One of our favorite winter traditions is cutting down our Christmas tree at one of the beautiful tree farms near Boulder Creek.
Our house: We first saw our house in the winter rains and were instantly charmed. It is a cozy retreat in the redwoods, and it has been lovingly maintained and decorated for our family and friends' use. It was exclusively our family's weekend and holiday retreat for seven years before we began sharing it with others via HomeAway and VRBO. Our family has had countless special times there with our children, friends, and visiting relatives. It isn't just another rental house - the rocking chair is the one Grandma Linda rocked all her children in, the rugs have been in the family for 40 years, and so on. We are very happy to share the house with others and have been thrilled that so many guests have discovered the Santa Cruz mountains while visiting.
Boulder Creek: Boulder Creek is a vintage small town - it has one stop sign! It's the town closest to Big Basin Redwood State Park, so most visitors go to Boulder Creek on their way to take walks or hikes in the old-growth redwoods. Even though Boulder Creek is very small, there are two grocery stores - one Safeway-like, the other more similar to Whole Foods. There are also several restaurants, some great coffee places, a brewery, a couple of fun antique stores & thrift stores, a pharmacy a tea room, and a few places to get wonderful massages/facials. One of our favorite outings (and our dog's!) is a ride on Roaring Camp & Big Trees Narrow-Gauge Railroad - we ride the steam train up to old-growth redwoods at Bear Mountain, followed by a hike among more amazing old-growth redwoods at Henry Cowell State Park (right next door). We also love to spend the afternoon exploring the river and river-beaches and berry picking. Several guests have gone zip-lining at nearby Mount Hermon's Redwood Canopy Tours...we've heard it's wonderful! Visiting some local wineries is another favorite way to spend an afternoon with friends.

Suzanne Koch purchased this house in 2004
We loved the magnificent redwoods all around, including our own 'Fairy Ring,' and only 25 minutes down the hill to the beaches.
"Thank you for making your fantastic cabin available for me, the kids, and grandpa. A perfect multi-generational setting! I especially appreciated your detailed instructions and activity suggestions. It made for a terrific vacation.
You have a very special place here in the Santa Cruz mountains. I hope to be able to return sometime. Thank you very much!"
...we live in the City and, for us, this was definitely a retreat away from the noise and traffic, etc.
The ambience is delightful! When you walk in the front door for the first time, the cozy, clean interior makes you feel right at home, and there is a wonderful private fenced yard, deck and hot tub just outside. There is almost everything one needs for a comfortable, relaxing home away from home stay, including plenty of towels and dishes, books, movies -- and the beds are comfy too! There is even a Roku TV in the living room which we enjoyed in the evenings after dinner and a relaxing hot tub.
Suzanne was so helpful and communicative and even gave us great alternative directions to get there to avoid the Santa Cruz traffic so the drive was beautiful and stress free. And, within minutes of the house, there is the amazing and beautiful Henry Cowell Redwood State Park (in Felton) which we explored fully. There is a wonderful Farmer's Market nearby if you are fortunate enough to be there on a Tuesday afternoon, and also a Safeway within minutes.
We are already planning for and looking forward to our next stay which, hopefully, will be very soon!!
We loved the Santa Cruz Mountain House! It was like living in a tree house in the Redwood Forest!
The owners provide much of what you need to make your stay easy and enjoyable! The house is clean and very well set up for a cozy and relaxing stay.
The house is very accessible to lots of activities in the area with small, quaint towns along the way.
We will definitely try to stay there again!
Our family really enjoyed staying at this mountain cottage in Boulder Creek. The location is perfect. It is about a 20 minute drive to Santa Cruz where you can enjoy the beach. We really loved being in the redwoods. The cottage has a hot tub in the back and a really relaxing hammock. The home is super cute. It has all the items you would need to enjoy a fun family vacation. My kids liked the bunk beds, various toys, games, and of course the game cube video games. My in-laws drove out from Kansas to meet us here for a vacation and they enjoyed staying in the small cabin that is beside the cottage. I highly recommend this vacation home. The owners are quick to respond and very friendly.
We loved this property! It was absolutely perfect for down-time after a day at the Boardwalk with the kids. It was nice to spend the day at the very busy Beach and Boardwalk, but heavenly to drive into the relaxed atmosphere of Boulder Creek and experience the Mountain House. Such a diverse experience. We cooked breakfast, prepared lunches to go and BBQed dinner to save our money for all of the rides. The hot tub in the Redwoods trees was a huge plus. Thank you for a perfect place to spend the weekend!
When we pulled in Sunday afternoon I imagine it was much like you described when you first found this cabin. It was raining and we too were instantly charmed. The setting is gorgeous and the inside of your cabin is cozy, charming and welcoming. Our week together there was simply amazing. We played games, sat in the hot tub, had dinner on the deck under the trees, had fires in the fire pit (with s'mores of course), watched movies and explored the area. The extra little cabin was perfect for our 2 teenagers! It was the perfect spring break for us and we all agreed we'd love to return. The cabin was perfectly stocked with everything we needed and far more. All communication with Suzanne was seamless and quick. Your directions for everything in the cabin answered every question we encountered. The binder full of restaurants, hikes, spots of interest, etc was very helpful as well. And, the bed in the main bedroom was very comfy, I slept great which is not always easy away from home! :)
Other Activities: Old-growth redwood forests, Santa Cruz beaches & Boardwalk, Roaring Camp & Big Trees Narrow Gauge Railroad, wine tasting at spectacular wineries, hiking & hanging out on river beaches, Santa Cruz Mystery Spot! We love taking the Roaring Camp train to the SC Boardwalk (an ocean-side amusement park) in the summer.
Golf: Boulder Creek Golf & Country Club has outstanding golf with gorgeous Redwood forest mountain views
