First of all, when we were less than 2 weeks out from our stay, I had heard nothing form Zackory Smith regarding our check in procedures. I did not get those until I emailed him and asked for them.
Upon my brother and his family arriving at 5:30pm to check in (check in was listed as 3:00), the front door was locked (check in stated that it would be unlocked and the key on the mantel). He went around to the side of the house and found an unlocked door. The house had not been cleaned since the previous renters had left 31 hours prior. There was food still in the fridge, dishes in the sink and the laundry room full of linens and towels - among all the other "filth" of having been lived in. My brother called Zac, I called Zac and left a message - no response. I finally found his email address and emailed him. He did respond to the email within about 15 minutes. He apologized and said there had been a miscommunication between him and his cleaning lady and she would be there in 10 minutes to clean the house. Meanwhile, my brother had just spent $500 at Costco and needed to put the groceries in the refrigerator. So he cleaned out the fridge, and put the food away. The cleaning lady finally did show up - but it was 45 minutes later, not 10. So he and his family left to get dinner and come back later. (There's $250 of unexpected expenses since they had planned on cooking dinner at the house that night and having it ready for when my family got there). My family arrived in Kona around 8:00pm and met my brother at the house at 8:30pm. By that time, the house was actually clean and ready for us.
The trash was supposed to be taken out by Zac on Fridays and Mondays. We were there Wednesday through Wednesday and still had the same full, smelly trash in the garage the day we left as we did when we got there.
There are rotten mangoes on the north side of the house from a beautiful mango tree. They smelled so bad you couldn't open any windows on that side of the house, nor swim in that side of the pool.
The house appears to be "settling" towards the west/ocean. And the decks slant in that direction. Is that safe??
The house itself was large and fit our needs well. The view was nice, but included telephone poles and wires.
There are loose tiles through out the house and the carpet has holes in it from wear.
All of these things individually could be over looked, but collectively led to a very disappointing experience.
Wonderful location, near town and other activities, but a few problems. First of all NO AIRCONDITIONING! Even though there were ceiling fans in most rooms, the house was quite hot most of the time, and sleeping was difficult during the hot July nights. Also had major "deferred maintenance". Carpet was threadbare in areas and some tiles were broken on a stairway, as was one of the king beds. Pool and back deck were beautiful, though.
Our group of 4 couples and one single really enjoyed having our own bedroom and bathroom. The kitchen is roomy enough for everyone to cook together. The artwork in the home is amazing. When I asked Zac about the artwork by Chee Cha, I learned it is his mother.
The swimming pool was one of the highlights of staying here. It is huge and a perfect temperature. We enjoyed it at all times of the day.
The neighborhood is very quiet and in a good location.
Thank you Zac!
Nice place with a great pool and beautiful view. The kids were so exited! Great house layout. Nice place to sit for the whole group and privacy for getting away. Great location to get to things in Kona and beaches.
The only slight issue was one bed was pretty broken down and not a lot of lighting. No air conditioning so was hot sometimes. But we would stay there again.
This is the perfect location just south of the busy village area only a couple minutes drive to all shops and restaurants.
2 great beaches to walk to for surf or snorkeling . And the house is incredible with plenty of room and the most enjoyable pool on the island. Big workable kitchen was put to maximum use daily.
We had 7 in the house and never felt crowded.
It is a perfect location for families. My 98 year old mother was able to navigate the and lanai area with no problems. The location and views are incredible. We had a wonderful time.
