About Carolyn Dailey
I love the beauty of nature and other cultures! Once a professionaI, I was a college administrator and school program evaluator and have a masters degree in Experimental Psychology. But I retired at an early age to become a full-time artist and international traveler. In 1985-86 I took a 13 month trip by myself around the world. I went everywhere I ever dreamed of and it changed my life. The USA seemed so blah afterwards. I wondered what it would be like to live in another country and not just visit. When I visited Guatemala in 1987 it reminded me of my favorite country from my trip - Nepal - with the steep terraced fields, misty mountains, and colorful people. I feel in love with it and returned to paint, trading houses with a friend for 7 months in 1990. I came back again the next year to paint some more paintings for a Guatemala show and it led me to move there and buy my gorgeous house. I paint in the plein air outdoor landscape tradition using oils and occasionally watercolor. My paintings have been in shows and galleries both in the Southwest USA and in Guatemala where I lived for 16 years and still maintain this residence. Among my accomplishments, In 1999 I had a one-woman show at the Ixchel Museum in Guatemala City. The house is decorated with some of my work. I returned to live in the USA in 2006 and now reside in Moab, Utah - another beautiful place. But my heart is still in Guatemala and I plan to return to live there again someday.
Carolyn Dailey purchased this House in 1993
Why Carolyn Dailey chose Panajachel
My house is a very special older property built in the early 1970's by a gringo. The house itself has been remodeled over the years since I have owned it so that only the walls are still the same and even they have new stucco and paint! The house has all the modern conveniences with an artistic style. The outstanding feature of the property is the large, very magical garden and forested hillside towering above. It is secluded, private, secure and very quiet for Panajachel - my own private sanctuary just a few minutes from the bustle of town.
What makes this House unique
Last year I remodeled and refurbished the house in a high-end contemporary style with a Guatemalan influence. It has the comfort and luxury of the states with the charm and beauty of Guatemala. The sky lights and high ceiling make it feel spacious and bright. The colorful decor of original art and antiques, Mexican bathroom tiles and sink, and lots of wood in the windows, doors and ceiling give it charming inner warmth. Handmade Guatemalan wooden furniture, hand woven textiles are combined with a contemporary furniture creating a very special decor. I love how the windows all open into the gardens giving an indoor-outdoor connection. A unique feature is the traditional Mayan wood-fired sauna, also newly remodeled, with a new wooden bench, heating system and outdoor cold shower. Casa Carolina is a one of a kind property in Panajachel, It is perfect for a couple, or a couple with a child or friend along. Our Guatemalan staff is available to serve you.

Tropical oasis close to buzzing Panajachel
We were in Panajachel for three very active days. All four of us, two adult and two teens, were happy to retreat in a quiet neighborhood for the evenings. The propriety is surrounded by a beautifully and well maintained tropical garden, with several seating area to relax and contemplate. The house offers all the confort and amenities necessary to prepare our meals and feel at home. The housekeeper and the manager were presents when needed, this made us feel welcomed and safe. Carolyn was always quick to respond to our questions and you can tell that she care about her guests.
Overall, we loved our stay and really enjoy the calm retreat.
Thank you, Danielle, for your appreciative comments. I am delighted that you and your family enjoyed your stay at my Casa Carolina! We do try our best to make it a beautiful, peaceful and welcome refuge from the bustle of downtown Panajachel. And you are correct that I and my staff genuinely do care about our guests and try our best to please! I hope you can come stay with us again - you always will be very welcome!
Still one of the best places to stay at the lake
Casa Carolyna never fails to impress. House and gardens are well maintained, clean and comfortably furnished. Kitchen has everything you need to cook your meals. Unlike many houses for rent in the area, there is an actual bathtub and there is plentiful hot water. The host, Carolyna, lives in the US but she is responsive and accommodating in case any issue or question comes up. All in all, a good value for the money. Highly recommended!

Best place to stay at the lake
Beauty - convenience - security..... this place has it all.....have been visiting Panajachel for 7 years and this is the best place I have found. It's located in a beautiful tranquil walled garden in a quiet enclave away from hustle and bustle of Calle Santander. It's well-furnished, clean, has a great kitchen, plenty of hot water and even a wood-fired sauna. The owner Carolina and the property manager Carmelina are attentive and helpful. Will definitely be staying here again on my next visit. Highly recommended!
Panajachel is the largest of 11 traditional Mayan villages on the mystical Lake Atitlan which lies in an ancient volcanic caldera in the Western Highlands of Guatemala. The lake is huge and over 2000' deep. But the people are what make it so special. Stepping out of my doorway is like walking into National Geographic. Mayan people pass by in their colorful traditional dress called "traje", often carrying baskets or firewood on their heads, walking or riding a bicycle to school, work or the market. Panajachel has an interesting old Catholic Cathedral, a vibrant fruit and vegetable market, regular grocery stores, a multitude of restaurants and shops selling Guatemalan handicrafts along colorful Santander Street, and tuk-tuks that can take you any where for 5 quetzales per person, about 75 cents. Boats leave from two different areas along a waterfront of docks, walkways and restaurants and shops to villages across the lake. I recommend an all day boat tour that takes you to San Pedro, Santiago, and San Antonio so you can get out on the lake and visit a variety of the villages.
