About James Young
We bought this property as a wreck with wine-making barns attached and refurbished the house, converted the barns into 3 1-bedroomed gites, built a swimming pool and landscaped the gardens. Since then we have been letting the apartments and have enjoyed many happy times with new friends met through the rental business. We meet as many of the visitors as we can (not always there) and are happy to give advice about what the area has to offer. We are a retired couple from the north of England and Scotland, and the people in the photo are our children and grandchildren, all of whom share our passion for cycling
James Young purchased this Apartment in 2002
Why James Young chose Le Somail
The property is situated in a very attractive hamlet, but all necessary facilities are near enough to reach on foot, or by bike. The area is extremely rich in historical sites as well as beautiful nature, and provision for tourists, but is much less developed and less busy than other coastal areas of France.
What makes this Apartment unique
The hamlet is lively in summer with a variety of local festivals, markets and entertainments. The restaurants and cafes along the canal bank are particularly attractive and only a few minutes walk from the apartment.

Holiday in Le Somail
Just back from a very enjoyable holiday in Le Somail. We loved the airy apartment, which is comfortable and very clean, and the garden and pool which provided plenty of relaxation. The little village of Le Somail is charming, with three restaurants and a 'grocery shop' barge, and there are plenty of small villages to see in the area. Use the bikes to ride along the canal and visit the wineries in the area! Strongly recommended
Set in a peaceful village yet close to ameneties. The apartments were as described, clean and well maintined. The spacious patio and generous sized swimming pool were a great bonus.
The canal du Midi is a World Heritage site, a major acheivement of 17th century engineering and now an important tourist attraction. Le Somail lies in the wine making area of the Minervois on the edge of the coastal plain before it rises steeply into the attractive rugged areas of the Montagnes Noires. The area is rich in natural beauty from the bird sanctuary at Port la Nouvelle, a water park with a great variety of sea birds, to the limestone gorges and caves of the many rivers coming off the Cevennes. The area is also of great historical interest with various Roman sites as well as castles and abbeys steeped in Cathar history. Towns of particular interest locally are Narbonne, a Roman town with ancient monuments as well as an attractive shopping area, wonderful covered foodmarket with a bustling provincial atmosphere and a weekly street market, Carcassonne, famous for its mediaeval walled city, and also excellent shopping area, and many others, eg Pezenas, birthplace of Moliere.
Other Activities: water sports on Mediterranean, on sea lakes, and on rivers eg canoeing, 9 hole golf in Narbonne, 18 hole at Beziers Carcassonne and Lamalou les Bains
Golf: 9 hole course and driving range at Narbonne. Very attractive18 hole course at Carcassonne, 9 holes at Lamalou les Bains and 18 holes at Beziers
