One of our favorite winter traditions is cutting down our Christmas tree at one of the beautiful tree farms near Boulder Creek.

Our house: We first saw our house in the winter rains and were instantly charmed. It is a cozy retreat in the redwoods, and it has been lovingly maintained and decorated for our family and friends' use. It was exclusively our family's weekend and holiday retreat for seven years before we began sharing it with others via HomeAway and VRBO. Our family has had countless special times there with our children, friends, and visiting relatives. It isn't just another rental house - the rocking chair is the one Grandma Linda rocked all her children in, the rugs have been in the family for 40 years, and so on. We are very happy to share the house with others and have been thrilled that so many guests have discovered the Santa Cruz mountains while visiting.

Boulder Creek: Boulder Creek is a vintage small town - it has one stop sign! It's the town closest to Big Basin Redwood State Park, so most visitors go to Boulder Creek on their way to take walks or hikes in the old-growth redwoods. Even though Boulder Creek is very small, there are two grocery stores - one Safeway-like, the other more similar to Whole Foods. There are also several restaurants, some great coffee places, a brewery, a couple of fun antique stores & thrift stores, a pharmacy a tea room, and a few places to get wonderful massages/facials. One of our favorite outings (and our dog's!) is a ride on Roaring Camp & Big Trees Narrow-Gauge Railroad - we ride the steam train up to old-growth redwoods at Bear Mountain, followed by a hike among more amazing old-growth redwoods at Henry Cowell State Park (right next door). We also love to spend the afternoon exploring the river and river-beaches and berry picking. Several guests have gone zip-lining at nearby Mount Hermon's Redwood Canopy Tours...we've heard it's wonderful! Visiting some local wineries is another favorite way to spend an afternoon with friends.

About Suzanne Koch

We first saw our house in the winter rains and were instantly charmed. It is a cozy retreat in the redwoods, and it has been lovingly maintained and decorated for our family and friends' use. It has been exclusively our family's weekend and holiday retreat for the past seven years. We've had countless special times there with our children, friends, and visiting relatives. It isn't just another rental house - the rocking chair is the one Grandma Linda rocked all her children in, the rugs have been in the family for 40 years, and so on. We are very happy to share the house with others and have been thrilled that so many guests have discovered the Santa Cruz Mountains while visiting.

Why Suzanne Koch chose Santa Cruz County

We loved the magnificent redwoods all around, including our own 'Fairy Ring,' and only 25 minutes down the hill to the beaches.

Wonderful cabin in the Santa Cruz mountains

  • 5 of 5

We loved the cabin. Very accessible along CA 9 and yet close to Henry Cowell and Big Basin. We did some great hikes. The cabin is very nice with two bedrooms plus a small "in-laws" that just fitted a king sized bed. The patio with a BBQ grill and a firepit is a nice addition. We rate it highly and certainly want to come back.

Fantastic!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had a very small wedding reception in this home. We also stayed here for the rest of our honeymoon as well. It rained for three days and it was SO beautiful! There was a little creek flowing by the deck and we would sleep with the windows open at night to hear the rainfall. The kitchen was AMAZING! Great for family cooking in there. My mother stayed with us the first couple of nights and just loved the jacuzzi. The owners were great to work with. They sent us detailed instructions on how to get there, because the driveway is a little hard to find. They also sent us with a list of things to do in the area, which was very helpful due to this being our first trip to the redwoods. We loved our trip and our stay and hope to return sometime next year. They are also PET friendly. Our little doggy stayed with us for two nights!

Great remote location

  • 5 of 5

Cozy private premises, my favorite part was the outdoors setting with BBQ porch area, deck and woodsy environment. The owners were very informative and so easy to work with, thank you! The only down side if any is that house is literally off the highway in a curvy area and up a steep driveway so you have to be very cautious with traffic. The house itself is very welcoming, it might seem crowded for a larger group but that adds to the opportunity of spending quality time away from home with good company.

Dreamy forest getaway

  • 5 of 5

Suzanne is amazing. She's such a responsive , hospitable host. She gave us wonderful, clear details about her home, which also included great spots to check out nearby. The house was such an ideal relaxation spot for all of us. It was me and 4 other friends, and we had plenty of space to have down time to read - and then spend time together. Everything about this place is so serene. We mostly cooked at the house, because we loved the outdoor table and then hopping in the hot tub. Definitely want to come back and spend a good week here. Very close to Santa Cruz and Big Basin Redwoods too. Perfect!

We really enjoyed our stay at this wonderful retreat...

  • 5 of 5

...we live in the City and, for us, this was definitely a retreat away from the noise and traffic, etc.

The ambience is delightful! When you walk in the front door for the first time, the cozy, clean interior makes you feel right at home, and there is a wonderful private fenced yard, deck and hot tub just outside. There is almost everything one needs for a comfortable, relaxing home away from home stay, including plenty of towels and dishes, books, movies -- and the beds are comfy too! There is even a Roku TV in the living room which we enjoyed in the evenings after dinner and a relaxing hot tub.

Suzanne was so helpful and communicative and even gave us great alternative directions to get there to avoid the Santa Cruz traffic so the drive was beautiful and stress free. And, within minutes of the house, there is the amazing and beautiful Henry Cowell Redwood State Park (in Felton) which we explored fully. There is a wonderful Farmer's Market nearby if you are fortunate enough to be there on a Tuesday afternoon, and also a Safeway within minutes.

We are already planning for and looking forward to our next stay which, hopefully, will be very soon!!

Amazing mountain house!

  • 5 of 5

We loved the Santa Cruz Mountain House! It was like living in a tree house in the Redwood Forest!

The owners provide much of what you need to make your stay easy and enjoyable! The house is clean and very well set up for a cozy and relaxing stay.

The house is very accessible to lots of activities in the area with small, quaint towns along the way.

We will definitely try to stay there again!

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your lovely comments, Kathy! I hope to have you all back again soon. We're remodeling the kitchen later in the summer, so the house will be even better for cooking on your next stay! :-) Take care, Suzanne

Notes:
Enjoy your own private Redwoods 'Fairy Ring' with a large family hammock strung across the grove halfway up the hill above the main house. The sky is crystal clear at night, and the stars shimmer above the outdoor fire pit or the beautiful outdoor hot tub. The hot tub is the traditional California style-- a large round (84') wood hot tub with bench seating and dozens of hydrotherapy jets. The house has two decks. The front deck with a cozy table and umbrella, seating four. The large back deck overlooks a stream and waterfall (in the rainy season) with a redwood table seating eight, two rocking chairs, and an outdoor gas grill.
