that it is hard to choose. The scenery is magnificent and the waters clean.

Golf: There are several golf courses in the area with the first one being right in Barton. It has beautiful scenery while you golf being on a high spot on Telfer Hill. Orleans golf course is only 9 miles away with club house and restaurant on site. Newport & St. Johnsbury also have nice golf courses only about 20 minutes in either direction.

Ski: We are centrally located between 3 major ski areas. Burke Ski Area is the closest at 22 miles away and is very family friendly. Jay Peak is 33 miles away and boasts the most natural snowfall and has indoor skating and indoor water park. Stowe Mountain Resort is 53 miles south of us and also has an Alpine slide in summer.
