About Bob Vaughan
We have lived in Florida and Costa Rica our whole lives. We are 3rd generation Floridians. The property in Costa Rica was purchased in 1978 and we used it for Ornamental plant production the last 34 years to supply our nursery operation in Florida. The house on the farm sits on approx 300 acres of land. Over 260 acres of this is secondary rainforest protected in a program we decided to join to keep the natural bird corridor open from the National Park, through our property ,and down to the coast. We have always loved taking friends down to Costa Rica and showing them the beauty of the country and our area. We wanted to expand our vision of having people know Costa Rica, our zone, and our property more intimately. To do this we thought of renting our private home in one of the most spectacular locations I could think of. We have traveled the world and still feel this is one of the hidden gems we've kept secret for along time. But now ,with a 17 station zipline located in the jungle on the property, a class 3-4 river running right behind the house for rafting, and all the other beautiful sights, it's time to let in the rest of the world to see what they have been missing. Please join us in an adventure of a lifetime, that we have enjoyed for a lifetime. It's time to open the gates of Hacienda La Linda for all the world to see! 407 718 6000

Why Bob Vaughan chose Bajos de Chilamate
This is the home that sits on a working plant farm. We have chosen to remodel the house and surrounding area to be utilized by people who want to see all that the outdoors has to offer in Costa Rica, and have an adventure of a lifetime. The tours, the animals, the people, the location, is unrivaled for adventure and relaxation. Everything you need is right out the front door on the property.

Rustic yes, could be charming
Upon arrival there were fresh tropic flowers in every room which was a very nice touch. Marlyn was helpful and a nice gal. After settling in a bit, we noticed the stains and tears on the linens. The linens could also be a better quality. After removing the pillow cases to wash them, we were uneasy about using them as they appeared to be molding and dirty. Also, every night we had to brush off the termite dropping on the bed before we went to sleep. If you notice little brown things on bathroom floor, it is just termite droppings. We found dead bugs and heavy dust. We washed the kitchen towels prior to use due to lizard droppings and dirt. The first night a hose broke in the bathroom, which Marlyn was on the spot to fix. The house is very dark, however, it could be lighter if the burnt out light bulbs were replaced and the existing ones cleaned. The refrigerator has some sort of problem of water pooling on the top shelf. We just kept a towel in it. We washed the dishes before use as they were not all clean. We found trash behind the wastebasket when we emptied our trash. Be careful on the porch, as some of railings are loose. The second bedroom window has a tear in screen. Many holes and cracks allowing the outside elements access to inside. The outside downstairs bedroom is actually a small room with a bed. To advertise as a 3 bedroom is a big stretch. Perhaps it was storage previously. Keep in mind there is no TV, oven, microwave, hair dryer or glass windows and not many hangers in closet. We are caretakers for 2 condos listed on VRBO so we anticipated more attention to the maintenance and details of the house for the price.
The view on back porch is special. You can see a lot of birds. We saw one tuncan, heard the monkeys, did not see any on property. Ziplining and rafting was fun, the guides are awesome. Marlyn told us we received a discount for staying at LaLinda. She would arrange, pay her in cash as ‘we do not have a credit card machine for the moment’. We found later that we paid the regular price and they do have credit card machine at their office.
You have to go the Mexican Soda in town, the food is awesome and one of the owners speaks English which is a bonus. The LaPaz Waterfall Gardens is a small zoo with walkway to see 4 waterfalls. You can see the biggest waterfall on main road. Not worth the cost.
Wonderful place to stay
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The house was large, clean and comfortable. We appreciated each having our own bathroom. We especially loved being serenaded at night by the frogs and crickets, and being awoken by birdsong and the howler monkeys who were in the trees really close by. We saw a toucan and a pair of macaws! We cooled our feet in the Saranqui River, where we also watched many white water rafters float by.
We arrived late and without any groceries due to unexpected car trouble. Marlyn made us a delicious breakfast in the morning and drove us to the grocery store later in the day. She grew up in the area, is obviously passionate about it, and is a wealth of information, which she generously shares. She gave us a very informative, interesting tour of the black pepper production done right on the property.
We would highly recommend this place. It has things to do for the adventurous as well as the nature lover.
We are sorry you had car problems but glad that Marlyn was there to help out. We are glad you got to enjoy what a special place La Linda is and hope you tell your friends of your experience and come back soon.
Rustic plantation style beauty
This place is exactly how they describe it, "rustic, charming farmhouse". It sits on a gorgeous piece of property right on the Sarapiqui River. We had howler monkeys, toucans, poison dart frogs and numerous other birds and creatures right by the house. It was like our own personal jungle. The house is huge and you really feel as if you stepped back in time 100 years, except you have fully functioning bathrooms and a full kitchen. Our family of five had tons of room to spread out and relax. We did not even need to use the third bedroom. Marlyn was beyond helpful and a real sweet lady. The house does not have a glass windows though, just screens and security bars (as does most of Costa Rica) so you will hear all of the jungle noises at night, including the howler monkeys and the rushing river. We LOVED that about it, but I could see how some might not. Also, the property is actually on Route 126 not Route 4 (maybe OLD Route 4?). It is south of Route 4 about 1.5 km after you turn south onto 126. We would definitely stay here again.
Idyllic setting in a convenient secure location
This place has much rustic charm. It is large enough to provide room for six comfortably. The location is close enough to Juan Santamaria airport to be easily accessible yet far from all the hustle and bustle of a big city. If you travel to La Virgen via the Poas Volcano road you can make stops at the volcano and La Paz Waterfall Gardens on the way. You can take a zip line or raft trip right from the property, at the time of this writing, there are only seven zip line stations available. The river view from the back porch is great and there is plenty of bird activity to enjoy. The very charming young lady who manages the place does a terrific job of cleaning and preparing the house for guests, she speaks excellent English, can arrange activities and cook a great meal for the guests if they so desire. Also, she can give you a personalized tour of the property which is quite interesting. A word of warning, you have to access the house via the stairs that are in the picture, I would not recommend this property to anyone who has difficulty in safely climbing stairs. Now for the issue: The owner lists internet not once but twice in his amenities information. There is no internet! This is a major frustration to us when owners simply do not provide correct information on their listing. We use the internet for doing our required business activities in the US, staying in contact with our families and planning our area excursions. This is the second property we encountered on this trip which listed internet and did not have it available. Also as an FYI, there is no evaporative cooling, there are no window panes which is not an issue, it cools off very nicely at night. There is also no telephone or computer available which was not particularly an issue for us. Would we stay there again, yes, if we could have 100% assurance there was internet available.
Thank you for pointing out the issue with our amenities description. I will change that immediately. We have a USB data card for customer use, but the reception is not what the local phone company advertised to us. Plus they can only be used in devises with a USB port. No tablets. We're also being told there will be wireless service soon. When that occurs we will update our site. There is also a phone in the office for all customer use. I'm sorry Marlyn didn't point that out. I will notify her to make a point all customers know.
Evaporate cooling is the natural breeze cooling off a body when hot. If it's misleading, I will pull that from the site also. Thank you for your feedback and look for the changes in the future.
Perfect 3-Day Vacation
One of the most incredible vacations have ever been on. The staff was extremely accommodating and even cooked me an authentic Costa Rican meal right in my kitchen. Sitting out on the porch listening to the sound of the river, tucans, and monkeys howling was an experience I will never forget. The house was presented beautifully and the open air layout was perfect. I would recommend this property to everyone especially for those interested in outdoor activities such as whitewater rafting and ziplining that are done right on the property. Also for those looking for some r&r as the 2 nights I was there were I had the best nights sleep since I was a little kid. Great place!
What we are trying to accomplish at Hacienda La Linda is expressed in this review. You can have the best of both worlds here. You can relax to the sounds and views of nature outdoors, or you can jump in a participate in activities exclusive to this farm. Either way, you are bound to be smilling the entire time.
Rustic charm, privacy, and wildlife
Our stay at Hacienda La Linda was like being transported back in time to a place where I have somehow already been. I felt instantly comfortable in this homey atmosphere and welcomed by our hosts that live nearby on the property. The warm breeze passes freely through the house's large screened windows. The bedrooms are large and comfortable with private bathrooms. But it is the porch that is the true treasure of the house. We sat for many hours outside on the rocking chairs watching and listening to our private jungle show. Birds, monkeys, and river rafters were all on display. It was truly a peaceful escape.
A couple things to be aware of however: the house feels more like two bedrooms rather than three. The third is downstairs and feels quite separate from the other two. Also, there are no tv's or internet here. Personally, I thought the lack of tv's added to the appeal but I definitely felt the lack for internet. That being said, I loved it here and hope very much to stay again.
Thank you for your imput and ideas. We have already looked into prepaid internet aircard for future visitors, and they will be available soon. The third bedroom is on the bottom floor and not much we can do about that except have everyone spend all their time out on the porch ! It serves as an opportunity for 2 more people to enjoy the beauty of Sarapiqui and all it has to offer.
